View Full Version : Texas raise speed limit to 85MPH

Well actually only on a single Toll road at this stage it seems.
Texas raises speed limit to 85 mph: Other states could, too (http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/story/2012-09-09/texas-interstate-speed-limit/57701428/1)
It doesn't seem that long ago though when the States had the national limit of 55MPH so quite a jump from those days and wasn't that all about saving fuel or something.
Got me thinking what is the highest speed allowed in Oz, do NT still have roads that are unlimited?
Cheers

Yeah but across the US they also don't have a (stupid) separate speed limit for heavy vehicles.
I spent a bit of time in Texas earlier this year and that motorway is exceptional.
...as are most roads in the US.

NT is 130, I think.
Which is less than 85 mph.
As 85mph is 135kph
The only experience of the states was in Hawaii last week and I did 70mph at a push before you have to turn quickly or fall of the island. But the limit there is 70mph on some parts if the motorway.

Yes the max speed limit in the NT is 130kmh. No more unlimited speed there.
In the US, there are actually lower speed limits on some roads, where you can get fined for driving too slow. Good idea I think. Stops people road hogging on motorways.

Last year I drove I80 from Reno NV to Lancaster PA and the speed limit was 80 most of the way. A Highway Patrolman in Wyoming told me they don't enforce below 95 unless there is bad driving involved. The trucks on the interstates seem to get along the same speed as other traffic except in California where the heavies stick strictly to the right hand lane and travel at 55-60 except in LA where they travel on the freeways at traffic speed.
Some state roads in Nevada don't have speed limits.
The roads are very good but the locals complain about them.

Sure beats our freeway limits of 90, 100, or 110km/h (56, 62, 68 mph). Exceed those and one is worse than a mass murderer.

I will have to work out how to up load photos my GPS max speed is 260kph from the old NT open speed limit days?
Now, anyone believe it was in my disco?
East coast motorways are easily safe for 160kph trouble is all these years of bunk that if you go over 110 you will kill the entire human population, the roads are up to it, the cars are up to it, are Australian drivers though?

I have a Kodachrome 35mm colour slide taken over my shoulder in my EH Holden 149 Standard "Showroom Stock" road race sedan. The speedo needle has wound out of sight past the 120 mph mark. This was on the now New England Highway, Missen's Flat, Spring Creek, between Allora and Toowoomba. The speedo was most likely wildly inaccurate but the car could pull 6,200 rpm down the straight at Lowood on a 3.55 diff and 175 x 14 Dunlop SP41's.
Drum brakes, woo hoo!!!
I don't know how to put slides onto the computer.

Speed limit(?) sign in a diner in Williams Arizona - Route 66 - may have been a genuine sign back when engines/transmissions and tyres would 'talk' to you, and you knew when it was getting time to back off a bit...

You are obviously fishing for a reaction with that post. Either that or you have never driven on the National highway north of Newcastle. try not to make it so obvious next time, you might get someone in. .....oh..... you got me..... yeah. Bob

I think it is pretty good except for the bits between Urunga and a bit north of Coffs, and from South Grafton to Ballina. Best thing to do with it would be to ban caravans and motor homes.

Guys
A few decades ago the State of Montana (Big Sky Country) had no speed limit for cars, just what was called "fair and reasonable" during daylight hours, and then something like 75 at night for cars , 65 for big trucks.
All worked fine until the car companies, (Mercedes USA comes to mind) who started using the state highways as high speed proving grounds.
That activity dicked it all up and 75 MPH is now the Interstate limit.
Generally speaking the two states in the northern tier, Wyoming and Montana don't enforce the limits unless you are driving recklessly.
You can even pack a firearm with no problems either!
Two of my most favorite states in the Union to visit, and I cross them often going up to the missus home in Idaho.
Here's a tourist clip of Wyoming. Where the public rest stops, lay-bys, and ablutions are clean & well kept and don't smell like lion's dens!
Great place to run your LR and "stretch" it legs.
No state taxes either! Gotta be a plus!

No taxes was good. $2.25 for a draught beer in Hardin, MT. $4.20 for a six pack of 16oz cans of Milwaukee strong stuff. I thought the guy in the cornerstore said $14.20 and told him he had given too much change. funny liquor laws though. A "liquor store" can only sell wine and spirits, not beer. Beer is bought at the corner store, supermarket, and gas station.

This was recently posted on the Stromtrooper motorcycle forum:
I didn't realize this hasn't been around for a while. It came to mind when reading the news article about Austin-San Antonio making an 85mph speed limit for a new toll road they're about to open. The article mentioned it being the fastest speed limit in the US, which made me think of Montana.
Unfortunately for me, I had nothing worthy of this speed limit at that time. Nevertheless, it did make for some relatively fast trips. Interesting this was also in effect pre-1974... too early for me to be operating any motors

Yes a bit weird from many a perspective. A lot depends upon what county you are trying to buy booze!
Here in Colorado the gas stations and supermarkets can only sell 3-2 beer.
(3.2% strength.) The "liquor" stores do the rest.
Recently they were allowed to be open on Sunday. whoopdy do!
Then the supermarkets wanted to compete, with regular booze , wines, proper beer etc. That went down like a turd in a punch bowl; too much competition for the established liquor stores I suppose.
Yes there are some things that will surprise you! Like drive in liquor stores in Sheridan Wyoming but then they have braille at the drive through in banks in Colorado. I don't know what is scarier anymore, drunks driving cars or blind buggers at the wheel mate!:D

I was a Dept. of Social Security field officer for a while. One regularly came across Blind Pensioners who still had driver's licences. They have to be legally blind, not totally in the dark. They usually said something like "I only drive down to the local shops". Yes, right past the school.

Our Subaru Liberty does that. All gauges do a full scale deflection when the ignition is turned on. It is a gauge check, but I just think it looks cool!

While I was stirring the pot, I did actually say motoway not highway, or to clarify dual lane and above so slow vehicles can use the left lane and faster in the right ones.
I can't see any justifiable reason for the speed limits other than nanny state or revenue raising in this day and age of quality of cars and roads. Obviously drive to the conditions is paramount, my thoughts any way

Biggest issue for me when driving on Aussie freeways is people sitting in the overtaking lane bang on the speed limit. I'm sure some do it on purpose to ****
other drivers off and then theres those who are in la la land and seem oblivious to the fact that the lane is for overtaking.
When driving in Europe earlier this year it was nice to see that the overtaking lane was used just for overtaking and almost everyone would quickly get out of the lane when overtaking was done, handy when a big Merc is zipping along at 200KMH +.
I was amazed at the speeds in Germany and how well the roads worked considering there was sometimes 150KMH difference in speeds between the lanes. Only once did I see a near miss where a Merc came flying along at probably 250KMH and someone pulled out to overtake another car at about 150KMH, well the Merc had about 200 metres to lose 100KMH. he did it with smoke coming off his brake disc and probably required a change of underwear at the next service station :D

There is the odd problem on the (legal) high speed roads.
Speed doesn't kill, but speed differential might run things closer than otherwise may be the case.
Personal opinion is that we have plenty of roads around that would be fine at 130-140kph, but any higher the issue will be speed differential and driver behaivor, far too many drivers that have no ability to observe what is happening around them plan for the conditions.

That was in Hardin, MT, which is administered by Big Horn County but actually lies within the Crow Nation. I was told that the Crow refuse to collect taxes for the white man. Plenty of drunk Crow about. That Milwaukee stuff was 9% and bloody good. I got on the turps one night in Cheyenne, WY, where draught beer was $2.75 for a schooner.

ahh yes the old "Calibrate all gauges" on start up photo. From memory theres a sequence of button pushes that can be done as part of the startup/setup/clear fault codes mode that makes them sweep backwards.

I would be prepared to forgo the ban if the bloody old dodderers would drive at the speed limit, not 30 k's below, and were required to pull to the side of the road whenever another vehicle was behind them and wishing to overtake .

I used to do around 60-65000 miles a year in the UK. Dodderers & Sunday afternoon drivers give me very bad road rage. I mean, how hard is it to look in your rear view mirror & see you're causing a traffic jam?
My view is it's a courtesy thing - if you want to potter along (& let's be honest we all enjoy pottering sometimes) then keep an eye out. Either speed up or pull over & let the driver in a hurry get on.
I do think Oz speed limits are ridiculous on the main roads. Maybe the Gov't thinks Aussies can't drive?
Qld. Gov't has announced extra speed cameras in the new budget, that they expect to bring in millions of dollars per year. So there we have it - at least one Gov't has finally admitted that it's revenue raising & not about safety.

The Redman tribal areas are generally free of taxes and as such are autonomous.
Here is a document explaining it all:-
https://www.jct.gov/publications.html?func=startdown&id=1278
It will largely explain the situation which exists in all the tribal areas across the USA.
Do you folks have anything like it in Oz.
Curious?
