onboard water tank

Hello Together,

Looking to install a on board water tank on my D3 TDV6 S thought a good space may be behind the spare in the additional cavity or between rear seats and cargo barrier.

Does anyone have any suggestion?

I don't have anything like that clearance in front of my cargo barrier. What brand is the cargo barrier, and the tank ?

great that’s what I need, haven't gotten a tank yet, where did you purchase yours? CB is OL I think I may not have enough room but probably can move barrier a bit.

What are the dimension of the tank you have?

I angled it back a bit to fit the tank in.
The tank is a "Boab" from Dolium Dolium Pty Ltd (http://www.dolium.com.au/view/pg?command=cman_view_webpage&webpage_id=1&pkey=dolium)

hanging behind my rear seats (defender) off the cargo barrier just ignore the HiLux bit and you will be ok....

Boab seems to be cheaper then bladder, just would hate for something in the back to puncture the bladder and to drown in my car without a water crossing

G'day Peter, I really like the setup and it is very similar to what I'm trying to arrange once I build the drawers, quick question though on the full cargo barrier will the bottom where it connects to the tie down points would that impede on a drawer setup as I would prefer a full cargo barrier and leave it in and only take out the drawers when not in use as opposed to having a 3/4 cargo barrier that connects to the drawers and have to take the whole lot out or leave it in permanently.

Hi Julian,
here's a couple of pics of my cargo barrier - as you can see the bottom bracket only comes into the rear space by about 1" - My drawer system (all designed but yet to be built) will have a small "notch" in the rear corners of the "base" board to allow for this ... it won't affect the operation of my drawers or fridge slide. My drawer system will be easily removable and the barrier will still be in place, and the barrier itself is very easily removed if I want to do so...about 5 minutes tops.
Oh and the cargo "liner" is an el-cheapo from Clark rubber - trimmed to fit.

cheers[/QUOT I have the same barrier, but have not right angled the lower mount to create the space you have. i doubt I can do it now, as I have a drawer setup , pretty much against the barrier.

If you are looking at making up a drawer setup, a few pointers and questions you need to answer before commencing.

If you wish to have anything larger than a 50/60 litre fridge, the fridge has to be mounted as low as possible on one side. It is possible the ARB 78 litre will fit above a drawer, as it is quite a squat shape. The midsize Engels are much the same. Anything larger is too high. This rules out a double base drawer setup if you want to use a large fridge. Using a single drawer x 3 high on one side, a 80/90 litre fridge can be used. Just check the sizes carefully. It is a tight fit, and opening the larger fridges can be an issue, even when fully out on a slide. Again the ARB 78 may be an option, as the lid opens end ways.

An angled base is pretty much a requirement. If you check the rear cargo floor and the tailgate, the tailgate slopes up slightly. if you have a fridge slide or a drawer on the cargo area floor without an angled base, it will hit the tailgate when slid out. The base can be cut out around the cargo barrier mounts, and the existing tie down points utilised with turnbuckles to lock a drawer set up in.

If you want a plan for a double draw setup to suit the D3/D4, there was a good one on the forum about 6 months ago. Sorry I can't recall the detail, but a search should pick it up. I believe Dolium have a metal drawer setup for a D3/D4, but you would need to check.

Thanks Admiral - I was already aware of the sloping tailgate issue, when I have the fridge mounted in the back just by itself (for use at picnics/shopping etc) It has its own "base" to raise it up the requisite amount to clear the tailgate. See pics below....
The plans for my drawer system are for the fridge on one side and drawers next to it..... I'm a great believer in the old adage "measure twice - cut once" so I've spent a good deal of time crawling around in the back of my D3 measuring and "mocking up" various ideas - it's amazing what you can do with some scrap timber and a few clamps....saves time in the long run :)

What size fridge do you have there?

Any progress on your drawers? I have a very similar concept in my mind and hope to fit a 60/80l engel in there with the Boab tank.

Having just installed my Autosafe, I think the Z bracket is suppose to face forwards. I noticed that the hole for the bolt is off centre, which allows the locating tab on the tie down to sit on the outside of the bracket, whereas in other orientation (except if you swap sides) it doesn't sit down fully.

But it may be a different design, as my connecting piece looks longer than that; the end result is it sits flush against the second row seats, and the load space cover still fits normally.
