Its that time of the year again when the yellow belly's come out of hiding. I'm heading up to Eildon for 3 days of fun, I'll post up a trip report if we're successful. :)

That's a good sized yellowbelly Aussie. Bet he put up a bit of a fight!. I used to catch a few in the Condamine River in SE Qld when I was a youngster and they mostly were around 5-6 pounds and occasionally one a bit bigger.

Eildon is fishing great at the moment. Came back last nite and took 20 good size redfin, 2 x 3pnd browns and a 6 pnd yellow, along with 4 x big carp all over 4 pnds. Fish at all different depths, water temp has come up 3-4 degrees in a week so the yellows are out and about.

They sure are, me and my buddy had a drunkin fryup of all the reddies, they are one the best eating fish around. Had a few cut fingers the next day after filleting them all..lol,
note to self: Dont fillet fish while drunk

The little yellow, such an elusive critter in the winter months. My tips for catching them, fish in 4-6 meters of water, always target rocket embankments and keep smashing the same spot over and over. oh and water temp needs to be above 16 for them to start getting active, I went through prob 30 lure changes before I found the one they liked then they were all caught on that one lure. :)

Could not agree more. I went to Windermere Dam a few years ago and when the others I was fishing with stopped casting to a likely spot I kept putting casts in and I was the one getting the fish. All on the same green lure I bought for $1 from one of those disposal bins from the tackle shop.
They all laughed when I got it stuck on a submerged tree branch but I took the boat over and could see it about 2.5 metres down stuck on a branch and decided it was too good a lure to leave there so off with the clothes and over I went. That water was bloodly cold but I got the branch it was stuck on and broke it off and surfaced to find another six lures stuck on the same branch.
Caught six more fish that day on that same lure and the others got zip.
When you find what they like, stick to it. By the way the next day they would not even look at that lure. A dark brown lure was all they wanted and the weather and water temp was exactly the same.
