View Full Version : The D4 isn't level.

Hi All

The D4 went in for a bit of work this week. Looking at the list of parts that went in I am sure glad I wasn't paying the bill.

One thing that was changed was the rear air-spring and shocks. Now the D4 is a bit tail up. Has anyone had the rear air-spring and shocks changed? Has your D4 settled back to level?

I might add here if you tow a big van and have done a few klm's with the van attached get your rear suspension checked.

Haven't had the shocks changed, but every now and then I notice the suspension lets out a fart and settles down, almost as if the suspension is recalibrating itself and decides that the car is too jacked up.

Yup like me the car farts a lot. But its still tail high 3 hours after being turned off.

New shocks or air springs can't cause a change in height. I suspect a height sensor bracket has been knocked during the change-over.

Or the height wasn't recalibrated.

No need for recalibration unless a sensor was removed as the sensor isn't attached to the shock.

Was any work done on the front?

Yes the front had new brakes Hubs steering rack...

So is the front low or the rear high?

Edit: It doesn't really matter because the vehicle needs to go back to be corrected.

Not sure what the correct LR colour is, but by any chance is your D4 a reddish colour with a set of GOE (organised) wheels and Conti tyres?

Mate, please explain....brakes, hubs, steering rack.....? :(

That is a serious list of stuff for a vehicle still under warranty. A bit worrying.

The front end parts... and why.

My D4 had a minor vibration in the steering wheel under braking... I can see you all thinking warped rotors. Except the vibration didn't happen all the time. There is a certain VIN range that are know to have this issue.

The fix starts with a new steering wheel and goes on from there.

So if you have a minor vibration in your steering under brakes get it checked out.

The colour is Rimini Red.

I was on the original group buy for these wheels.

I hate that bulletin.

Why is that?

It sounds like a lot of work.

Because every damn time a car comes in for brake shudder you have to do the following.

Steering wheel, steering rack, hydro bushes, new pads and discs, a wheel alignment and maybe ball joints as well.

It's all easy work it's just so time consuming and I hate working on suspension.

Is it only the bigger brakes on the 3.0 that shudder?

I don't think it's actually the brakes that shudder. I understand it's actually a wobble somewhere in the steering/suspension that's only felt when braking lightly at highway speeds, as a shimmy in the steering wheel.

It feels like the front wheels have gone out of balance, but the shimmy disappears when you take your foot off the brake and no "out of balance" symptoms when cruising at any speed, only starting when the brakes are applied. To me, that suggested warped rotors but in my case the shimmy only happened at highway speed and I never felt it while braking at town speeds.

I recently had the same work done, replacing the steering rack, etc, etc and the problem has gone away. Glad it was done under warranty as the cost of the work was said to be around $3.5k. I was pretty surprised to be charged for the alignment, though. When I queried it the dealer insisted that LR refuse to include the cost of the alignment in the warranty work. I would have thought it was an unavoidable and necessary part of doing that job.

There's another thread about this issue if you have a dig for it.

I can understand a wheel alignment not being a warranty item as such however when it is required as a result of other work that is different - i suspect it is you local dealers interpretation of alignment service item not a warranty item. What if a water pump failed under warranty - would they charge you for the coolant?

You are absolutely correct, if they had to do a wheel alignment as part of the job LR will pay for it, just as they would pay for one if you were changing lower arm bushes under warranty.

If they charged you for the wheel alignment and made you pay for it without authorising it with you before they did the work, I'd have been straight to the service manager demanding it was for free.

If they called you up and said your car needed a wheel alignment irrespective of the job they were doing, that's a separate issue.

Thanks. Mine started doing it just prior to fitting the 2.7 brakes and hasn't done it since so wondered if the dealers see mostly 3.0s with the problem or whether its regardless of brake disc diameter. Its a bit late now for me to refit the original brakes to see if there's a significant problem. I wonder if the larger discs are less tolerant of minor irregularities in the steering system.

Thanks mate,

Looks great.

They had me for a sec, as they have the Landrover Hub Cover on them.

Cheers,

Kev.

I have had the ebay caps pop off my GEO rims, as well as originals. I now put two tiny blobs of silicone on prior to pushing the cap on, then leave overnight.
Havent had any come off as yet.

I haven't lost any of the eBay ones. They seem to be a tighter fit.

Similarly, I use a drop or two of Loctite medium-strength to hold mine in.

Cheers,

Gordon

I had the D4 checked today. Apparently it is sitting correctly...

Must be going crazy...

Because of the front end panel changes it looks like my D4 is sitting higher at the front than my D3. But a check of the hub to wheel arch is about right.
