Carpet Removal

Hi All,

Somebody has glued carpet to the inside of my 1960 SWB Series 2 roof.

I am assuming that it is for sound insulation - it seems to be a common DIY modification.

I am considering removing it but I am not sure what the best method is?

When I removed the carpet from the floor, I used an old wood chisel and very carefully did a little bit at a time.

But I am worried that the roof is thinner, and that I will damage it.

Any suggestions?

It's got me stuffed why people do this...if they are not drilling holes in the dash or the roof they are sticking stuff to the roof, the floor or under the hood!

Try using a hair dryer or heat gun to melt the glue. It a crappy job but non damaging.

An alternative to the last suggestion is to unbolt the roof and take it off (not difficult at all), invert it so you are working down instead of up, and use a good soaking of min turps to soften the glue and hopefully you will find that it will peel off relatively easily - remaining glue can be cleaned up with thinners/turps.

PS (safety note) don't use turps working overhead - you don't want one drop of the stuff to get in your eye
