Hi All,
I have a mate with an early 2004 Freelander TD4. The auto box slips in second... Does he need a new box or can this one be rebuilt?
Any help would be appreciated...

These boxes can be rebuilt. You can't get parts through Land Rover for them but aftermarket parts are available.
These boxes are used in various makes of cars eg. VW, Mazda, Jaguar

First check the fluid level and condition.

I had one the other day in the shop that had a flare (slip) on 2nd, noticeable on the up shift from one to two.
This was reduced shift time once warm but still noticeable on a hard acceleration.

I checked the level once cold it was down by about a quart/litre.
Once the level was corrected and road tested the unit shifted normally.
So its worth checking.

Now checking is done by removing the CORRECT plug which blanks off a vertical tube arrangement inside the casing. Remove the wrong plug and you stuff the box, so beware!
Its worth checking the shift time with a scanner to see if a shift solenoid is being lazy, (it happens,) and an overview with an ohm meter doesn't go amiss to check solenoid resistances.
You will find a chart on the specs below in another posting below on this forum.

While you are at it remember don't overlook the fluid condition, especially if it is black or burnt smelling. that's an indication of clutch slip/burn.
