I’m running a D1 with a 2” suspension lift. Currently running a set of BF Goodrich AT 225/75/16 and want bigger rubber – mud rubber.
I’m fine with cutting the arches – camel cuts etc and adding flares.
What is the recommendation on best rubber size to run without going to the extreme of body or additional suspension lifts etc? What size can I practically get away with on existing D1 rims? Or am I best to just bite the bullet and get new rims + tires with an offset and if so, what sort off set with what size of tires? I’m conscious not to stuff up my gear ratios to much as I do tow a boat a lot.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Cheers,
Rob

TDI or V8?
I run 245/75/16's on my TDI and I wouldn't go any bigger - especially if you are towing with a TDI.
Also, being in VIC, have you checked what you can legally run without an engineering assessment? Or are you happy to have it certified? Off the top of my head if you have a 2" lift already, you can't add more than another 1" to the ride height with tyres without needing an assessment.

G'day Rob
I've had 255/85 BFG MT on my RRC for many years its got 2" suspension + 2" body lifts and LRA flares with -25 reversed Disco rims. This set up has been great, but I also changed to 4.11 diff ratio when I put in the Maxi Drives years ago. Recently changed to 285/75 KM2s and they seem to be reasonably quiet on the road and great on the dirt. Got them from Tyrepower in Camberwell, Boof is good to deal with
Cheers

So with this in mind...^^^
Max. 245/75/16...
Or look at changing ratios in the diffs... Or a Defender transfer case (which will allow a 235-85-16 with a Camel cut).
Keep in mind wide tyres aren't beneficial over skinnys in mud... Its a cosmetic thing... Tyre pressure and tread elongation are much more important.

I'm running 275/70/16's on my DI and they are to big with out a camel cut, my rear guards are a bit mangled by the tyres bending them up when they hit.
I have a 2" spring lift, but to do it properly it needs a body lift, flares and offset rims. With standard rims you have to wind out the stops so the tyres don't hit the chassis, so I have the turning circle of the titanic. Power wise I have a cammed 4.6 fitted to it so can't really comment about standard engines but to do it properly as other above have said it isn't a cheap exercise.
As for wide or skinny after 32 years of playing in the mud in the top end fat wide and super aggressive if you are in serious gunk. Im not going to get into a wide/skinny argument that is just my experience in the mud in the top end. So just as oils aint just oils same for mud i'm used to black soil mud not clay based which quite possibly skinny tyre is better for i dont know.
Also an oiler is not as good a mud toy as a V8 as it responds to slow to the noise pedal, with mud you need enough revs to throw it off of the tyres so they can keep gripping, but to much to quickly and you dig yourself to china. Mud grips like half a rugby tems grabbing you so when that happens You need full noise instantly. Having said that doesn't mean you can't just that it's not as good.

Hi Blitz
Offset depends where you get them to reweld the center of the wheel. I'm pretty sure you can get -25mm if you push it back in to the max

Cool, I'm not sure I want to go to fully -25 as that would make them illegal AFAIK
