I've been looking for an Airbag/winch compatible bullbar for the Disco for a while now & have only found 1 available in QLD. It's near 2 grand with an 8 week construction wait:o I find this, pardon the pun, a bit rich. Any advice would be appreciated, even a good used would be better than nothing:D. Also, what's the difference between standard & an SRS bar? I'm assuming it's to do with the mounting brackets.

ARB still have an Airbag/winch bar listed Deluxe winch bar | Products | ARB 4x4 Accessories (http://www.arb.com.au/products/arb-protection-equipment/bull-bars/deluxe-bull-bars/3432050/)

Ouch! So they make them to order now I guess and thats why they bumped the price up.
TR Spares has a few secondhand ones for the D1, still a bit pricy though.

Yep d1 stuff is getting hard to get and exxy with long waiting time 2nd hand is probably best but may have to wait for one to come up:(. There are winch bars in the UK still cheaper than here with door to door delivery in about a week:) Look at the usual suspects in the UK:)

I know when I'm looking for second hand D2's all I ever find are D1 bars...
ARB quoted me $1600ish fitted for a stainless steel one for my D2

I wish I could get a hold of a Gitsham one though (had one on my D1, was lovely)

On inquiring through my crash shop a few weeks ago ARB needed 10 orders to make the next batch I was going to be number 5 on the list with no set timeline on when they'd be made given they would wait for 10 orders.
I didn't bother in the end.

I'd suggest SRS mounts even if you have a non SRS disco as they've got more give in a crash before damage goes through to chassis. Having said that an SRS bar fetches ALOT more on the 2nd hand market so you'll end up paying more.

I reckon would look pretty Smick I would have one myself if it wasn't for the fact I had an ARB

A forum member asked for some dimensions of the bar I purchased recently so I thought I'd put them up for general info. Note that they're rounded to the nearest 5mm. I'm still waiting for the lights:(
Distance from flat top of bar (bumper) to lowest point on centreline = 315mm

Distance from flat top of bar (bumper) to lowest point closest to front wheel = 195mm

Distance from flat top of bar (bumper) to centreline of fairlead = 200mm

Thanks for those measurements Saitch.
Looking fwd to seeing it on the car.
One thing obvious from those measurements is that the winch is about 100mm lower than with my current non airbag ARB bar. I wonder how much this impacts approach angle? I assume that this bar is modelled off the ARB winch compatible bar.

Finally all done. Auto sparky just finished. Sorry about the delay but " Five Horses" & myself had to go fishing for a few days :D Note that the LEDs are fog lights & therefore on low beam only with an on/off. The switch supplied is, typical, for a vehicle of Japanese ilk so pretty crappy. A trip to your local Landie place might find you a nicer dash switch. Also, I drilled mounting holes through the top of the bumper bar for the lights as the internal mounts were somewhat light!

OK i have just fitted an ARB pajero bullbar (airbag approved) onto my 1995 D1.
Chassis rails measured up the same between both vehicles, had to make brackets up to get bar fitting perfectly for grille, indicators etc, but the bar could fit without brackets if you didnt care about aesthetics.

Price for bullbar was $0 so half a day grinding and welding was worth it.

Looking good! Any chance of some more detail about bracket work? And which model Pajero ?

oztrax
19th June 2013, 01:15 AM
Bar `sticker `says "pajero 1991 on p/n 32/3434020"
This bar is airbag approved.
I used pajero bar coz my neighbour had it in his yard and gave it to me.

The pitch of the bullbar is very close, there are shims spot welded to sides of chassis bar i removed these as initially i was going to install bar over chassis ends without the use of brackets. This is not required with new brackets and now i've had to make new shims .

1. Hang bar from ropes and muck around with alignment, i chose to mount bar close to grille, in fact the rear edge of the bar tucks into grille bottom channel, this is time consuming to get it all spot on.

2. Make up 4 brackets 5mm steel each side of chassis ends, and back drill off thru chassis mount one at a time with 10 mm drill.

3. Install brackets with original bolts and tighten up.

4. Swing bar into place, align perfectly considering gaps from fenders etc.
ends up perfect at 50 mm from corner edge of fender to bar pipe corner.

5. Spot weld brackets in numerous places, remove bar and complete welds, may be easier and neater welds to turn bar upside down etc

6. Added third hole to chassis` member (D2 bar has 3 holes D1 has 2}

7. I will Fit longer 12mm bolts with clearance drill (allows easier install tolerances),these`will be longer to accommodate brackets , dont use high tensile bolts, in an accident you want bolts to shear.

8. Bar ` may need slight trimming on sides to clear indicator and front edge trim, i have to grind a corner off under bar to fit tow eye as`well.

4 to 5 hours with A good helper around

Hey,

Love the build! The bar looks almost exactly the same as mine. Obviously the actual Disco bar sits out a fair way further though.

In regards to bring airbag compliant, I doubt it will be now, at least to the thinking I'd an insurance company. My reasoning being that it's now on a different vehicle than what it was designed for and it's also had some modifications.

Don't get me wrong, I still absolutely love the build. The use of a Pajero bar is pretty cool and for the cost of a couple bits of steel and some bolts. It's great, just thought I would point out the metaphorical elephant in the metaphorical room.

Oztrax, the bar may have been airbag compatiple on the poojero but not anymore since you made new mounts, the correct D1 airbag mounts have concertina brackets.
Funnily enough i picked up a similar pajero arb bar at a swapmeet for $50 not knowing what it was for, so i put it on ebay and sold it for $300 .

oztrax
19th June 2013, 04:38 PM
Yes those concertina brackets`are actually on the old bumper bar, i guess it
would be easy enough to transpose these onto chassis ends and then bolt arb bar to these, this would also mean smaller or no brackets, mind you aesthetics for grille etc would be more difficult to attain.

Although i read somewhere bullbar/airbag combos`actually require stiffness
in bar. ie stiff bar can cause bags to deploy earlier not later.

Mate of mine fitted a 2nd hand bar to his hilux (no bags) , the bar was `a hilux bar but not exact p/n match for his vin/model.
During roadworthy they gave him a hard time and were not going to pass car rego check QLD.
based on bullbar part number only.

I reckon my D1 is worth $4K, $2K for a bar i just cant justify that
(scottish genes i suppose)....

Completely agree, no point spending money where its not warranted. I was just pointing it out. More so for anyone jumping on here that may not have considered it, that were thinking of doing a similar build.

Just be aware that if you have a prang your insurance may be void if you have a non compatible bar fitted.

If anyone wants it, I have made a 3D model of a D1 bullbar based on old drawings (I work for TJM) that can be converted into profiles to cut and fold.

For a small fee I could be persuaded to change them all to 2d drawings...

I can also provide a program to give a CNC tube bender to form the barwork

It is a winch compatible bar with "airbag approval" the only problem you will run into is that I've used press tooling that I have access to here to mount the parker/indicators in the bar, but you could just leave them out altogether if you aren't fussed.

PM me if you're keen

Steelo have you thought about seeing if anyone form ther eastern seaboard meet can bring it up for you..

My bar I purcashed off another member in Brisbane and I shipped it down from QLD it cost me 60bux from Ego depot to depot. might of gone up a bit now but you dont know if you havent check freight prices dont assume because its a bar its expensive.

pop58 has offered to take it back from the seaboard meet to QLD if you ask in the courier section heaps of syndey people are going and may take it that half of the route.

it just reallly depends if you want that bar though
