Had mine a week now....it's a good thing. I've also got Google Maps (and You Tube) running from icons on my home screen, even though my experience with the new Maps has been favourable.....the screen is lovely, the quality of finish first class, and holy cow does LTE get up and go.....4 bars in living room, 39.57 Mbps download ; 37.78 Mbps upload....it screams....🏁

I have one as well, got it on preorder, so far its been great.... except for the terrible battery life and the fact i can seem to buy a charge cable for it anywhere just yet as apple sold out and theres no after market ones available thanks to apples change in charge cable arrangement.

Everyone i know who has one has said the same thing about battery life.

No battery issue on mine....last charge details, and used for vids, calls, music, web browsing, forum replying (!) ......

38% batt - usage 5 hours 8 minutes ; Standby 19 hours 10 minutes. Many online tips available for efficient battery management.....battery conditioning via full deep charging / full discharge (until it turns off) important over the first 10's of recharge cycles.....

Are you on Optus or Voda? Or are you in an area with poor reception?

Mine usually last 2 days, some iView and call, browsing etc, but have good signal.

PC, but there are probs with the user file!

The more I use the iPhone5 the more I absolutely love it. It is a brilliant piece of work. Totally usable, totally trackable, and Siri is an absolute legend. I don't have to type anything any more, I just talk to Siri and she types it for me. Siri has typed all of this post. There are also so many excellent apps for the iPhone it can do just about everything.

I was considering a new 5, that was until I found out that all the accessories I have for the 4, 4s and iPods are not compatible. That was why I went with the iPhone initially as it is an easy charging/playing solution for the whole family.
I have never been thrilled with the battery life or reception, so hopefully they have improved that?
When I upgrade I will be looking at the other brands as my main retaining factor has gone.

Battery usage great on mine.....see pic (by clicking on it). Last charge was 26 hours ago....used for calls, vids, internet, messaging (and taking a screen capture of my iPhone 5 settings usage page and posting it here!) for a total time of 2 hours 13 minutes and I still have 60% charge. Nothing wrong with that. I have LTE on, WIFI on, Location services on...everything is on. Reception great too - I moved to Telstra. I don't think Apple should be obliged to keep a design ad Infinitum. If they are to design thinner, bigger, less weighty gadgets with better battery life ( and mine is definitely better than my old 4), then something had to give. I personally don't own any accessories that require the new adaptor, and the USB connector on iPhone 5 remains as before, so plugging into PC/Mac for charging, or using my 12 V car charger, all still do actually work as before.

I realize the logic behind the changes, it would be a hard market to keep up with, given the screen sizes and specs available on the competitors now.
But in my opinion the IPhone was appealing because of it's simple and interchangeable add ons, this appeal has now been removed, meaning I would have to buy extras to use my old gear.
I am sure that many people are mire than happy with the new design and features, but as I have never been truly happy with my iPhone I won't be getting the 5.

This is my take on this, I am sure that it will not be everbodys

You can really only use one of your "old" iPhone accessories at any one time, right? So why does not the purchase of but one adaptor (Apple at $35.00, others @ $20.00) not fix your issue? But if you don't really like the phone, or any particular aspect of the Apple environment, moving platforms is a good idea!

Try plugging your iPhone 5 into your hifi stereo dock, car dock, etc. Now go out and spend another thousand duplicating them all.

I don't have one! I don't have any of these extra gadgets....as I've already pointed out. Which is why I asked the question! So maybe you can explain to me why something like this....

Save $20 on iPhone 5 Lightning Adaptor - The Tech Loft (http://www.thetechloft.com/technology/apple/iphone-5-lightning-adaptor/)

won't do what you want. I don't have a "hifi stereo dock" to check out....But what is it about this adaptor that won't allow you to use it? And again - why the need to "spend another thousand duplicating them all??? You don't use your hifi dock, car charger and alarm clock all at once, do you?

At least we've put the bogus battery life argument to bed! :p

Just carry the small, light adapter..... In vehicle, you still just use the USB cable to plug in in a lot of vehicles. Or those with an iPod plug just put the adapter in between as you connect. Or if you are all so opposed to modern changes can I suggest you insert your 8 track back in the dash ;) I returned my iPhone 4S to cancel a Telstra contract and in the meantime have been using a 'droid phone whilst I waited for the iPhone 5 to arrive. All I can say - Thank goodness the iP5 is here - that 'droid POS was doing my damn head in!!!! Clunky, bug ridden, lagging, pile of rubbish! Even had a stint with a -yikes- Windows Phone... Smoother interface but not my cup of tea either... Everything in our lives / house is integrated. We have OS X computers, Apple TV units, iPhones, iPads etc... Everything works - everywhere. My workshop even has AppleTV :)

Yeah, Right!

An adapter cable is all well and good for the car and to use to odd, simple iPod/iPad/iPhone accessory but what if you have, like was mentioned way back, a hi-fi stereo interface where the i-device stands up happily in the adapter so you can read its display. This goes for other things as simple as extension speakers or even clock radios. Most of these ancillary devices have various base adapters already to ensure the device sits (or leans) at the correct angle to ensure good connection. None of these are designed or intended for an extra adapter instead of a device.

Your lightning adapter cable isn't worth a tinkers curse to solve that problem!! You need the genuine, solid, lightning to 30 pin adapter (currently valued at AUD35), and that leaves the iPhone hanging around in mid air. The added height, at best, is mechanically weak and unstable and, at worst, just may render the device unusable by it simply falling over.

Yes, I could get some convenience potentially by leaving this adapter plugged into the bottom of the phone under most circumstances, except when actually carrying the phone around.

Apple makes much truck about the simplicity, interchangeability and convenience of its devices. The need for this adapter widget just screws that up royally.

Them's my thoughts anyway, and why I won't be going down the iPhone 5 path (or its successor) for some time yet.

Cheers,
Iain

I have viven out 5 or 6 of them now at work, and a few users have specified Iphone4S's specifically because of the dock issue.

The thing i find curious is apple's insistance on a new non standard connector which potentially has some sort of chip in it so a cheapo chinese rip off cable has to be suitably enginieered to get around this extra money grabbing feature.

Also i am a bit curious as to why with them forcing you to spend $$ on new cables/cases etc, the phone itself still costs exactly the same as the 4S? I would have thought there would be a premium for it?

I feel apple has really missed the mark with their advertising campaign about thumbs and screen sizes. Why don't they just say it just works, as thats the best thing about the damn phone.

Thunderbolt isnt non std, it is the next gen std..

Like firewire and the now popular Express Card replacement for PCMCIA...

All done by Apple in early adoption.

As for the adapter.. Well...

I to, have a clock radio, amplifier, and multiple vehicles with iPod connectivity.

Heres the kicker - with a protective case so my work environment doesn't kill the phone in weeks it wont fit in any of the docks...:o

BUT... Using a iPod dock extender (30 pin to 30 pin) it will fit all devices.... and if you use a nano dock housing supports quite well...

The thunderbolt adapter is no different...

Damn.. People are so funny...

I purchased a new Amplifier to get HDMI 1.3 and iPod...
Then upgraded to another amp to get HDMI 1.4
Then upgraded the TV from a DVI model to HDMI..

And will get the new Pod dock when its released....

The iPhone 5 is brilliant, reliable and useful... Why wouldnt I adopt it...

DAMMIT.... Now I have to buy a new case

haahaa to have such a customer base. Apple like everything to be proprietary - for their own financial gain. Its not progress. Apple has the most locked in tech out there, everything needs to run apple and connect to another apple device otherwise it will run like crap.

Thunderbolt will not make it off apple devices, same way firewire failed to make much impact outside the mac sphere. USB 2-3 , eSATA were always a step ahead.

Apple has done some great work to get people onto new tech but for the most part it is dumbed down techno glitter. If everything in your house is apple and you cant wait for the next apple gizmo then you have been consumed and are blinded by the white.

Compare all the Iphone releases to the competition at the time and the Iphone 5 is easily apples worst release in the series.

Hi speed firewire still slays the competition for reliability and throughput.

SCSI is also a performance std, but often only high end servers...

I'm a MCSE amongst other things and totally sick of fixing PC crap..

People forget, these devices are suppose to make life easier, not harder....

The amount of stuff I've had to learn to keep WinSlows systems in check is ridiculous. To learn Apple - I learned Unix.... From books - as the system didnt need continuous upkeep.

Why is my house Apple? Because its reliable and it enhances my life not detracts from it with clunky behavior, poor performance or forbid... Needing continual hardware upgrades to match the latest hardware hungry offering from M$....

Lets not mention my "Ice Cream Sandwich" piece of **** Samsung which would be better served as a fishing lure......

I work on PCs a heck of a lot, and have lots of quirky behavior from them all the time - reboots required, driver updates, clunky behavior "Not responding" is the most common phrase from my Win7 work Laptop...

My first MBP is an original unit which only became obsolete last year.... Not bad for 8 years old.... And still outgunned my i5 PC on most tasks....

And before you point fingers at Apple - Thunderbolt was developed by INTEL.... Apple is an early adopter....

Sony Vaio Z units runs the original Optical version / hybrid with USB... :)

Dumb down Techno glitter.... Great line.... Pity its wrong... One of the most power OS, full product line integration, superior security, clean interfaces and machines - with less **** and glitter than most PCs...
Brand identification, useability, stability.

TCO for a Mac is so much cheaper than a PC - especially if you keep up with every OS update :D

My last 30 cars have been propriety too... No kit cars in my stable...

Considering "dumbed" isnt even a word that statement is ironic...

it was selected for that purpose, well done :p

My post was a bit of flame bait but I couldnt help myself. We will agree to disagree... I work with PC's and MACs and have more issues getting MACs to behave. But then I use IOS alot less so that is more than likely a factor.

Having the full MAC ensemble is not economical, and not the smartest way to ride the technology wave. Simple fact.

The whole MAC vs Windows thing is not what I'm on about here.. I use Unix variants, windows, IOS . Its not even mac vs PC because as you say Apple source their tech from the same hardware developers as other computer manufacturers. A personal computer is a personal computer whatever the branding/software it presents/runs.

I have completly silent computers, reliable computers and hardware that does not bear an Apple logo. There is a huge amount of choice outside of Apple and there is technology that will be on the next apple realease available now. You can have it first, cheaper and upgrade it for longer if you build you own systems, mix and match without brand loyalty.

I dont agree with Microsoft's grab on software and the PC market but I'm starting to think Apple are even worse when it comes to locking people into using their software products. We have seen Microsoft taken to court for anti-competitive practices with software bundeling , I'm suprised Apple has not.

Anyway I digress.. I like to tinker with things, theres potential for greater rewards - this is why I enjoy my old land rover and it's why I am not interested in pre-configured, over priced, overly-protective, out of the pretty box Apples.

If all you want is for something to be easy to use, reliable, and do whats advertised - YAWN... join the masses and surf the net on your apple and drive your lexus.

The point is, google maps is very good and what Apple have done is release their own version which is undeniably worse. Constraints yes and perhaps locked in is not the best way to put. Funny you should mention iTunes as that is a prime example of the kind of practice that turns me off Apple products. Last time I had an Ipod I was forced to use Itunes to manage my audio.. that annoyed the hell out of me. Itunes worked like crap on the PC and I'm convinced they intentionally made the PC version buggy.

You will find that with almost any other non apple mp3 or smart phone device you can choose from a whole host of audio player/management software and even just HDD drag and drops. Perhaps that has improved on more recent apple devices but its a good example of how they are constantly trying to ring you into using their software suite and hardware.

If you have an ipod its better to have one with a macbook and better to connect that to a mac airport, and sync to an iphone. You end up with the whole mac package just to get all the features working properly.

And then when you take your device to a friends house or a party you find you cannot plug your device into the sound system because you didnt bring the adapter for the audio connection, you did not bring your charger and cannot use the multitude of usb connectors that all other phones use , and you cannot transfer your files to a computer that does not have iTunes.

"It’s not about copying Samsung, it’s about big industry, banks and transport systems the world over already making use of NFC. When I went over to the UK in the summer people were already using NFC to tap in payments."

Answer - No, it's about the fundamental flaws in the tech right now. They exist.

"And as for security the Iphone5 has already been hacked.. most smart phones are easily hacked - unfortunately the user will always be a liability."

Answer - I didn't say the iPhone hasn't been or couldn't be hacked...you're changing the topic....we're talking about NFC, a hacker's paradise, a nascent tech that you suggest Apple should have embraced yesterday.

"Ok you wait for apple to guide you into iPayments"

......???? As opposed to being guided by other companies into their technologies...see Inc's comments above in relation to this odd argument.

"Its status as market leader has been brought into question with the iPhone 5 so .. YES."

Answer - the 3 key points (with supporting articles) I provide say otherwise.

"The point is, google maps is very good and what Apple have done is release their own version which is undeniably worse. Whether it gets to be better than Google Maps or not this is a big win for Google and they have won it on the Iphone launch which is great for Android. Big egg in the face for Apple."

Answer - No, rather, the point is this ; new mapping software needs to be both released and used by people in the real world to improve. A secondary point is this - you can still use GM if you wish.

The point is, google maps is very good and what Apple have done is release their own version which is undeniably worse.

but acknowledged as a better first effort than googles :p

the fact is depite the bleating about being locked in to applemania you can install google maps if you so desire and use that app if you consider it superior.

you can unlock an iphone in the same amount of time it takes to root an andriod phone.

as for flash...

it is an acknowledged hazard that most can get by without. unless of course you spend much of your time on the likes of redtube :D:D

but from a developers point of view and i quote

Current Flash sites could never be made work well on any touchscreen device, and this cannot be solved by Apple, Adobe, Andriod, Google or magical new hardware.

That’s not because of slow mobile performance, battery drain or crashes. It’s because of the hover or mouseover problem.

Many (if not most) current Flash games, menus, and even video players require a visible mouse pointer. They are coded to rely on the difference between hovering over something (mouseover) vs. actually clicking. This distinction is not rare. It’s pervasive, fundamental to interactive design, and vital to the basic use of Flash content. New Flash content designed just for touchscreens can be done, but people want existing Flash sites to work. All of them—not just some here and there—and in a usable manner. That’s impossible no matter what.

All that Apple and Adobe could ever do is make current Flash content visible. It would be seen, but very often would not work. Users would hate that broken promise much more than they hate gaps in pages, missing banner ads, and the need to download a game once from the App Store instead of re-downloading it every time they visit a Flash game page.

Mouseover examples:

* Video players where the controls appear on mouseover and hide otherwise. (This seems to be the norm, in fact. Whereas a click on the same video does something different: usually Pause. Try Hulu for instance.)

* Games where you steer with the mouse without clicking (extremely common).

* Menus that popup up subpage links when you mouse over a main button, vs. going directly to a main category page when you click.

* Buttons that have important explanations/summaries on mouseover, which you need to understand before deciding what to click.

* Functions that use mouseover to preview and click to commit; such as choosing hair colors for an avatar: you mouse over the colors until your character looks the way you like, and then you click to commit.

* Maps and diagrams that don’t use click at all, but pop up info as you mouse around.

* Numerous other custom mouseover functions that “just work” with a mouse and need no explanation.

None of these things can work right with a finger (or traditional stylus) because on a touchscreen, pointing at something without clicking isn’t a mouseover: it’s just holding your finger vaguely in the air. The device doesn’t even know it’s happening.

yawn

and there are plenty of ipod and iphone managers around tho you do need to install itunes to get the interface drivers, but you dont have to use it.

linux even does it without issues

back to my s3 .....

NFC is fast becoming an industry standard for contactless payments it isnt going anywhere any time soon. How am I changing the topic by bringing up iPhone 5 security flaws? If the iPhone 5 can be hacked without NFC is that not a concern to you? NFC venerabilitys will be ironed out same as the iPhone 5.

Answer - It's irrelevant because we both concede that any phone can have security issues that require operator diligence....but nothing you can do when using NFC today will render you safe from potential attack. So a big difference actually.

Answer - your Android is released with an inferior microprocessor ( even though it has a higher clock speed and 2x the cores, it still can't beat the A6 - fact), inferior engineering, an inferior screen, and an inferior web browser if you want to start a list.....all Android/Samsung fails too by your standards. The nexus 7 is arguably faster...

there is a range of browser choice on android - last time I had a go with Opera mobile it was pretty impressive.

I'm not saying the Iphone 5 is a crap phone. It just looks to me as if Apple are loosing the lead, starting to make the risky choices - perhaps missing the guidance of steve jobs. Maybe its only downhill from here! :p

Phone wars are fun. I love my 2 year old Android phone but agree iPhone is better for some.

The real reason not to chose Apple is once you're on that ship Apple can make choices you're not happy with, like removing maps or changing connectors or forcing the use of software such as iTunes. If you're happy with this then fine but many aren't so they chose Android. At least with Android my USB connectors are standard and I can continue using turn by turn navigation like I have for the past 2 years, something Apple will take a while to fix.

Android really is better in a number of ways. Navigation being the biggest deal breaker. Android navigation simply is the best out there and makes your phone extremely useful.

It was only a drama because she is not a technically savvy person and one of the main functions for her ipad is watching crap American TV shows over youTube that otherwise mysteriously keep getting turned off when they are on the TV. It was a simple safari link on the home screen to the mobile youTube site and all is fine. She has no interest in following any media surrounding iOS6 and how to make it do things it used to straight out the box. As far as she is concerned its just supposed to work.

I love it when this is the answer from the apple side of the fence, take the stock product and void its warranty and support, so that it will do something simple you want it to do.

I know there's rootkits for androids too so its a double edged sword.

Apple is not my thing, I dont like it for personal use, but for work, I love it!

Users all want Iphones, mainly for the "look at me" bling factor. I love it when they ask for stuff, and we give them corporate Itunes which only upsets them more, then they ask fr various mobility things, and the response is sorry, corporate environment, no jailbreaking permitted, no you can't have full itunes due to security issues, and no you can't do this that and the other, makes them very easy for me to support :)

Mind you it upsets me we always get a percentage of users smashing them when there is a new model out, allthough they are smartening up now realising I just replace the screens at $70 a pop rather than a new $600 phone and they drop them in the toilet so they are really stuffed and thus get the current model.

I must admit the 20% or so of users who choose windows/android phones seem to keep them untill they break, which seems to be about three to four years at the moment.

Yesterday I had a user look at me and say "I cant have that, thats old" to an Iphone 3GS which was a handmedown from their director who upgraded to a 5, my response was "well work doesn't give me a smart phone or any phone at all, infact its in my job description to supply my own so a work paid for one to use how what and where I like would be great so I think your doing well".

in my view, apple use to be the leader and eeveryone else played catch up, I feel its now the otherway around. I dn't really ccare tha much about it though.

Ohh and I still use my Beta decks allot :) Hf950's :)

It's merely an option my friend. If you need to claim warranty, restore it - simple. Or if it worries you that even this might not be possible, maybe look at doing so after 12 months. Just providing possibilities for those who wish to use their mobile phones to guide cruise missiles and the like.

Mine does everything I want. Simple or otherwise. I'm not interested in this option....but the tied to App Store argument, that this comment were in response to, is quite tedious. Nevertheless - when people claim zero ability to do anything else other than what the Apple environment offers, it is perfectly valid to demonstrate available options.

What I don't want is antivirus software or dodgy NFC technology, all operating in a clunky freeze prone environment - and yes, my wife has a work HTC on JB and I agree with Inc (see his post in Computers) regarding the user experience. We all have a choice. I might also add that I find it interesting how many Android supporters come into any internet discussion, regarding iPhones/iPads/iMacs etc - only to espouse the virtues regarding "their" stuff. I scan articles on all sorts of tech - other phones, tablets etc. There is not the same reciprocal attention given to these items. That is quite telling I suspect.

And in reply to your opening line; well, I love it when commentators give us words of wisdom such as, "users all want iPhones mainly for the look at me bling"....speaks for itself. Fail.

Really no navigation comes close to Google's. Street view being the main reason. This is great as you're pulling up to your address the street view image appears on your phone. Look at your phone, look out the window. Yup I'm here. Excellent if you have to get around the city a lot for work like me.

Chrome to phone. I can be viewing Google Maps on my computer, hit an icon and it brings up the map on my phone. How many times have you been looking at an address moments before you walk out to jump in your car to get there? This is really handy and saves time.

If one of my contacts has an address I just hit the navigate icon next to it and it takes me there. Let me guess in Apple world you have to go to your nav app and type the address? I'm sure Apple's locked it down though so this works but only with their broken map app.

In the end competition is good, for me I love maps and it's one feature that saves me time day to day. Apple will get there but then there'll be something else that either Apple or Google are better at.

That's it - guess away. Hey - I'm not going to change phone platforms over navigation. That may be of prime importance to you, and that's valid - but no deal breaker for me. I just ask Siri, so wrong - no typing - and so far, my Apple maps has taken me exactly where I need to go - wow - amazing!

It's about the navigation sure street view works through your browser I was talking about the navigation app. It's handy when you're within a few meters of your destination and your phone handily displays the picture. Street view would work on any device with a browser I'm guessing, just not through navigation.

So on an Apple you can Safari to iPhone driving directions have it navigate you to your destination and then show street view upon your arrival? Apple will get there eventually. What about walking or bike directions? That has saved me a few times. I love navigation on my phone, the fact is Android is just better here... for now.

Above all I have this on a 2 year old device and it runs OK. Sure it's not iPhone or SGS 3 quick but the features are there for me now. I go buy an iPhone 5 and I'd steeping back in functionality from my 2 year old HTC. That just doesn't make sense.

You don't seem to have a clue about the Mac / iPhone platform. That's fine - but it's less than accurate to presume you have functionality that is somehow unique - you don't - not at all.

Your assumptions, again, are incorrect. No - you don't need to type in an address with iPhone. Yes - you can navigate using GM or the Apple map app and see street view on arrival. You can also access walking/ bike routes too - OK - only walking on the Apple Map at present - I can live with that. Don't worry, Android users will get the picture eventually.

Got my 64gb on Saturday. Seems to work pretty well. I decided to set it up as a new phone. Seemed a good time to start fresh.
Transfer of music took probably 2hrs to go through. But thats searching for what I want from 120gig and my phone has 9.5days worth of random tunes now.
Speed seems alright. Phone reception is better. Telstra are still the ones stuffing that side up (to much congestion). LTE is currently magic.
Maps are ok. But not as good as the google maps app. NavFree is still free and works much faster.
I am pretty happy with it.

Now, I am following this post with alacrity because I am hoping the thread will answer a question for me. But more on that soon.
About my take on it:
I am appreciative of technology, but prefer it to be used for good not evil. I am a little straight and narrow with my technology choices per se....If I want to know the time, I look at my watch. I expect my phone to go 'ring ring' not play some rappers 16 bit offering. I like my music to be crisp yet have depth and minimal distortion. I don't need to know what my mate had for dinner or who he's with this exact minute. If I want to chat, I'll ring. But that's just me:D

On the other hand and back to the question I hope answered via this thread....which phone should I buy my cheese and kisses for Christmas, i5 or S3?
My research has not clearly articulated a winner but I am drawn to the S3 precisely because it has less proprietry stuff. The only apple gizmo in our house is my sons iPod. It just seems I could make the S3 talk or connect with most other stuff in the house including my MP3 collection.

Please drive this thread to a suitable conclusion, leaving me a simple choice to make.:D:p

The Galaxy's keyboard is annoying, & it's auto suggestion / correction feature drives me insane!!! It makes it ridiculously inefficient, which is a bad thing when we're supposed to use them for all our paperwork, email etc.
The Galaxy came with a ton of it's supplier's software on it. More irritations albeit not Samsung's fault. I still haven't found out how to make the home screen the one on the left instead of the one on the right.
Most of the IPhone has been intuitive. A BIG plus in these days of highly limited owner's manuals.
I would be prepared to try a Windows based device again, but I don't think I'd bother with android At least not in the immediately forseeable future.

Ralph - did you read the ABC tech editor's take on the best 4G and 3G phones? My last post has the link. The analysis is quite encompassing and might help you answer your own question.

Nup, didn't, but I will now!:D
Read it and really none the wiser :( I actually think that maybe we don't need 4G making the S3 a great older, established value option. If I go 4G then prob the iPhone.
I dunno.....more research needed

Ok, More thoroughly read now and some other research as well.
Question: Do I need 4G? I am leaning toward the S3 3G but could be convinced about i5 but what benefit to me will be 4G?

Cheers

Ralph, 4G provides much faster bandwidth - that is all. At present, the actual delivery of 4G is quite patchy....Telstra offer the best coverage...Vodaphone none, but 4G availability will improve rapidly over the coming months/years. A 4G phone simply uses 3G when there is no 4G signal.

So it's not really a question of "do I need it?"....4G won't give you access to anything 3G won't. What it does give the user is a seamless experience doing any smart function on the applicable device, because it is significantly faster than a corresponding 3G device. It is very noticeable. I clocked my iPhone 5 @ 45.16 Mbsp download and 39.79Mbsp upload speed when I had 5 bar 4G (in my living room), and that means the thing is effectively instantaneous when executing any phone (internet) function.

So - if the cost of a 4G handset is too great, just get a 3G phone. If you can afford it, a 4G phone will provide better performance in the long term.

What you really need to decide on is this - which ecosystem do you want to use? Android or iOS (or widows etc). This is a no brainer question for most people and is really the decisive factor in handset choice.

I've never used either so this is the difficulty:p. No brainer you say? Maybe, but what comparison method did they use to so easily make a choice? Ahhhh the dilemma:D:D:eek::(. Should the money stretch, I'll prob go i5 but only because my son has an iPod and mum at least knows how to use that! If not, 3G S3 will be the go simply coz it's not apple and most feedback say it's a solid phone.

The no brainier comment was prefixed by, "for most"....this means that most people are either extremely pro one, or anti another ecosystem. I understand you are neither. I'm trying to help!

Comparison methods? Let me give you my answer. In my opinion, iOS is so far ahead of anything else - so I use iPhone (+ iPad/iMac). Why iPhone in particular? 2 benchmarks that I feel are fundamental for using digital gadgets, and I suspect these will matter to you too...

1) Security - very important for obvious reasons, and iOS is a strong performer here.... http://www.zdnet.com/the-best-mobile-os-security-showdown_p7-1339314044/

2) App availability (and apps made specifically for the type of gadget you are using) - iOS all the way.....http://bgr.com/2011/12/05/available-apps-across-major-mobile-platforms-approach-million-app-milestone/

Consider any other factor, important to you, in making your decision too of course. And then look at how each ecosystem scores in regard to your important factors. If you don't know what is important to you, then perhaps this final link (from me!) might help....

Hey Scallops, No offence intended, I know you are trying to help and I appreciate it!:D
All I meant by the no brainer comment was that people are very pro or anti in this area and I don't know why! Must be a holden/ford thing or else daddy had one so I'll get one too!:p

I sat down with guys at work who have iPhone 5 and others with 4G GalaxyS3. They let me play and make a call etc and I was impresed with both but am leaning now toward the 4G S3.
Based purely on the proprietry nature of apple annoys me. Not saying it isn't good, just maybe I am not ready to pledge allegiance lol.

That being said, another guy at work had a Motorola Razr and I like it as well, so I think android for me and wife this time around.

Thanks for the help and please don't think ill of me lol.

Cheers
Ralph

Congrats on making a decision. I'm sure the Samsung phone will be a good thing for you.
