I have a roadworthy booked for tomorrow morning and everything is working except the headlights. When I pull the stalk towards me the high beam shines including instrument panel light.

Otherwise the lights are dead on Dip and high Beam.

Please help!

Sounds like you have blown the main light switch:(Do you have relays in the light circuit).

First impression is that your parkers/headlamp switch might be cactus. :(

My limited exposure to 'Deefers etc is a switch near the beam change wand which feeds power to the parkers only, or parkers plus heads. The Beam-change stalk is just to switch either Hi or Lo.

Or if yours incorporates everything together, then chances are it's knackered.

Get access to it and wriggle wires, check with a test lamp...and by then someone with a lot more knowledge will have surfaced here.....:p

Yes probably the switch. You will find that it has melted the contact into the plastic. This is because the current runs through the switch and gets hot. Relays can cure this as the switch then only switches the relay on so it does not have the full current going through it. You may be able to drill the contacts out and put a small screw and nut on it to get it going. When you pull the switch out it will be obvious.

Have fun!

Gyro is about to learn the hard way, why 'everyone' advises headlight RELAYS...

Brand new light switch. Not sure whether there are relays, what's the easiest way to check?

To be clear you have a new light switch or HI LO switch?

I bought the headlight upgrade kit but yet to install.

Have both headlight and hi-lo brand new.

There is a wire behind the speedo that has 2 points blue/red but can't recall taking it out. Looks like for fog light. Switch which I don't have one my '94 110

I had the same problem recently, really does sound like the switch, even though if it is new it should be OK. Does not take long to check there should be power in and out on park and main? Other than that ......?? Cant be a fuse as it works when you pull the stick back.

Why the new switch ? - Was the old one stuffed ? or intermittant? 101% sure that all the wires have gone back to their rightful homes ?

I think there is a relay somehwere that only energizes the headlights with the IGN on.. as Justinc suggests.

Ignition is on and the two park lights above the headlights come on.

Changes switches seeing as horn was not working

I know nobody's going to believe me but it fixed itself! Ignition was definitely on the first time I tried.

Thx for all the help

if you changed the dipswitch assembly then, i would as has been already suggested suspect the main headlamp switch.

put it down to "character" - you wouldn't get this sense of intrigue or excitement from a jap car

nobody seems to have mentioned it but, in an emergency, I have wired in an ordinary two pole 12v 25a switch (obtainable at any accessory shop) to enable temporary supply giving either all (parkers and h/ls) on or all off - got me by on a remote trip and replaced it when I got home

if you don't already carry a spare switch (which I do now) - such will get you by until you get one - even use the same wiring connectors

would it get you by for a pink slip ? .... can't guarantee it but it would here

Magic! You know that it's all done with smoke and mirrors.

Try keep the smoke in as that is what all Land Rover electrics need to work, for once it is out the electrics stop.

The mirrors are to see if there is any chance of keeping smoke in, to be used with care as it inverts the image, then the screw driver always tries to move to let the smoke out, but it does save the inversion of the eyeballs.
