I really miss driving a 110 as a daily driver, but I am so glad I didn't buy a Puma. I temporarily kicked the dog out of the County today whilst I moved the car around the paddocks then parked it back into a better location, it hadn't been moved in months and wouldn't crank, battery was low, one flick of a switch to connect the deep cycle. Cranked strong and fired up as always. Dog jumped into the passenger seat and we were set. The bellow of black smoke from fuel that must be 12 months old, a couple of laps and the Turdis was parked again. I'd like to see that trick replicated in a Ford powered overpriced people mover.

No chance you would be stuck for a week playing with a the emobilizer watsit or the central locking or some other bit of bul**** tecno crap. I have to move my ute on the weekend it's been sitting for about 4 months or more I'm confident it will fire straight up

My IIA diesel was parked out in the weather for >6 months.
Charged the batteries, and it started easily without aerostart. Made me question the need for an engine rebuild!

Baught a tdi200 defender yesterday, it had been parked up for over a year, through in a old battery and it kicked over no worries :)
Honestly though i think the puma would do that no problem as well, maybe if left for 5-10 years it might be a different story... we should put the 4bd1 to the test and fire up the stage 1 at dads place, its hasnt moved since about 92!

When I bought my SIII Diesel Station Wagon it had been sitting parked under a tree and unloved for 8 years. Drained the oil and changed the oil filter. It started with about 1 minute of cranking wth 20 litres of new diesel mixed with whatever was left in the tank. No aerostart and the glow plugs were open circuit.

Some would argue that Pumas are intended to be used regularly, rather than parked up for months or years.

Maybe it's to hark back to the halcyon days of the British motor industry when one needed two Series II V12 XJ Jags, one to drive when the other was in for a 'service' ?

I took delivery on a pallet of my 460,000km 4BD1 after it had been sitting in a shed in WA for 3 years, It then sat in my workshop for 6 months or so while I got the trans adapters made etc.
After I fitted the engine to the Rangie, I was wiring it up etc when I managed to touch the starter solenoid momentarily. Well, it started right up and ran with no exhaust connected, 3 to 4 year old fuel, cut fuel lines, no glow bla bla bla.
There you go:)

No I certainly don't hate the Puma, at all. it seems that the difference between old and new technology is being hilighted here, I love driving the Puma as much as my County, but I just choose to own a County

I wouldn't worry too much about it,nothing more than the same old crap.Today I've been busy starting my trip plan for January,Talawana to Windy Corner, then the Gary across to the Alice following Len Beadells footprints and then down to Adelaide in my over priced people mover,I'd ask you to come along but your 110 would be a liability. Maybe not.
The new product might actually be worth having given that they're not planning on taking an already well developed item and screwing it up with little things like putting the Tcase in at the wrong angle, tilting the gearbox so the drive flange operating angles dont match up.

Well I was about 1.5 feet away and to say I was surprised was an understatement. Not being familiar with the 4BD1 fuel shutoff at that stage I rushed around to the other side of the engine and pulled any lever I could fiind until it stopped:D
Wasn't actually too loud, the turbo was attached but there was no dump pipe so it was just a shock that it was running more than a noise issue.

So the old County has been doing a fair bit lately? You can sit here and put **** on Tdci's because you are doing nothing. I'm off to Moreton Island for 10 days with the family. Oddly enough, the Ford Powered Overpriced People mover seems to move a fair bit more than your County. I'll let you know how the fishing goes. See ya

Yawn. I really miss reading informed opinions, but I am so glad I didn't buy another County. I temporarily kicked the dog out of the Puma today whilst I drove it to work then parked it back into a better location, it hadn't been moved since yesterday because it IS my daily driver. Unlike my old County it always cranks first go, so there's never any need to connect the deep cycle. Cranked strong and fired up as always. Went off road the other day - the dog jumped into the passenger seat and we were set. There was no bellow of black smoke. A couple of hundred kilometers and the Puma was parked again never having missed a beat. I'd like to see that trick replicated in an over-aged under-powered County.

I don't have a dog. County starts first go everytime, gets driven to work and off road regularly. Your story is the same as mine would be albeit the County is the star not the villain in my story. Well...buggered tailshaft at the moment but your puma had the same ailment a month or two ago. :)

Dont worry Juddy,
Dobbo just doesn't want to admit how much he wishes he bought a Puma instead of the Colorado... being on the other side of the fence with that one i am happy in my decision and know which one i would rather have.
But being a county 110, TDI 110(baught another yesterday... its a disease i tell you) and Puma owner, i can say without a doubt give me the puma as a daily any day!

At least the ailment of both cars was due to vigorous off roads use. And I think that both have 1310 uni joints, so no difference there :D

Don't get me wrong I like these new fangeld things. But but there fitted with too much crap like an emobilizer that does just that when doing something simple like replacing a battery or the case of a thread the other day. No start because of a loose plug behind the dash can be a show stopper whether your in the supermarket car park or the Simpson where a simple old banger like a 4bd1 or tdi will happily run with out a single wire connected to the engine

And you know what, there's a thousand things that will stop a Isuzu LR that has nothing to do with the single wire, and many of us who drive scary electric operated TDCi's spend more time in the bush than all the Isuzu's put together,I'd put money on that ;). Pat

I jumped in my 2000 Toyota Corrolla the other day & reversed out of the driveway and the gearbox warning lights didn't come on. Then put it in drive and they again failed to flash. Drove to the shops and back without worrying about something going wrong.
Not as fun as my D2a though.

And don't forget that these simplistic fix-it-in-the-bush-with-a-hammer-and-a-roll-of-gaffer-tape-and-a-can-of-WD40 vehicles from yesteryear were the foundation for Land Rover's reputation for reliability!
