In the Sun Friday auto section there is a write up about the G wagens. Also mentioned was how the army misses the old defenders.

I had a chat to a veteran army driver the other day, he reckons they're too small inside.
I certainly know what I'd pick ;)

I'd swap an army LR for a comfortable vehicle with a radio any day!

Ditto, I had a chat with two of them sitting in a G Wagon and they said the same thing. Said it drove okay but was forty year old technology and they wanted their Defenders back.
Cant beat sixty year old, eh.
Robert.
PS: It damned well looked great tho.
I would certainly own one.
Perhaps they might release that scaled down Basic one they have been testing that will sell for less than a hundred grand ?

You can't expect to get a valid answer from Transport.
They G Wagon has no radio either, they were removed.

Read somewhere years ago that Pirentes are 4" wider than stock Landie to get 3 across the front with all their clobber on. No wonder they are feeling a little cramped.
Also remember talking to one of the engineers on the Pirente project and him wingeing about the difficulty meeting the requirement to get the turbo intake decibel level below the OH&S limit in the cab.
Cheers

That is the 6x6 version only. The 4x4 is the same dimensions as standard 110, there are chassis differences though.

I'll bet that back in the '80s there were a whole lot of grunts saying how much better the S3 was than this new fangled coil sprung thing.

I actually remember a RAEME mech saying something like that.... :D
Mainly as the new 110 was constant 4wd and so quick and smooth compared to the IIa's and III's and that the crappy Olympic Steeltreks weren't up to the rest of the car, the grunts were driving miles too fast into corners and then running out of road and rolling them.

Or as 4WDA would say "It's those bloody LandRovers, unreliable and dangerous. Don't buy one, get a toyota or nissan instead" :D :p

Chokkos are safe for now. We won't be getting the Gs for a long while yet.
Transferred to RACT and waiting to get onto the drivers' course for Mogs and 110s.... should be fun :D
Had the SGT praise the 110 over the SIII mainly due to constant 4WD and coils... but seems the ARes is moving away from SteelTreks and using XZLs. Seem to do the job.
The G-wagon were supposed to be controlled store due to the cryptographic radios fitted to them. Perhaps the army thought it was too impractical and decided that hard-mounted radios are too much of an admin headache to deal with. Would not surprise me a bit - the paperwork is bad enough as it is.

Yeah, my mate reckons they'll introduce the G wagons into the current combat units first and filter the best of the 110s into the reserves, and sell the rest of the 110s.

Seems that way. The army website lists G-wagon as the light vehicle with no mention of the 110s. Apparently combat units are already getting the new G's but a change over is going to take a long time due to new SOPs, training etc...

Yeh and when doing the parachute drop test on the then Landcruiser the motor landed 100 feet away and Toyota could not guarantee 10 years of parts if they won the contract.
On the Series 3 the Gearbox IMHO left a lot to be desired.I think the 2a box was a much stronger box but missing a few syncros which drivers were becoming used to and wanted.

I know we are all LR fans here, so obviously we are a but biased, but LR didn't tender for the replacement of the 110. Not everyone in the Army loves the LRs like we do! They have more than their fair share of problems...

I've noticed several Army (?) Merc's on the road just recently, including a six wheeler. So I suppose they have already entered service.

Yup, Gott'em, using'em.
Luv driving in them on the highways and off raod.
Yup, small inside, no load space and a bit cramped but opposite to fenders, more leg room but less fat arm room!
Cheers

I saw a couple G's on the M1 head south just before dream world on Thursday. Looks like some one has some to use. There were several Mogs following so they were doing more than a test run.

Very few grunts drove, there were only two vehicles to a rifle company . In a battalion of approx 600 men there were only about 20 land rovers. Their movements were so restricted there was no way they could drive into corners too fast and roll them. It would have been noncoms or pogoes not grunts dfriving like that.

I got told the same thing re coil springs and top speeds, except it was the officers who kept rolling them :D

Military propaganda... Peer pressure to accept them before they've seen them?
Or just a conspiracy theory ;)

I've ben seeing them all over town for ages now, wagons, traybacks and 6x6. One was parked at some shops (a wagon) and I sneaked a look underneath, everything looks pretty beefy but you'd have to think the 3 link rear end would have less travel and go through bushes.

They dont have very good articulation (factory) but have lockers as standard.
Mercedes has a long association with the ADF. The G was competing for the ADF contract in the 80's and lost to LR.
Its likely that there would be no consumer G-wagens without the military contracts around the world. Of the tiny production output (in Steyr-Daimler-Puch, Graz, Austria) half is for military.
But then again there are plenty of rich people (UAE, USA...) buying the "other" G's - luxo-barge versions, the G63 V8TT and even more ridiculous V12TT G65.G63 AMG: Super Sports Utility - CHRIS HARRIS ON CARS - YouTube
They also make a few utilitarian versions but they are still way over priced - and always will be, because Benz can. Shame.

I like the armoured version. Comes with nice set of 33's fitted to beadlocks with run flat.
