Has anyone bought count rear brake drum adjusters (new snail cams) as I'm having problems fitting mine.

The adjusters have a hex head screw that holds the snail cam to the shaft but the hex head fouls on the body of the brake shoe. Very frustrating trying to figure out what the correct combination of bolt, washer spring, spacer etc as there are no instructions included with these kits.

I had to make the one I fitted work as the original snail cam was stuffed so I ground down the hex head.

Has anyone fitted these who can let me know how they are supposed to go??

Here's a URL with a pic but I didn't get them from here. They came from the UK

I've fitted the same a few years ago. Mine came with instructions but would not fit if you followed them, so no great loss you not having any.

I think the screw you are talking about is used to press the snail onto another part, not just hold it there. If that makes sense?

I think it only presses over one of the parts and not the other.

One thing I do remember is I had lots of bits left over.

Thanks Kelvo,

I thought about the screw just being there to push the cam onto the splined spigot, but it didn't look secure enough.

I also found that the spring under the bolt head (the one you put a spanner on to adjust the brakes) isn't fully compressed like the original so the bolt can move off-axis a bit when you push it.

It all just didn't look right to me. It would be good if someone had a pic of how they are supposed to be fitted.

The kit that I used had two types of assembly with different cams/bolts/washers etc and no instructions. One set were blackened the other chromed.
Does your kit just have one type or two?

Yes Mark. My kit had two types. The black ones are bigger to enable you to get worn shoes closer to the drum. I assumed you chose whichever needed based on the amount of wear you had.

The brake 'snail' kit suits all different LR backing plates, the dif colours (silver & black are for series 11 and 111 (or vice versa) respectively)... Mix and match.. till you find a good combo, it does'nt matter! Even tho the small bolts are to press the snail onto the post, I have always left them on for safety, sometimes they do need grinding down a wee.
