View Full Version : JUST BOUGHT 09 110 UTE

Hi everyone.
Just had to tell someone, so hear goes.
Bought myself an 09 110 single cab ute and drove him back from the Vic border to Terrigal today.
Has B/bar, Winch, Uhf, ABS and T/control and goes like a rocket. (in a straight line).
I'm as pleased as punch with it and the fuel eco is excellent as I chuffed along at 95Ks all the way.
Now I'm 6' 2'' and are slightly disabled so I sort of don't fit, but I have a plan which I would like to discuss with you all.
Extend behind the seats x 4".
I had a good look at the back window section. If I remove this section and push it back 4", then fabricate an infill between this new position and the doors to include the jamb, I will have enough room internally for the seats to go back some.
As for the roof section, I will leave it where it is and again fabricate a flashing to act as a roof infill from under the existing gutter to over the back window section. Of course this will have to be strong enough to support the rear off the roof of the top of the rear window section.
A small but insignificant modification will be made to the rear tub, but again this will not present a problem.
This all sounds well and good, but since having an operation, my fabricating days are over, so can anyone help with this project for which I will pay for, but the main thing is to get the design right first.
Type away you geniuses and let the thought processes flow as this is not a oneday I'll get around to it, but a must do and soon!

Telstra got a few cabs extended back in 2000/2001, so it is definitely possible.

I am 6' 3" and would not fit in a standard cab version!

This is mine, with the extension:

Telstra got the seats moved back about 3" from standard, so good leg room even for tall fellas.

Thanks Spudboy for the quicker than light response and especially for the photos. This gives my idea some balls. Maybe I can fins one of these damaged?

sounds like you got a nice one
extra cabs - there are numerous posts on these - it can be an extension relatively easily done if you do it yourself (the roof is the hard bit)
......& it was also available "ex factory" from about 1994 (I think)
search is your friend - enter "120 extra cab" in advanced search title pane or search on google with the :aulro tag
- try this link also

No worries!

Don't like your chances of finding a wrecked one though. In all my years of surfing around CarSales etc I have only ever seen three of four for sale ever.

From memory, there was someone who did exactly this to their ute, and they published a whole sequence of photos on how they did it. Involved quite a bit of drilling out of rivets from memory.

Try doing a search here and see what you can turn up.

Edit: 87County beat me to it - hopefully his links are the ones I was remembering....

BTW - there are some more photos of my car in various states of dis-repair on this thread:

Thanks to Spudboy and 87County for their very helpful tips and links.
I just love being part of the community. However, all that way from Victoria and I didn't even get the legendary one finger off the steering wheel "on ya mate" as I didn't see another Deefer all day. I'm sure it will come.
Back to reality folks, its great to see this is possible and I had a laugh with comments around LRs bodywork.
My wife is all upset that the landy is going under the knife and she keeps harping on about how I will wreck it and why did you not buy something that you could fit in! Good point but we also have a D3, so what could I do? Got to keep it in the family I told her.
Her response? I hope it doesn't cost as much as the D3 to keep on the road as a 7K gearbox is being fitted as I write.
No love, these are basic beasts that are held together with pop rivets and a prayer. See, folks, I'm already thinking like you mob!
Enough dribble, thanks to all who have and will offer help.
Cheers from gasman

Hi Gasman. My vehicle was, until very recently, just like Spudboy's. The roof seems to have been made by joining two parts of a single cab roof to make it longer. A friend has done something similar to your intentions but he used a SWB roof, cut down to length and this gave him a vertical rear edge to the roof. Looks quite neat. He has not bothered to install the small windows behind the door pillars and doesn't think they are necessary. I don't agree, as they make quite a difference to vision, especially out the passenger side at intersections etc. I am similar in height to you and Spudboy and find the extra legroom etc makes for a very comfortable cabin. I live in the lower Hunter Valley, about half an hour out of Maitland, so if you want to come and have a look at mine , you are welcome. Cheers, 130man.

Thanks 130man I would love to. I have to come up to Cessnock soon, so if you don't mind leaving your details somehow? I will contact you at the given time.
THANKS FOR THE OFFER.

Hi Gasman

Congratulations on the new Puma ute. Sounds like you'e got a fantastic vehicle there! I've had mine 110 truck cab for just a month now and am loving every minute I'm around it.

Like you I'm just over 6'2" and so had been quite concerned about whether I would fit inside. So, also like you I gave passing thought to options for extending the cab and will now be following your progress with great interest.

However, I'm happy to report that I find my own truck cab seating position surprisingly comfy (everybody's different!), and now don't want to change it.

As you know a cab extension can be quite complicated and from what I understand might require some form of engineering certification when you are done. But there is a possible alternative I thought about. What about QT bucket seats? Specially made for truck cab Land Rovers to give taller drivers more leg room. I called these people up in UK and had a chat and they seem pretty genuine. This might not be any help for your situation, but just an idea.

Challenge Seat Package - S1064 - Interior - Defender 130 - Qt Services (http://www.qtservices.co.uk/parts/defender-90/interior-defender-90/challenge-seat-package_challenge-seat-package.html)

Enjoy your Land Rover!

Cheers

Hey thanks Alan for the link. I had a look and will consider it.

IMO what would be ideal, and yes it would require a pro to do the fab, IS get the doors made the etxra length...push the back of the cab etc back and fab the new roof as you would anyway.

Its not just the leg room, but my shoulder rubs and my arm hangs out the window

To do it properly is a big, big job, but it is a lot better !
See mine here, which is now in the final stages!

That still happens in a dual cab where you can get the seat right back except your head now lines right up with the bolt for the seat belt :(

Awesome, Might be worth an email to see if they will make and sell the skin....could be cut down the the length required as I think 10 inch may be a touch to long for most. I know sliding windows not as good as wind up...but

Great idea. I had thought of that also, but its really changing things then.
I guess I will have to do what 110 stationwagon drivers do and lean forward when wanting to see around the b pillar.

Just a follow up - there is someone selling an extra-cab for a Defender in the Wrecking section: http://www.aulro.com/afvb/wrecking-notices/159249-defender-130-td5.html

...I will also have for sale the modified extra cab from an 1984 120 tray back, big new tray with canvas canopy, two front doors (same as county), set of 35" BFG KM2 tyres on 15" rims, and a heap of other stuff also.

PM or phone Andrew 0400 124456

Not sure if it of interest, but it might save you a lot of work.....

Burbs engineering In ringwood did the conversion above
Very nice job as well
He still has all the jigs to make the side panels and roof as well
Has a heap of pics on his site including tanks and killer sliders
Not cheap but he does engineered work including moving the
Upper seat belt anchorage back so it STILL works at restraining you!
