It's the wiring getting stuck behind the unit. I had a 90 Disco with the same problem - the solution is to have neat wiring bundled together and feed the excess out the side of the console as you insert the radio.( ie where the wiring exits the cavity for the radio)

Tie some string onto the wiring and feed it through your dash. Then as you push in the headie gently pull on the string to get the wiring away from the back of the headie. When finished, trim off the excess string.

I found the rubber stop on the back of my new CD player didn't fit properly in the support hole at the back. That was stopping mine from going in the last inch...

That really gave me the ****s when I was putting mine in, even after it was done on corrugated tracks I'd look across at my head unit vibrating out of the DIN :p

Also I recommend not jamming the pile of wires in without cable management..... I used force and in the process cut the positive power on some metal in the dash and blew a fuse. Whooops!

Well update... the head unit was just too long to fit in, even with cable removed from behind its about 2 inches to long :-(
so im going to put the good head unit in my run around and go find a short head unit, but how to find one? google and ebay are just not doing it for me in there search.
what i ended up doing was putting as bracket around it to secure it and make it look less....untidy, well i F@#@ed up big time i was going 4x4ing and i found a BIG problem, i couldnt shift into low range.... GAH what a pain.

Post a pic - generally there isn't such a thing as a 'short head unit' - it's called DIN for a reason: a standard size (Google DIN for an explanation). If you have a wreckers nearby, try a radio from a old commodore or rodeo. It does fit

That units a ***** to put in at the best of times.
cable and debry managament are important but Ive previously found anther factor
1. is the shroud in correctly some that have damage will stop you from getting a unit in becasue the spacing behind the shrouding changes as the shrouding moves while you push the unit in

The only solution is to use a unit without a cd player.
I have a head unit in mine that I got from Repco that is just a radio, SD card, USB and external input. It puts out a pretty good sound (depends what you are used to) and only cost about $100 on special. The whole unit is about 100-120mm long so fits just about anywhere.

corgie carrier your spot on there is a big difference in head units without cd players (and lets be honest i stopped using cds ages ago usb and BT is the way to go)
any my head unit which wont fit is 190mm deep, i just looked around then and found Alpine Electronics of Australia (http://www.alpine.com.au/showItem.php?item_id=37) which is 155mm deep. that should fit snug!
