Quick question, how do I identify if it's a salsbury diff or not?

If you look at it and think
"Yes, I could beat an Isuzu 4bd1 to death with that" then its a sals.
(also the cover plate that can be removed from the back to allow you to inspect the diffs internals is a giveaway)

the backing plate on the rear of the diff unbolts to remove the centre. A rover diff bolts in from the front as a complete unit.

this pic may help, note it has an after market diff cover and the round "can" attached to the left of the center is a diff lock actuator...

Needs a shave :D
The SHCS's look good.
I think I'll take another 5mm or so off mine just to show Pat a Sals can be as trim as a Rover diff and so will have to change the bottom bolts to SHCS's, so may as well go stainless all round, eh ;)

It has been. Nothing radical just to the bottom of the cover. I'm not sure I would go stainless???

OK I'll bite.
SHCS's second hand crappy springs (don't mean it but came to mind :D)
solid head cap screws (refering to the Unbrako's)
Sals diff shaving seems to be a popular subject, wouldn't the decrease in oil capacity be an issue ? or is the diff then 'overfilled' ?
What about crown wheel housing clearance, how much is enough ?
Perhaps the wrong place to ask but interested all the same.:)

Deano a shave doesn't reduce oil capacity, it just removes extra metal from the bottom of the housing, there is an over-abundance of metal that scrapes on rocks.
The HD covers usually increase the oil capacity anyway. My cover is the same as the one in Uninformed photos minus the bullet proof strap over the crown wheel ;)

Deano, there's so much meat on the bottom of the Sals that can be ground off before you even encroach on the oil compartment.
If you are going for a radical shave and it's a play only rig, yes, you can cut the entire bottom off and weld a new plate on and even machine down the OD of the crown wheel a bit to gain clearance.
I've only taken enough to cut into where the bottom bolt hole is/was, and I've relocated that hole further along.
What I've done = roughly 19mm of extra clearance, without compromising strength IMO if you use one of the HD covers.
I also use Loctite 515 or 518 as a sealant to 'glue' the cover on and gain some unitisation/strength from the HD cover.
Oh, and I run at least 3l of oil now too, the new cover generally increases oil volume.

I try not to run coolant in my Sals.....
AFAIK, SHCS = Socket Head Cap Screw

But how do you stop it getting hot ?
and sorry, yes, SHCS = socket head cap screw, AKA an allen bolt or unbrako, but the proper term is 'socket head cap screw' as Unbrako is a brand of SPS Fasteners, and they (and Holokrome) make probably the best SHCS's.

I run my wheel bearings in oil, this means the oil from the diff is circulating out through the stub shaft, past the axle shaft/ flange and into the bearings....the bearings acts as fans and cool the oil

Easy, one of the functions of oil is that of a cooling agent. Thats why pistons have underside squirters, to keep the bottom of the piston crown cool.

What is a maxi drive?
Kinda new to the whole 4x4 technical terms!

As for maxidrive, the holy grail of aftermarket Land Rover driveline components in Australia. Went out of business some time ago but the quality designed axles, flanges etc. are now made by other suppliers, sort of a Phoenix arising from the ashes, so to speak.
The 'maxidrive' term is often used generically to describle these components.
That's my basic understanding of it. :) I'll leave it to the 'sages' to cross the i's and dot the t's and correct me if need be.

Maxidrive was the name given to the first rover lockers made by Key Four Wheel Drive on the Gold Coast, late being known as Maxidrive Engineering. It was a small operation that had a big impact on the rover community WORLD wide. The owner/operator retired and closed up shop. His right hand man, Barry Ward owns and runs Hi-Tough Engineering making the same axles and drive flanges and doing some of the machine work for some other "maxidrive" products. M R Automotive bought the rights to the Maxidrive name and some of the product line.
the "can" or round cylinder attached to my axle tube just left of diff center, referred to by me in the pic, is the actuator (piston housing and piston with selector fork) the hemisphere has been machined modded, and other bits added (including axle shafts and drive flanges)

Aaah, that makes sense now.
Serg's Sals has a Maxi Drive diff lock with a piston to activate it, so it needs a squirter to keep its piston cool so it needs oil.
Mine doesn't have a Maxi Drive so it doesn't have a piston, so it needs glycol to keep it cool ! :D

Well the original thread was six years ago, and Brazilians are so passé these days so it's understandable you may have missed it
All the old pics were lost from the original thread, so this pic is a bit newer.
I cut/ground up to the bottom bolt hole, actually breaking through slightly.
I made a blind stud and screwed that into it with some Loctite liquid metal to fill the void, then drilled and tapped a hole further up and along, and re-drilled the cover and counter bored it for the bolt head and washer by grinding a big drill bit square to work as an end mill and using the drill press as a a bodgey mill.
I think I just filled the hole in the cover with some two part epoxy filler.
Original thread was here http://www.aulro.com/afvb/technical-chatter/30332-salisbury-brazilian.html

not at all, see the fins on the rockcrusher cover.
Air cooling fins, same as the ones on small stationary air cooled engines.

Other methods;
Can you pick it up on your own, if yes then it's not.
Does it look like you should have it in your rover (no matter if it's a Series/Defender/Disco or RRsport) then it is.
The Holy Grail, just like described in a movie. A simple basic HD unit that does the same job as a fancy schmancy unit but fit for a carpenter. (not Karen though)
Edit: Sorry, a RRS is a Disco. My bad.
