Hi all this is my first post.
I picked up my Discovery 4 SE last week after trading in a Prado. I need to install side steps to keep the peace. Dealer quoted $1960 to install original steps. Anybody had experience in installing after market side steps.
Any help would be appreciated

Hi John,

Damn right, the OE stuff is expensive. Good quality though. Not that difficult to fit if you are handy, and it will save you some coin. I think you would probably be able to pick up the OE equivalent from a LR specialist far cheaper.

Hi John,

I notice that we are neighbours so to speak. Congrats on the purchase.

The OEM steps are just that, steps, and not too robust for any off road duties. A better alternative is 'rock sliders' of which there is plenty of info on here. I have a set from the UK made by GNVP (google it) that are the combination slider / step combo. Approximately $1000 delivered to Aus. There are local equivalents now from Gordon (vendor on this site, GOE) and another in Brisbane (other members might chime in here with details).

PM me if you would like to meet up for a look and discussion regarding general D4 mods.

Regards Trif.

Hi John,

As mentioned above there are a number of options. I have just fitted sliders made up by Brad (Disco3Qld) on my D4. These are a slightly wider version which double as a step of sorts. There are a few others on here who have them. I am really happy with mine. The GNVP ones look a bit wider I think.

I think you would also find there are steps that at least look similar to the OEM side steps on ebay for significantly less than dealer prices.

Fitting yourself is not too hard and will save some dollars as well.

Cheers,

Pat

X2 for the rock sliders. I got narrow ones and sort of wish i got wider ones to use as a step as i now find the back of my pants often gets a strip of mud as I slide out:D

Don't get LR sidesteps - had them for 18mnths - caused more damage than good to my door trims & managed to rip off the sidestep trim today on a rock river crossing. If you hit rocks the steps kick up and opening & closing the doors tears of the lower trim. I've now removed my front trims until I get sliders.

Get extended sliders. stronger & dont collect all the mud kicked from the front wheels.

That's next on my Xmas list

Johnwt.

I also got a set made up by Brad, the narrow one and fitted them myself.

Much stronger than the factory steps and look fantastic on.

Very simple to fit, I am sure there are a number of posts about them if you do a search and if Brad is still doing them from memory my set, delivered to my door were less than half the price you have been quoted.

I have the GNV Rock Sliders with non-slip tape applied, they make good steps this way.
I did have the OEM steps on the D3 originally, unfortunately they could not handle the rigours of a track up in the Blue Mountains and folded up against the doors - which meant ingress and egress from the vehicle by the windows. Needless to say this was not regarded as ideal by the better half.
Cheers

I will need steps for my new/demo D4. Quoted about $1600 to buy by LR dealer parts department. Saw an after market set on Ebay locally for $370 to $400 plus freight or a UK store $250 plus freight that "look" the same and "look" robust enough. Does anyone know of any issues with after market steps versus LR steps? The sort of thing I've seen is shown in the Parts Installation Videos thread I posted a few days ago

I have taken note of the issues raised earlier in this thread but these steps are for my wife who needs them to get into the car rather than use as rock sliders etc. We won't be doing any rough 4wd stuff as she can't take being shaken around too much.

I guess if the price means I can replace them 4 times if I have to and still be in front.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Martin,

I too had the side steps fitted to keep the wife happy. However the plastic "grip" on the top of them is very prone to damage.

I believe that the plastic isn't designed for Australian temperatures, and when it was warm last summer the wife managed to compress one of the ridges with the heels of her shoes.

This now bothers me every time I wash the car, but the dealer wants $500 for one new sidestep, and even then the same thing is likely to happen this summer (unless I keep the wife out of the car:D )

Hope this helps,

Michael

Hi Michael.

Thanks for that. I just had a look at the UK site and one side is 95 pounds both sides together 149 pounds. They're out of stock of the near side and complete kit at the moment though. Might be worth having a look at an aftermarket replacement. The LR dealers certainly knows how to charge. That's why I was looking at an aftermarket solution. Looks like the genuine LR product may not be tough enough in any case.

Someone mentioned a Brisbane dealer earlier that do the sliders. Anyone have details? That's close to home, so could be a convenient alternative to factory steps.

The APTsteps / rocksliders are on my wishlist too. Functional and look good too. Better than the OEM steps IMHO. They work really well as steps AND provide protection from shopping trolleys. I believe they're about $900 For a set

I emailed Ben from APT Off-road recently. They are now doing rock sliders with checker plate tread. For $1080.
