View Full Version : The pleasure of driving a Landy.

Well, I really must confess: I absolutely love driving my landy :)
Nothing brings me quite as much enjoyment as climbing up into the cab, where it's always a pleasant temperature and setting off for home.
Window down, a cool breeze with the pleasant smell of country air, good tunes, a comfy seat really makes it a pleasure to drive.
With the Td5 pushing it along nicely, devouring hills with ease, giving plenty of power to surge past that one learner driver or truck, it's fantastic
Any buyers remorse? None whatsoever.
Even the bill for the new ATF cooler couldn't stop me grinning.
Occasionally I look at Defenders and think "Should I have gotten one of those?"
But right now, I can't see myself in anything except my beloved Disco :D
So thanks LandRover, You got it right with this one :)
Do you enjoy driving your landy, or is it the knowledge that you're superior to everyone else that keeps you hanging around? :p
Cheers

Hey Muppet you have a disease..its called Landroveritis, thats why all of us here are here:):)
To consul and reminisc about what we have or what we had. There is no cure.
You will just have to live with it for as long as you live. There will be times when it gets you down and no matter of pills will help. Others will look at you and snigger but deep down you know you are right and they have no idea.
I have had this disease since 1977 when I drove my bosses Rangie..I wanted one, I got mine in 1983, I havent driven anything else that I own since then. You normally dont stop at one I recently had 3 but I am down to 2, but that may change in the future. I still look forwad to driving mine every day I can. The pleasure never goes away..........:cool::cool::cool:

Never driven a new landy, maybe I should try one out some day.
I do love the way the old series 3 behaves though, and the old (Naval Police) bosses Firefly was a little gem to drive.

I have a 94 Disco, and I actually enjoy driving it than my 2012 Prado at times, it feels and handles like a 4wd should be, though the diesel Prado is zippier, the tdi makes me enjoy the drive more

There's just something about the way the Green and Gold oval seems to grin at you from the steering wheel (if you have it :p)
The only little niggle I have now is as I have to literally climb up into it because of the lift, I keep knocking me head on the top of the door :bangin:
There's something entirely satisfying about seeing the road stretch ahead, and knowing that you're going to enjoy every kilometre of it

I have to agree that I share the feeling. Returning home and backing the van down the side of the house again after a month of touring around Victoria with my wife and two kids. 4500km. It was a wonderful trip and my D2a performed exceptionally well. Reassuring, comfortable, safe and reliable. Returned a combined figure of 13.5l/100km. Not bad. Exceptional with a 23ft van in tow. It's certainly had it's moments but I love my car.

Well, I really must confess: I absolutely love driving my landy :)....
ditto

Even the bill for the new ATF cooler couldn't stop me grinning.

How did you know you needed a new ATF cooler? Was there a fan sound that seemed to come from the dash behind the steering wheel, but not immediately, rather after car had been going for a little bit? I just ruled out cooling system by having a check, flush of system at natrad yesterday just in case it was related to that but it is still evident

...

Do you enjoy driving your landy, or is it the knowledge that you're superior to everyone else that keeps you hanging around? :p

My disco doesnt make me feel superior, I just love it, feel getting a little of my identity back after a dissatisfying year in my employment and rough couple years before hand for other reasons (other girls go out and buy shoes, my retail therapy was my Disco) Love the height, and the shorter length tha nmy past two vehicles

Hey michelle, I actually had no idea I needed a new cooler until Slunnie gave it a once over.
Wet patches in the front wheel arches, as well as under it which indicated it was leaking.
It wasn't until I took it to get serviced and said "check out the atf cooler" that they said I needed a new cooler as well as new lines.
The noisy fan is a pretty common thing, can you hear it when the ignition is on but not the engine? Check the D2 section, there's a thread on cleaning it in there :)
And I can't help but feel superior, despite all the rubbish my friends give me :D
Oh, you have a ute?
As the saying goes "You go fast, I go anywhere" :p

I bought my 93/4 disco in 98 (I think) I have no intentsions of ever selling it - I drive it like I stole it, I've spent 12 or 13 years playing breaking repairing and modifying it but most of all enjoying it.

Still have heaps of plans for her including simply going for a drive just to enjoy her

I got bitten by the LR bug when a D1 driving friend of mine invited me to a drive day put on by LRA for the launch of the D2 somewhere on a property on the way out to Wisemans Ferry.

At the time I was dead set on getting a new VW Passat and was about to put a deposit on one. A mate of his came along as well in his Defender, so I think they were intent in converting me to the "dark side".

I can't even recall if I got to drive the D2 around the test track myself or was driven by a LR person that day, but I clearly remember being so impressed by the poise of the vehicle off road and its unique character. There was something about the car that I fell in love with there and then, perhaps it was the "un-Japanese" left field-ness of it, as well as all that heritage that came with the brand.

Anyway, I placed my order for a manual Td5 D2 a couple of days later. Today I'm onto my 3rd Disco (D2 -> D3 -> D4) and I'm hooked for life.

ps. I even got my Dad to trade in his VW Toureg on a RRS not so long ago :)

Once you get your first LR you're hooked, usually for life...

I got my first IIA 80" in 1989 and since then had 2 more IIa's, 3 RRC's and I'm onto my 2nd D2 but my favourite is the D1 I have now.

Bought it for a song, pulled it apart and added a 4.6 with lots of goodies.
Love the power and the rumble.

I entered her into the W4 challenge last weekend and had a blast even came second overall in the river challenge.

Started with a soft top series III, then a SIII 109 Wagon ... has a 10yr break, and now on the 3rd which is the D2. It was to be the family car, but then Mrs F went and bought an Impreza ...

... and now occaisionaly I find myself getting the urge to look into getting get a 130.

It IS a disease :p

I had my V8 D1 for 13-14 years and used to think I would never get rid of her. She was just sooo,, everything. IMO, nothing (other than a Rangie) came even close to her in any way you could think of.
My mates gave me heaps about her, but I did feel "superior" in her, in all aspects.
Then we bought a D2 V8,, woww. Unfortunatly for me, this was to stay as a "road tourer",, but still, the same feelings for her shone through.
If it wasn't for our long term plan, we'd have probably stayed the "D" series, they really hold their own,, comfort, ride, performance. What more could you ask for from a car??

Now we have bought the Defender
In so many ways, I still feel the same, (although I do miss the V8 and cruise control), but it's what we wanted to help us with extended trips etc.
But I'm still thinking we're superior ;)
