Well 2 weeks ago I purchased a new GoPro Hero2 and Wifi remote, it works really well, love not having to get out of the car to turn it on and off.

Here's some new footage from last weekend on the Pipeline track at Newnes
https://vimeo.com/49629208 (https://vimeo.com/49629208)

For instructions on how the update the firmware properly, go to the forum link below so you can use your remote, lots of additional info to help with the process, one thing I discovered is, don't use USB 3 ports or your update won't work and you'll have to do it again, it can be a right pain in the bum, so follow and read all the info before you start the process.
http://goprouser.freeforums.org/inde...17e002a1dfafad (http://goprouser.freeforums.org/index.php'sid=5271d235c59fd2aff417e002a1dfafad)

There is a lot more you can do using the remote, it's not only just for starting and stopping the camera, you can change the settings for the camera as well using the remote, the 2 bottons on the remote mimic the 2 bottons on the camera.

Also the Wifi and remote can be used on the older GoPro, there is an firmware update for them too.

AND if you didn't think these cameras are tough, watch this

just a shame the contours picture is lacking IMHO...

I just got a HD hero2... finally, only got it cause it was cheap. Was waiting for the next installment from them, but figured I can grab a second cam when they arrive

I just bought the wifi combo to go on mine Baz.....

waiting for it to come in the post..bought it for the same reason getting in and out of the car..but also thought so many people are bringing gopros these day that it would be cool if we put them all on the one vehicle and then set them all off with the one remote.

as the remotes can control up to 50gopros:)

Got mine a few days ago, just wish it was available before we went away, now waiting on the iPhone app that should let you view what the camera is seeing live.

Quality of the picture is not as good, I have a friend with the Contour, and although some of the features are better(GPS version) the quality isn't as good as the GoPro, also they are stronger and more waterproof and cheaper too

Just so everyone knows as per Drovers question...all accessories fit both the hero and the hero2. when they bought out the hero 2 they deliberality never changed the dimensions so that accessories already available would fit.

for those thinking about buying wifi for the hero my undertanding is it will fit but you will not be able to stream via the app as this wont be compatible.

the contour GPS was a contemporary of the original go pro - things have changed in the last few years ;-)

Anyway, the newest models of both brands have really cool features such as 120 FPS in 720p or 60 fps in 1080p... the days of standalone video cameras are long gone IMHO...

The GoPro and Contour are the best cameras on the market now I think, both are extremely versetile, can be used indoors and out and simple to use, take great action videos and high quality photos too, do time delay photos and much more.

You really can't go wrong with either.

Hey Lou,
how much do the wifi backpacks go for and how did you get it into Oz, the website says they are not yet available her as they are still pending approval (i assume for the frequency the Wifi runs on), and therefore they won't ship here.

some of my gopro clips from the outback heritage drive-

barney they are available in Oz now they have been approved..I believe the combo kit is around the 150 mark I didnt pay that as I got it through a friend however maybe ask baz I assume he bought his here. They had to go through a different process of compliance because they are classed as a transmitting device.

I paid $132 off Ebay, delivered to my door in 2 days, then $314 for the GoPro Motorsport package, including a 32Gig card, same delivery time.

I'm wanting to get a carry around camera, normally use iPhone. The kids (and me) are keen on a waterproof compact. How suitable would the new go pro 3 be as a versatile carry around.

It would be ok as a carry around camera. Its a bit hard to use hand-held I'd probably get a little hand grip \ tripod so you can hold it up vertically and still keep it stable

I've got the hero2 and I think the controls are a bit clumsy - not as easy as a normal video camera. Great for shooting and editing when you get home. Biggest asset is variety of adaptors for the mounts, etc.
The Gopro videos on their site always look amazing which is something I've get to be able to achieve in real life. Notice how they're always in bright light? Very, very grainy in low light situations (eg indoors at night)

I have a hero2 and the wifi gear and it is simply a pain... I have the latest firmware for all parts but the camera constantly locks up. I now have andriod app and the lock ups are gone. However the whole wifi system flacky at best. The camera constantly looses settings. CONTOUR vs Hero... wish i hadnt sold my contours even if the hero has better video.

If someone needs a sturdy mount, I found this Black VectorMount.

Wow, pretty sexy mount - won't come off in a hurry. I like the wind tail vane idea but wonder how it would go on a windy day when I'm driving slowly; may end up facing the wrong direction.
The whole setup isn't cheap either is it?

Just went through the update firmware nightmare with another wifi back. The back itself updated OK but the remote got stuck in some form of loop.
The cineform software could see the remote reported it as updated, but no version available and the remote just had updating with an arrow in the display. (would still turn the camera on/off but no menus)

Few hours hunting on the net a couple of different PCs and I finally got the update to complete this morning. Shouldn't be that hard, selling a product that won't work straight out of the box isn't on.

Just as well they are a good little camera.

how could your computer see it?

your not supposed to update the remote by the computer.

or where you just checking that it had updated or not..

I had no dramas with my firmware updates at all...but I followd the steps to the absolute letter even if I knew I never had to really do something

Computer could see it, as in the cineform software knew there was a remote, identified it as connected to the WiFi back but couldn't retrieve a firmware version.

First one I did a few weeks back had no issues, one thing though, while searching the net for a solution it became obvious I was far from the only one to strike these problems.

btw - "your not supposed to update the remote by the computer."
You ARE updating it through the computer, just the link is via the wifi back, which is USB tethered to the PC, to receive the firmware update.

as for your BTW..

when I say your not supposed to update through the computer im talking about the remote plugged to USB it causes havoc with the firmware upgrades if you plug it in direct which is why they specifically say dont do it...

I was surprised your computer could see the remote if you were having so many issues, which is why I asked the question I did,
I had a problem stuffing up my very first upgrade (briefly), I could not get the computer to see the remote but it was only because I had missed a minor detail once I did that and tried again all was sweet luckily!!!:).
