Folks
Let no one say that AULRO shies away from the tough issues of Land Rover ownership! So I set before you for your consideration the question of 'Defender hair'.
Being a tall fella I normally drive my truckcab Puma with the window down, allowing the parts of my body which don't fit inside to spill out of the cab.
Just recently on a couple of occasions I've had reason to drive to work separately from the Minister for War, taking the Puma. So out of shower, dressed, drive to work and into the office -with hair that was last in fashion in the Fuhrer Bunker circa 1945!
In some unenlightened circles Defender owners are thought to be 'uncool' and to be honest 'Defender hair' doesn't help much. The Puma aircon works great and the boss sometimes demands its use, but frankly I prefer driving with an open window.
So with -tongue firmly in cheek- have other people experienced this issue and what can be done? What if you drive with open both windows open - do you get some kind of widows peak? -Possibly preferable to a follicular subscription to the 1000 year Reich.
Oh, and those silly window slipstream deflecter things - no thanks
Cheers
Alan

Isnt a funny hat part of Defender ownership along with a beard?
Being somewhat follicularly challenged these days, the aerodynamic attributes of my cranium have contributed to smoother airflow throughout the cabin and achieved a fuel consumption reduction.
The thought of "How is my hair?" is probably more like 'where is my hair?
However with Mrs Strangy, the hair question is very important.
Explaining that a Defender is an icon not a fashion statement therfore many iconic attributes are passed to the occupants, hasnt helped.
I thought I was onto something after a further suggestion that, I loved watching her hair blow in the breeze, was met with amazement until disbelief set in.
Thinking maybe she could have one of those plexi glass capsules the Cabbies and Bus drivers have.....

That is why in more enlightened times, Defenders had front vents. With the window open just a little to avoid disturbing your carefully coiffured hair, those vents provided enough ventilation.
Ah! for the good old days when Defender drivers could arrive at work as immaculately coiffured as when we left home. :D
Rumour has it that the front vents were fitted for that express purpose. :D

I don't drive a Defender (yet, my next one will be :) )
BUT.
I'm constantly getting my hair messed up as I stick my head out the window to try and hear if my front prop shaft is chirping :D :D :D

When I read 'Defender Hair' it makes me think of hair which is matted, knotted and dirty with bits of grease in it. Not a fashion statement, just gets this way from laying under it on the trolly fixing things. :p

Hey some of us Defender drivers are girls and I aint shaving my scon :o
Ha ha I thought it was just me that jumped out of the truck with a hairdo reminding me of my Dad's comb over :D and no you can't wear a hat because then you get hat hair and that is even worse.
And no, definately don't open both windows  when you find the solution let me know because I always have my window down, how else can I do the wave :p

If you wind your drivers side passenger window down a bit, the blowbacks not as severe.
The Minister of Finance has really long hair, and when all the windows are in the right positions, her hair gets in my face :o. There ain't no way she'll be cutting hers off :D

I'm afraid we have the perspex window deflector-thingies... but I love them - you can drive in the rain and still have the windows down, so as to not block out the droning of the 35" MTZ muddies.
The added benefit is that you're not getting wet by the rain falling through the window, which lets you concentrate on just where, exactly, that next leak onto your foot/leg/crotch/shoulder is coming from...

Front vents open, drivers window up, back drivers window down a bit. perfect airflow. Arrive at work perfectly groomed, even though I often work in a paddock.

well can I just say defender hair is not just an affliction placed upon a defender driver..
Please people I beg you to consider your defender passenger!!!
when Ian drives the 90 he puts down the window just a smidge because it doesnt have aircon.
however he has short hair so it doest really affect him...but let me bring your attention to the fitting of our doors on the 90. they are not great and due to these superb fitting doors even if he has only cracked the window a fraction on the drivers side it appears to suck the air through my door on the passenger side! predisposing me to defender hair!
so defender drivers with gaps in the doors (which I would imagine would be well errrrm pretty much everyone) THINK OF YOUR PASSENGERS!:D
and I'm not shaving my melon either!!!!

I was thinking of getting the persplex window thingies, I had them on another vehicle. But I still can recall the pain when you shove your head out the window and they take a big chunk out of your skull, it hurts for ages after  especially when you brush your hair

TD5 and back utes and CC's have this one licked.
Vents open, rear window/s open.
Voila ! heaps of air and nothing out of place.
Of course, mostly I have the drivers window down just so I can fit in, and up until four weeks ago had long hair..... (yeah, I'm a hippy :p)
Now fixed with a #3 all over :D (and I'm still a hippy :p)

brillcream, keeps hair undercontrol and water proof, will also shine a bald head and make any water bead making it easier to shammy off (a jar in the car) also helps to quiet down squeeks in doors if desperate and makes rubber hoses look shiney and new, maybe it should be called series 3 cream????

My wife always has the window open. She got her hair permed so it always looks ratty, having the window open dries her hair on way to work and makes it look like its supposed to look.

In the Kimberley a mate driving his 110 tray back used to pull into camp grey on the inside half of his head and ginger on the door side. The whole look was exacerbated coz he had mutton chop sidies. His poor wife had similar issues but since her hair wasn't grey to begin with it was easy to pretend it wasn't there.

My Deafener is only 13 years old, and hasn't developed its hair yet.
I'm a little worried about where it grows though, might be alot harder to get the mud off.

I have a solution I have made a prototype out of 1.2 mm ally .
Just finishing up the drawing so I can get some made from 2.00mm tinted poly carbonate.
Easy to attach with dbl sided tape. I have had mine on for 2 weeks now and it doesn’t hang down off the window so you dont' scalp yourself when sticking your nogen out
With the window half up no wind at all, with the window all the way down and elbow out there is a nice soft breeze , even up to 100kph
No defender hair here.
Also stops the wind lifting the door seal at high speed

I get defender hair and sun burn too. I had a bird years ago with hair down past her arse so I would open the split rear windows on warm days and it would get sucked out the back of the cab

Dsico drivers don't suffer the Hair due to air-conditioning that works..
however they do suffer repetitive strain injury of the left arm and also sometimes suffer symptoms of over exposure to caffeine. from lifting those latte's:)

yeah but defender arms are far stronger due to the manoeuvring of the man stick when pressing the clutch.
most disco's are auto so drivers are genetically weaker hahahahah:D
and dont even get me started on the defender drivers ill matched legs.....

Does this count as Defender Hair.
I'm assured by my 8 y/o daughter that this is indeed a female Defender as she has eyelashes.

And the world gets smaller.. because I don't suppose you were in a white 110 (at least I think that's what it was) with a round snorkel??.. I drove around that way on my way home (was working at the show).. and spotted the Defender next to the D2..
PS the 'Tweetie' yellow D2 is hubby's.. he bought it recently and is trying cover the yellow with accessories... the pin striping and stickers are new as are the rock sliders and the new tyres he had fitted today.. apparently a company had painted the car in it's colours and when a friend was selling it we thought the car was just in too good condition to pass up despite the colour.. :)

Yes that was my 110. My mate was nearby in his 130 too.
He commented on the colour of tweetie (in a positive sense - he actually likeds it). We thought it may have belonged to CAA in a previous life, but the mystery is now solved.
The interior is interestingly kitted out too.

Yeah I believe the interior has been replaced with a 2005 model interior.. but those red gear stick sleeves have GOT to go lol... hubby doesn't seem to notice it so much but I always feel the need to put on sunglasses when I glance towards 'Tweetie'.. ;) I didn't see the 130.. not like me to miss a Defender! :)
