This is one of those "OK I'll bite" questions.

How in the hell does one get the top of the box off to get to the element.

I released two clips the intake hose and the MAF sensor plug. No matter how I fiddled and jiggled I couldn't get the lid out. I didn't try to force anything. Obviously there is a "knack".

As an observation, if it is so difficult "When was the last time you checked that the element was changed at the dealer service?"

Hopefully the dealer apprentices have learned the "knack".

yep, a little bit of force and jiggling - there's not much room in there. Also, be very careful putting it back together - it is easy to 'distort' the box a bit and not get a good seal, so once its together, check thoroughly that it is sealed. Such a pain after the good ol' filter set up in the 300Tdi........

Release the hose from airbox lid to turbo, unclip the MAF wiring, and the 2 retaining clips, pull the lid up as far as it goes and forward across to the LH side of vehicle, moving that stupid A/C pipe out of the way first. Fitting is reversal of removing procedure but as Marty says, ensure the inner edge is located in its bits so as to ensure proper sealing.

Yes it is a pain but you'll get better at it:p

The lid of the box has 2 hooks on the side inside the guard, so you have to tilt it up as far as possible to get the hooks out, then slide it out, give it a jiggle to get it past the (?aircon) hose.. then the fun bit is lining it up to get back in..

Two things

If you remove the black plastic cover on the guard, you can both get your hand in the back of the filter nad also you can see if it has correctly located under the back clips


Else you can lower your air filter - a huge job, but one of our first priorities on the Puma rebuild - see bottom of this page.

And even if you do all that, line up perfectly and it clamps down properly it will still leak air around the lid.:(

The PUMA needs an after market replacement air box - slightly lower and lid that actually seals.

Anybody out there who might like to undertake this project......anybody (crickets)

yes bit of a joke,just like the Td5 airbox lid, I use a smear of rubber grease around the filter 'seal' to seal it better in dusty conditions.
