Hi all,

I just got back from an 8000k trip round the red centre and back across the Simpson.

I had the 100,000k service done at 93,000k on my 2009 Defender just before I left, as well as a pre inspection report done prior to going into land rover for the service, now I am back it will probably be another 6 months before I do the next 2k.

Is there anything that should be done before that time? i.e. oil change and are there parts that should be inspected for wear after long hard going trips?

Also does anyone know how to clean out the aircon/ vent system? every morning I am getting a mouthful of dust out the vents, this has been going on for 2 weeks now since I got back, and does not seem to be letting up, I would hazard a guess at one of the things I should do is change the air filter considering that there is that much dust coming out the heater vents the air intake for the engine must be in a similar state also.

thanks
Patrick

An extra oil & filter change wouldn't do any harm.

Check the level & condition of the gearbox & diff oils. Re-grease the prop (if you have a grease point on yours), check/change the air filter and a visual inspection of everything else.

were you on your own or travelling in company,
if you were eating dust, and it sounds like you were from the A/C
I'd be changing the air filter element at least.
and grease the propshafts.

We had 2 cars, 3 people in our car, kept the AC on all the time as it was nearly 50deg on a couple of days, but kept it on recirculate, you just can't stop the dust getting in!!

I think there may be something dead under my bonnet also, the smell is horrendous in the car but could also be caused by the loss of 40l of water in the back and the carnage in the fridge, I will be getting metal jerry cans for water in future the plastic ones just split at the seams, or get a large steel one made to fit somewhere. That said the new camper trailers on Mulgo's news letter look good, and I don't feel the need to cross the Simpson again any time soon so a trailer could be the answer to that particular problem.

thanks for the points to check.

For water containers, try some of the British army ones. 25L and they can take some serious abuse!!!

Personally, I use a combination of the army ones and a fixed 40L tank, in the foot well, behind the cubby box.
