View Full Version : Frustrated by New Cruise Control!

Very frustrated at the moment. I bought a Cruise control Kit from a UK supplier who apprently worked for the company.
The kit comprises a couple of lengths of wire, some pin connectors & seals + a switch.
Most importantly it comes with a great set of instructions.
Problem for me was I had no time so I paid Complete Car Sound in Enoggera to fit it up expecting a couple of hours labour.
End result $325.00 in labour & the following statement-" it all went together really well & the instructions were really easy to follow, but nothing happens when you press the switch"
I now have a really expensive switch on the steering column & not much else!
I am contacting the maker as we speak but I am wondering if the ABS light coming on the dash means somewhere I have a leak or fault that might cause this to fault.
Does anyone in Brissy have a diagnosis unit to read the fault codes without charging me a million bucks to try & sort out if I am even in the right ballpark?
The ABS & TC lights have been there for a while but don't seem to have affected the brake performance.
It is a 1999 TD5 110 Extreme.
Thanks in advance!

I have a puma and the ABS and TC lights came on which was the result of a crushed ABS sensor cable which happened when I had the airbags fitted. There maybe something that prevents the cruise control from coming on if there is a fault.

Not sure about the TD5 however.

Have you made any changes to your TC gearing?

Cruise controls for the TD5, using the ECU to input speed, don't work with the 1.222 gear set (disco) in the defender, when in 5th (but do work when in 4th).

Try turning it on when in 4th ;)

The only one that claims to work with the modified gearset is from Mobilecentre (http://www.mobilecentre.co.uk/index.php'main_page=product_info&cPath=36_225&products_id=644) - or is this the one you're referring too?!

Apparantly its only for 2002 onwards ECU's

have you had the clutch switch disabled, ?
if youv'e removed the clutch switch try shorting the switch wires together.

the cruise wont engage if it thinks your foots on the clutch pedal.

I think you could have got the instructions for free, have a look here for some tips,

It wont work on the earlier ECU only the NNN ECUs to my understanding.

I'm pretty sure cruise doesn't work with the 3 amigos on, well i think it didn't last time we had them, but thats a td5 2001 manual Disco

I have no affiliation with them, but I had one on my Patrol. I will be buying the Aussie made on. 280000 on the Patrol and it worked perfectly. They on;y have a limited number of authorised fitters.

I've recently fitted one to a 2004 TD5, switch came of a Disco 1. I was under the impression it doesn't work on pre 2002 Defenders unless you change the ECU??
Mine worked fine but I have noticed that it won't 'engage' unless your foot is still pressing the accelerator, easy enough to do once you get used to it, just accelerate to the speed you want then hit engage before you stop accelerating, then it works perfect, clutch/brake pedals disengage and resume will, well 'resume'. It also accelerates and decelerates off the switches as well.

Now all I need is it to clear customs so I can get it back, haven't seen her since the end of August :( , hope she enjoyed the cruise!

Yeah the frustration comes from the fact that my TD5 was the demo one for the Brisbane LR dealers & the ECU has no numbers on it at all!
I gather due to it being a 1999/2000 it will be the earlier type.

Hey Mate
I have a MY 2000 130. MR automotive fitted a cruise control to mine and it works brilliantly. Maybe if you asked Jason he may have some answers for you.
