The last week of travel we have stayed in caravan parks every night and to my surprise quite a number of camper trailers

Just some observation

Our canvas throws to the passenger side so we reverse in like a caravan and everything is pretty much laid out correctly, slab, fit width wise, power etc

Trailers that throw to the drivers side just looks odd, one set up spun there trailer 180 degrees to look like the rest of us

The other problems regardless of throw is new camper extend out for miles I.e. have a massive room off to the side and don't fit across the allocated space so they end up turning the trailer 90 degrees. A couple of trailer it looked quite a struggle.

I guess camper trailers are not really design for powered van site, but with so many traveller reliant on 240v I guess they adapt

Really interesting point for those who are buying or building!

I'm with you Kelvin, I've never figured out the 'benefit' of an over the side camper trailer that throws the 'wrong way'. When propping on the roadside I feel it's a lot more convenient/safer/private to have the tent throw to the passenger side.

As you note it is common for modern over the side campers to just keep on going. The amount of extra poles, canvas and bits and pieces not to mention the complexity and time to erect/pack up would drive me nuts.
I sometime think the 'benefit' of extra room is represented as a plus so as gain a sale from the uninitiated, where realistically, for touring I see it as a negative. If more room is needed for kids etc add on walls to the awning is a better idea or an optional room(s) on the other side of the awning. (or even a separate dome tent(S) for bigger kids). This gives a lot more versatility in the long run.

Our old over the (left) side camper threw about 1 metre wider than the trailer which is small by todays standards but was really too big for the two of us when touring. My ideal camper would be a 'symetrical' throw over the left side or a rear throw hard top as I get older and my joints creakier.

I too would prefer not to stay in van parks but our itinerary with the kids over school holidays it was best fit.......plus finding a place to camp by yourself over school holidays is hard no matter where you choose to travel.

I think camper trailers are becoming popular with young families because the imported jobbies are quite affordable. Nearly everyone was brand new.....

Mine throws out the drivers side, which when we stayed at a few caravan parks was a pain for set up as offen i would have to swing trailer around etc, but when bush camping dosent matter.

i have 3 kids so have got the bigger tent which sometimes is a struggle to fit on caravan sites, but agian i didnt buy it to stay at them all the time.

Pretty much the same as us, three kids but I only have a roof top tent on top of the trailer. The kids are in a team of there own......which causes its own problems at van parks.

Off to a friends cattle property next trip, a massive campsite to ourselves.

Ha Ha.
My 1997 Camp'o'matic hard floor has doors and zips on both sides so that the awning can be put on either side. Mine closes with the awning on so i have never used the RH side awning zip , and rarely use the door.

It fits perfectly in van parks as the awning guy ropes fit outside any hard stand area and hard stands are right under the awning.

I noticed a couple of soft floors that threw IMHO the wrong way and wondered why on earth the manufacturer would do it, as you end up face to face with your neighbours in caravans.
We all need a shower and washing every now and then.

My guess would be that Australian designed & built trailers would open to the passenger side, but Chinese built would be to the drivers side.

Why? Australia drives on the left so it makes sense to open on the 'near-side' in Australia, but China drive on the right so theirs open to the 'near-side' in China. I know that they are built for export, but China export to the whole world where they mainly drive on the right.

Austrack to the right. We have not camped where it was a problem (yet). Ours is on a ex-mil workshop trailer which is pretty easy to maneuver around to get it where you want the opening

Cape York Trailer, (CYT) soft floor, opens to passenger side.

Easy to maneuvre too if need be.

Not an issue obviously if keeping away from people by staying out bush:)

I may be misunderstanding something here but what you're saying is that if you've got a passenger side tent then if you pull up on the side of the road & want to get into the trailer for one reason or another, to lift it you'd be standing on the carriageway not the footpath?

i suppose...but i would find somewhere to pull off the side of the road where there is plenty of room......

doubt it.

mine is a 1999 complete campsite built in gosford nsw, opens to the drivers side. only had it in one cp and fitted fine on a site with no concrete pad, as others say generally keep out of parks, otherwise would have bought a jayco. ;)

Caravan parks are setup for passenger side opening, because all caravans and campervans open up to the passenger side.

Our camper opens to the passenger side, but like Yorkie, we don't go to van parks all that often to worry about it and on the rare occasion we do, we are always in a non powered site anyway, so flat grassy area.

My folks bought an off the back Camerons about 20 years ago, this is my preference, so easy to set up, not climbing over each other in bed (good or a bad thing;)), ease of set up. I've had/have 3 camper trailers, 2 soft floor off the side jobby's, 1 hard floor off the back. Although you have less room with the hard floor, its ease of set up is great. Will definately upgrade to a new hard floor in the future with all the bells and whistles:)

Our Trayon folds out to the passenger side. Makes it convenient when you pull up on the side of the road to throw stuff in the back / swap the fridge over from gas to electric, or even change.
