View Full Version : maximise suspension travel?

I'm looking for some advice on how to maximise the suspension travel on my D2 without lifting more than 2 inches.

I wasn't too worried until I took it to the Watagans and lifted one back wheel nearly 2 feet off the ground!!

My current setup consists of D2a rear springs in the front, OME +2" D1 rear springs in the rear (with poly-airs), and Suspension Stuff Silver shocks all round. I was told the shocks were for a +2" lift, but they are no longer than the standard LR shocks.

Currently at full droop I am nearing the limits of the brakelines and ABS wires, but I have a set of extended brake hoses and from what I've read on here there should be enough ABS line available to extend these. At this point the springs are about 4" from dislocating.

So without going for a Slunnie-style 4" lift, what are my options? (my budget is somewhat limited):(

You could try a front swaybar disconnect.

I have one on my non lifted D2a with SLS. Slickrock Fabrications in the USA were the supplier. They sell them as a pair, but you really only need one (mine is fitted to the passengers side).

On standard suspension with the swaybar disconnected, there is much more articulation up the front end. The axle "walks" the terrain while the body doesn't pitch like it does with the sway bar connected.

Cost me around $100AUD ... Cheap & worthy improvement.

Hey Alex,

Initially I would look to install the brake lines and you will more than likely need to extend the rear ABS lines (I would use extensions rather than extending). The front ABS line you can probably just pull through. To make all of this work you will need longer shocks to then allow more drop travel - check how far you can go without dislocating the springs from the perches and that you have clearance under the front Xmember (or adjust it). For the front springs I would also look to use D2 2" lift front springs as these will be softer than the rears up front and so give you more compression travel and hopefully a greater free length. They will also suit the OE lower perch which the rear springs dont.

You may also review the cost/benefit of all of this because in reality you might only gain something like 50mm extra travel at each end.

BTW, 4" of additional travel before the springs start to dislocate is a lot of force on the shocks!
