View Full Version : Easy way to remove the rear bumper

I hadn't got around to removing the rear bumper to measure-up for a RWC but don't have to wait any longer. Thanks to a small branch lying in the grass that kicked-up as it was driven over, I only had to remove 1 last clip on the left end and unclip the reversing sensor harness. I doubt I would have done all the damage the stick did though, as I suspect too many plastic brackets are broken and a replacement bumper will be needed.

Yeah, that was close!

I'm hoping the plastic brackets that go between the lower bumper and the steel bumper/chassis are available as the bumper itself is sufficiently OK.

Hi Graeme,
The rear wheel arch's have to be removed, remove the plugs inside the arch with a tool like this:
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/147273-trim-removal-tool-d3-d4-rrs.html#post1653585
There are also a couple of screws incl one under the front edge of the bumper close to the wheel arch.
Remove the screws holding the plastic brackets that I'm sure you broke under the bottom rear of the bumper.
Remove the tail lights - you will see some fixings in there too.
Lastly and the most difficult are the four plugs at the top of the bumper hidden be the tailgate, this is where the above tool really comes in handy!

Next you are ready to pull the skin off, start at the wheel arch top edge of the bumper and pull the bumper straight out on both sides, these are pressure clips. Then maneuver the rest off the car.
Unplug the reverse sensors if fitted.

Hi Rich,
No need to go through that lengthy process as the stick did it for me, although I had to finish removing the left wheel arch that no longer has its 2 middle brackets. I need to fit 2 reflectors whilst I see if I can get new bumper brackets.

Ha,

That is me in D3 a few years ago, I check if I have left the rear behind every time I have done that little dip.

Ran a Range Rover Club trip at Mt Walker a few weeks ago and visited that spot, everyone go through that little gully with platic bits in tact, but access height would certainly remove a pesky rear bumper !!

The section that I ran over without noticing was only about 2" thick with the other end about 4". But it was the kink in the middle that caused it to stick up on the RHS where the lower bracket was already weakened with holes from flying rocks. Perhaps if I'd stopped when the thumping started...

Stop?? Isn't that when you turn the radio up?

Cheers,

That's the rule isn't it? Anyway, it was only some dull thumping, not rocks scraping.

I had a customer find a really easy way of removing the rear bumper on a D4 last year... Very steep climb, stalled it near the top and slid backwards so fast that the back end buried itself and ripped it off... :(

Hi Graeme,

If you need a new rear bumper, or any parts from a rear bumper, I might be able to help you out. I have a spare Alaska white rear bumper and a spare Alaska white front bumper. (And no, I didn't pick them up off a 4WD track where Discovery's were leaving them behind. :D)
