Hi all,

Very happy with my new purchase!

And as soon as I work out a way to enter navigation destinations whilst moving, I will be even happier :) - anyone?

I have already ordered:

GOE 18' rims from gghaggis
Traxide dual battery from drivesafe
Rocksliders from disco3qld

Most likely going to go with Continental cross contact A/T 255/60/18 or the GG AT2 255/60/18.

I have also tried to contact Stornoway SA about the cut-down version of the expedition roofrack he had on his D3. (see his album) That looks just what I am looking for - a low profile full length platform roof rack. I am not keen on the windcheetah - it just looks like it sits too high. I have factory fitted extended roof rails so would like something that basically just rests on top of these or has short feet.

I will also try to fit the redarc trailer brake controller using syniegy's notes - (I hope this should be straight forward enough?).
Then the Mitch Hitch.

Eventually the bullbar and winch, most likely from OL and the rear wheel carrier.

During my research i put together some options and prices that might prove useful to others. see attached spreadsheet

cheers

Simon

One other suggestion - look at 265/60R18 tyres, as they're still a legal option and it is a more common size.

Also I can't see LLAMS or GOE rods on the list, a must!

thanks guys.

i couldn't find any tires in the 265/60/18 size that have as an aggressive tread pattern as the conti's or gg's. I think these tyres come closest to my original preference of BFG AT, but i am concerned about the size of these for insurance implications.(which i haven't checked yet)

Llams / rods - rods definitely on the list - thanks for the reminder. I am just concerned about LLAMS and warranty issues - I know there are a number of threads on here, but i haven't had a chance to go through them yet.

Stornaway - didn't get your message sorry. can you try to resend it? or add the details here?

DoctorJ - i have been watching your thread with interest - I have already been in contact with 4x4de about their wheel carrier. What i might do though with camping light is not fix it permanently. I will have an andersen plug at the tow hitch for the trailer (which i don't have yet:D), and i might just connect a light with a spring clamp to that when i need it. It might just save having the extra wiring in place, and would mean it's easier to take the wheel carrier off.

G'day Simon both units (Llams or Rods) are quickly removed if need be so I wouldn't be to worried about the Insurance implications, my decision was made on whether I was likely to change over the rods every time I wanted to go 4wding and the truth be known I much preferred the once installed forever done system that Llams offers, both units effectively offer the same lift so no difference there, there's a fairly large difference in price but i was happy to wear that and after taking her out on Sunday I'm happy with the choice.

Just to clarify - you don't need to change "over" the rods - that implies you have to swap from one set to another. You just swap over one connection. Easy to do and takes less than 10secs per wheel.

Why the older GGAT2 instead of the newer and better GGAT??

As for not being able to enter destinations in the satnav while moving, you can if you use the "go to" function which ironically, I find more of a safety issue than typing in the address...go figure. If there is a way around this, I'd be happy to hear it.

No reason. Have just read that thread about them, so will also consider these, thanks

I am considering a rear ladder....

apart from the LR version
there is the one from Dolium - requires drilling

or this one on ebay apparently doesn't
Land Rover LR3 and LR4 Rear Access Ladder Brand New Discovery 3 and 4 | eBay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Land-Rover-LR3-and-LR4-Rear-Access-Ladder-Brand-New-Discovery-3-and-4-/290783570602?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item43b40d2aaa&vxp=mtr)

anyone installed a ladder? I am not sure i can bring myself to drill holes

I see earlier on you mention fitting a Rear wheel carrier, why not just use that for access to your rack?
You step on the rear bumper, centre wheel support shaft, top of tyre and then up on top. Worked great for me.
Otherwise for easy access to the rear of rack just have the top tailgate closed and stand on the lower one.

Thanks Rich. I might hold off on the rear wheel carrier, for a while, as there is less urgency as I can't put the Bfg at on the car (not legal), so if I go with a 255/60/18 it will fit underneath with out deflation.

Still looking to get a rack I can walk on, so a ladder will be handy.

plus the other reason is aesthetics :D

Rock sliders are on!!!! Took about 2hrs last night being careful. All I can say is, damn those yellow plastic nipples!

Look great, very happy with them.

Anyone had a view on my ladder question below?

Hi Simoncs,

I installed a LR ladder earlier this year. I had to drill out two existing holes and needed a nut insert tool similar to a rivet gun. All up took about two hours to install.

For tyres - you can get a true LT Dueler D697 now that fits (legally)...

265-60-18 LT...

two existing holes - or new holes? if you drill holes - what stops the rust? do you have to use a primer afterwards?

From memory I pushed out two plastic clips and then over sized the holes. I then used a pre-purchased LR scratch repair kit to paint over the bare metal. The two holes then took the nut inserts.

This is all as per the instructions, which are available on the owners web page.

New rims and tyres - thanks Gordon!!!!

New expedition roof rack - thanks Brad!!!

LR rear ladder - thanks duckworths

Trailer brake controller and 2nd battery still to be installed, just as soon as I get some time.

Is that Indus Silver? Still trying to decide on colour, which has to be done in the next week or so.

simoncs
5th December 2012, 05:52 AM
Yes Indus silver.

I wasn't sure that i wanted this colour initially, but it was the only car in the country available with rear diff, so choice was made for me.
So glad it was as i love the colour now. Looks great in the flesh, will hide scratches better than most colours.
LR use this colour for advertising all their D4's as well!

hope that helps

Hi Simon,

Your vehicle is looking great.

Thanks for posting updates and piccys, I only seem to keep adding to my list of additions to my D4 at the moment, and the posts from yourself and others who are going through the 'build up' process are really helpful.

So, thanks to all those who keep the forum informed of their progress and with all the tips that go along with it!

I suspect my own build up will take place slowly over the coming months/years.

Hey Julan,
I use a place in Mornington to do my powdercoating. They just did one of my foremans wheels. Look awesome.
PM me and I'll pass on their details.

Could you provide some information (make, price, mods, etc) on the roof rack, please. I have the same colour D3 and have been looking around for a suitable rack that is low profile and functional. Would prefer an expedition-type rack but must say I do like the look of yours.

Cheers

Hi Peter,

Essentially it is an expedition rack. It is the full roof length. 210Cm.
the problem with the LR expedition rack is there are only a couple of cross bars. I wanted to be able to load easily, and stand on the rack whilst doing so, so mine has a Mesh floor on it.
Brad made it for me. Disco3qld. Pm him for a price. It will be in line with other full-length racks.
It is quite light, but very strong.

Will add some more photos later.

Here's some more pics of it prior to powder coating, and the final result.

You can see from the pre-powder coated pic there are a couple of extra plates added on both sides that attachments/accessories can be bolted to.

Rack dimensions are 1250mm wide x 2020mm long.
These are what I requested.
I have the full length rail kit and this rack sits on that on a couple of spacers provided. You add more or less spacers depending on your requirements. it may be possible to just have the short rail kit and then have some feet made for the lower roof.

Currently I have access problems into our underground carpark, so I have about 1.5cm clearance at the moment with the rack on and car in access height mode.

no other rack would have worked for me, unless i took it on and off all the time.

Gday Simoncs,

How have you found your low profile rack over the last year?

Likewise your Continentals?

Just starting the same mod process on a MY13 D4 and just curious to know how you've found your upgrades, after some "field testing".

cheers

Hi dav34e
Couldn't be happier with the rack. At the time I needed a really low profile rack to get in my garage. The rack is really strong and I constantly stand on it to load it without any flex.
Brad on the forum made it for me.
However since then front runner have also started doing a low profile rack which could be another option. Difference would be fitting and mine has mesh where as other rack has slats. Mine is also really easy to remove. Just 6 eyebolts.
Tyres have performed Ok. Though I did have a puncture on last expedition in the side wall. I don't think they are bringing them into the country any more. There is another thread on this.
