A mate of mine runs a Hilux 5 speed manual diesel and he says that it is geared too high, especially in first gear. Anyone on here who for whatever reason drives one can confirm this in your experience? He says the 6 speed auto is great. I am not sure of the year of manufacture but it is fairly new. Jim

Our 09 hilux (work ute) tends to feel laboured when doing 60 in fourth or 80 in fifth with very little throttle response and the need to kick it back a gear to get going when overtaking etc.
So I can see why he may feel it is geared to tall, IMO it is underfuelling to meet the economy and emissions specs .
My work ute is a 2.5 litre turbo diesel 2011 triton and is a lot worse than the Hilux to drive. Nothing below 2000 rpm making gear changes painful and driving on a wet road bordering on dangerous as the power kicks in like a 2 stroke power band on a dirt bike.
My td5 with a remap and VNT is much nicer to drive than either of them, pulls earlier with power on tap from not much above idle.:)
For late nineties technology the td5 doesn't take to many mods to make it a very drivable 4x4 compared to some of today's smaller capacity CRD's (in factory spec);)
