Brake, reverse light fuse

2001 TD5 D2 auto.

My brake & reverse light fuse keeps blowing as soon as the ignition is turned on making it difficult to fault find the problem.

I recently removed the transfer box to reseal it and replace the centre diff washers once it was reinstalled and every thing reconnected the diff lock light was on constantly, I check the diff lock and it is unlocking mechanically ok, the light was on even with the wires disconnected from the diff lock switch so it looks like there is an earth fault in that circuit but I cant see anything obvious.

This has now progressed to the brake light fuse blowing, is there an easy was to separate the brake light circuit from the reverse lights to make it easier to diagnose?

I have disconnected the brake light switch and the fuse still blows so I

suspect there’s a short on the supply side not with the reverse or brake light wiring.

I’m open to any suggestions as to where to look for the problem.

Complete stab in the dark but maybe related to the relays, see if you can switch these around. Otherwise hang in there. Some other guys here are up to speed with the electrical wiring. Have you looked at the electrical wiring diagrams in RAVE.

My Td5(2000) had a similar fault....Turned out that the live wire to reverse lights had rubbed through section down beside the gearbox the m.. who fixed the gearbox never cliped the harness into original position and it rubbed through,,,,as many things seem to use a common earth the brake light fuse blew but only when the wiring earthed out as the brake was applied...also when this fuse blew you could not set cruise control even though the pilot light on dash switch indicated that there was power to cruise control unit....maybe a wire has pinched up down arround the box somewhere.....Best of luck inding it,,I went to several auto elecs before one actually found problem and he ncharged 300,00 so I really mean best of luck.......Peter also at the last was blowing fuses as fast as they could be replaced

I disconnected the 3 plugs behind the window switches that go to the auto trans & transfer box and the fuse did not blow, reconnected them one at a time & the 3rd one blew the fuse so it must be in the harness to the reverse light switch so I off to buy a new harness.

Hi Roger, could you please tell me which window switches you are talking about here - I assume they are the switches in the centre console ? I have this same problem at the moment I would like to investigate further before spending too much money at an Auto Elec.

Yes I removed the window switch panel in the console and then disconnected the 3 plugs that go to the trans area.


there was a damaged wire in the harness that went to the reverse light switch so it was shorting to earth blowing the fuse.

This happened to me for no apparent reason. Rear left break light not working. I replaced the globe, applied the brake and fuse F25 blows. Diff lock light comes on when brakes applied, no brake or reversing lights. Replace the fuse, fiddle the globes and install different globe. Touch the brake and the fuse blows again. Solution was to remove the lhs globe. All good other than lhs brake light not working. Another thread mentioned there could be some connection with the trailer socket so I pulled it to bits, cleaned connections and reinstalled. Repaced the lhs brake light globe and problem solved. All lights working as they should do.
This may be just good luck but maybe worth a look.

Edit (thought this was in the Defender Section Sorry) Had very similar issue on my defender so may not be relevant. Determined harness rubbed through thin covering sitting on base of chassis. Ended up cutting & re-wiring harness that runs through the chassis to the outside. Issue fixed.

I spilled coffee on centre console and forgot it had happened. I’m now inspecting it.
