Highlift on spare wheel

Im shifting my HL jack off the roof rack as it likes grabbing passing bushes, looking at making a bracket on the spare using the centre of a old RR rim, some say it will damage the rear door, is this a practical theory? Or has any one actually encountered this? Mine will only be there for the odd day trip, any thoughts ....Gary

I can appreciate the problem with the bushes over head, also having that extra weight high up on the vehicle, moving the hi-lift to the back door I'm not sure is a good idea, it will put a lot of extra load on the back door fixing plate. The time the back door will see the additional load on top of the inerrant extra load will be when you are actually off roading and possibly corrugations or something similar. I attached the hi-lift jack to the spare on the back of my Pootrol in days gone by and the door skin started to crack, I've not done this on my D1 for this reason.
The time I put the hi-lift on the back of my D3 on the wheel carrier the hi-lift is mounted on the inside of the spare, not the outside.
My ten cents worth, I think that things will start to go wrong if you put the high-lift on the back door as well as the spare. Maybe swap them around and have the spare on the roof and the hi-lift on the back door specifically when you are off roading, maybe, the tyre may not get caught up as much. Dunno, never done it, personally don't like roof racks anyway....

depending on how long your highlift is, mount a pair of captive nuts inside the rear bumper at about 45 degrees then use a pair of spacers and long bolts to secure the jack horizonally across the back

I keep mine behind the back seat, but it is a 48" jack. I also have a LPG tank in the cargo area with a built in storage box, so there is a convenient space that the jack cannot move from. Wrapped up in a pair of old long trousers, or you can get a proper bag from ARB.

If you do not have a space there, it MUST be restrained in some other way!
