Hay all,
Well its time to shell out for a new set ( well another set) of mud tyres for my Rangie.
I'm after 33inch. Its used 60 road 40 mud.
the question is whats everyone else running? and whats everyone else opinions???
THeres a couple of choices, Micky(cant really afford these), Kumho, Silverstone Sports (I'm thinking about these the most)
Theres some super swamps up for sale, which I'm just a little bit concerned about wear, and noise.
thoughts?

BFG MT Km2s - quiet, hardwaring and good in the mud

You can't pass up on the Silverstone Sports assuming they still 20-30% cheaper then the BFGs.

better to pay the extra for the BFG MTs and not have punctures

Really, I was not aware that BFG tyres were any more puncture resistant?
I don't have much experience with tyres so please do explain this in more detail!

Micky's MTZ.
Picked up a set of 285/75/16 for $355ech.
Just did 9000k's, NSW Central Coast to Cape York, across to Karumba and home via Central Queensland.
No punctures, chipping or side wall damage.
Started new with 14mm of tread, came home with 13mm on the front 12mm on the rear.

Hey ,
I have MAXXIS Bighorn in 255x85x16's , they are ready for replacement ..So I have been doing the ring around and the best price on the MAXXIS is $365 fitted and Bal ....
BFG M/T KM2 $385 fitted and bal
for the extra $money I will be going BFG

So you have an options;
MickyT MTZ @ $355
Maxiis Bighorns @ $365
BFG MTs @ $385
or
wait for it
Silverstone Sports at $285... and possibly with the best mud performance of the lot...

I am surprised by that price for the Maxxis. I just picked some 235/85/16s for $250. Different tyre size and state but thats a big difference.

Drover are you running these on 7" or 8" rims?

I'm with you, I paid $260 fitted and balanced for mine, same size as yours.

I've just bought some Summit Mud Hogs as a second play set for the Disco. $220 each for 245/75R16 from a place along Canterbury Rd in Bayswater.
They're very very similar to the old Goodyear MTR.
Haven't really used them in anger yet, but for the price can't complain so far :D

you want 33", options are 33x10.5R15 or 255/85R16 or 285/75R16.
only the 255/85R16 will fit the standard 16 x 7 rim. Thus need to factor in new rims for the other 2 options. You will lose steering lock with the standard 7" rim unless you add spacers or go to a zero off-set. Thus all options will cost you more than the cost of the tyre.
I have BFG KM2's in 255/85R16. Great tyre. I run them at 14 psi on disco series 1 rims and yet to pop a bead. They don't bag as much as the 33x10.5R15 but handle the road better.
All 255/85's are a low volume import and thus will cost more on a per unit basis. The prices quoted are consistent with what I found out when I bought mine.
Others I drive with have the maxxis and speak highly of them. MTZ's have a good rep too but don't know anyone with them.
don't go the swampers unless you have them as play wheels only.
my opinion for what it's worth.

X2 for the mudhogs .Dont be fooled , this are made by Kanati who make tyres for agricultural and army vehicles for over 50 years .They just happen to be new in Australia .After Km2's , Mtz's and Coopers ,i finally happy to drive on a fantastic tyre and not be paying for a million dollar advertising campaign . Dont get me wrong all the above are great tyres but no better then the mudhogs and they are far dearer for the above reason .

KM2's are rubbish, I hated mine, after coming from MTZ's
Next tyres, if radial muds will likely be pro comp
the 6 KM's I have now, will likely be the victim of Duramax and a silly driver, then onto the next set, not KM2's

As Grimace said, the MT117 sports are great value for a play tyre, wouldn't suggest them for touring work. Seen them for @ $250 a tyre recently on evilbay
The Federal Couragias are becoming quite popular (bugger, now the prices have gone up too ), I've had a set (285/75R16) when I was still in Brisbane. Really liked them, good in mud and a cheap all-rounder although they do wear a bit quick. I'd definatley would buy another set more than happy with them. :)

I'm also running the Federal Couragias, very happy with the off road performance. Especially their side grip in climbing out of ruts. Wear is a bit more rapid than liked (3mm in 3000k's) but done a lot of high speed distance travel. Paid $229- ea, in 265/75/16. Compared to Maxxis at $294- or BFG's were more again.
