Hello all
After finding a stuffed wheel bearing on my Defender i rang around Canberra to find a new set of bearings. Being a Saturday morning on a ACT long weekend i had no luck with the bearing supplies so i rang the local LR dealer who informed me that the cost for the two bearing sets would be just over $700.00 and are not kept as stock:(. I have now ordered a set through Ebay for $50.00 per wheel.:)
Do you think the dealer made a mistake or thats the way it is ???

Must be a mistake.
I last paid $20 per bearing I think. So maybe $40 per wheel plus seal.
That was Timken from a bearing shop.
Seals were from an independent LR parts supplier.

No that would most likely what LR would charge.

I recently replace the vacuumed pump, genuine LR here in Aus $575.00,

From UK €90 ($120 AUD's) with freight to the door $147.00

If you want genuine bits or otherwise, always check out the major UK suppliers (Paddocks, Brit Car are a couple) you will save heaps. Freight is normally only 5 to 7 days.

Cheers

Last time I got Timken wheel bearings I think they were about $20 each and the RTC3511 seal about $9 ...
If you are interested I'll have a look in the morning, and check stock.

Just checked the quote, bearings $150 each, seal $40.00, locking tab and gasket $22.00
= $366 per side
= $720 / axle
= $1440 front and back

Hi,

Why does it always happen on a Saturday????

When this happened to me, I could get the bearings for a reasonable price - "convenience" mark up, but the seal was not available anywhere in Canberra on a Saturday afternoon, for any price.

I now have a few seals on hand, of the genuine double lip variety $16.50 each IIRC.

For bearings, a sort of bearing supplies place may only charge about $50.00 for an after hours call out. Expensive enough to deter the single 6308 purchase, but cheap enough to keep industrial customers.

I used the service once when the boat trailer was sitting beside the road with a failed bearing one night, got three (both sides and one for a spare), and it worked out at about an extra $16.50 per bearing....... Cheap at twice the price, in fact, priceless....

I. Have the seals in bulk I may have bearings but they rarely fail the seals from land rover are just stupidly priced Re use the lock washer and never use the gaskets
