I am trying to get a couple of spare keys for the Land Rover Tow Hitch 'cut'.

Does anyone know what the 'Key Blank' - make (manufacturer) and serial number is, so the locksmith can match the profile of the key and cut accordingly.

Couls it be the case that only a land rover dealer has the 'blanks'?

Thanks for any input

Cant actually buy key "blanks" as such.
But...
for a small price about $20 or so, you can buy a whole handle assembly that can be removed in about 10mins.
It comes with 2 new keys.

I believe I have misinterpreted your post ... but could you be saying, for the price of 2 x Keys cut you can get the whole assembly (the green section of the tow Hitch) ready to remove the old one and install ?

I can't see how the removal would be undertaken. Would it be necessary to have a special tool to complete this process.

Any assistance appreciated.

Hi Steve, I took my only key to the local Locksmith and after a couple of attempts, he was able to match and cut a spare key that actually works. The 'make' is only shown as an 'S' or it could be a 'Z', inside a Square with 'LW14' on the opposite side. It only cost the same as normal key cutting. Hope this helps.

Cheers....

Coolum,
Yes from a dealer is the only place you can get a new handle/key set & again yes it is only the green handle section.

All you need is a punch & a hammer.

Many thanks to both sniegy and GdayMate for your help.

I have ordered key blanks to get cut at this stage, but its great to know the part can be sourced at such a reasonable price.

I recently purchased a D3 which didn't come with a key for the OEM hitch. As this presented a BIG problem when it came to accessing the spare tyre, I took it to a local locksmith with the view to having the lock picked or a new key cut to the serial number embossed on the lock. Sadly, after much picking and keyboarding, no success. Booked the vehicle in for a day's concerted lock picking as I just wanted to ditch the hitch.

In the meantime, I contacted the LR dealer parts and bought a new lock barrel for $38.00 including two keys. As the new barrel had the same serial number, thought I'd try my luck with one of the new keys in my hitch lock, and lo and behold, it fitted. This proved a much cheaper alternative to the locksmith as he quoted a day's labour and around $100 to remove the hitch.

Appears that the keys might be standard (unless I struck it lucky and bought the same key in a limited range)...

Cheers

My perfectly clean and unblemished key jammed in the lock while the car was still under warranty and when I pulled hard just with my fingers to try and remove it the whole key tore off in the lock. The $$&?!'s at LRA as usual refused to help me out they first of all said I must have had mud in the lock, (not) then they said that because it was an accessory it wasn't covered by the full vehicle warranty and refused to do anything about it and they made me pay the dealer $80 to remove it and replace the lock and keys.

I may have mentioned it before but I hate LRA:twisted:

I now don't have a warranty and have a Mitch hitch.

Lost my keys so had to source some more.
Go to Thule Keys - Replacement Keys (http://www.replacementkeys.co.uk/land-rover-tow-bar-keys.html) and give them the serial number on the lock and they will post 2 replacement keys. Cost $18 including postage and I had them in a week.

By the way, every tow hitch lock that I have seen has the same serial number.
