The A/C in my 95 HSE seems to work fine, but on very hot days I've noticed that it is not very good. Was under the hood today with the engine running and A/C turned on and noticed that the clutch on the A/C compressor constantly starts and stops every few seconds. Is this normal, or does it have a problem? Cheers.

Sounds like you might need a re-gas!

There is a pressure switch in the gas line, it will operate on high pressure or low and turn the pump off.
Could be a blockage causing a high pressure shut down, then as it drops the compressor kicks in again.
you might be able to work it out with a voltmeter on that switch, usually near the Dryer??-Filter looking thing with the sight glass in the top.

It's really worth giving the Air Con a "Refresh" with a New Receiver/Drier and Expansion/Evaporator Valve. I did this to my 95 HSE and regassed the system and temperature at vents can be as low as 3 degrees...

Only cost around $100 AUD in Parts... and $150 with the Air Con guys...

mine's buggered also, plus the two hoses are cracked with the A/C oil leaking out.

Question: Where's a good Aircon speacialist in the south eastern part of Melbourne?

Haven't used one, but ring AMV in Ringwood (03 9870 9904) for guidance on someone decent for P38's. Tell them you got their name from AULRO people. They know word travels fast here!

How's the clutch air gap?
If it's excessive, the clutch might not be able to stay engaged for long.

There's also a mod to fix the voltage drop at the clutch too.

Have a look here for some more info:

I took the clutch plate off today to try removing the shim. Looks like the previous owner had already removed and had filed the inner ring. The air gap from the compressor to the clutch plate seems quite wide, I used my feeler gauge but it only goes up to .635 mm and the air gap is quite a bit wider. Im not quite sure what my next step would be. Any suggestions? Cheers.

Sounds like mine. I ended up machining (grinding) the boss down. Ron posted some pictures when he did his.

My PC is too slow at home to do a search at the moment but search in this section for 'clutch' & it will be in there somewhere.

Thank you Scouse, found the post here (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/p38a-range-rover/84402-p38a-aircon-compressor-clutch-2.html)

Will give it a shot. Thanks again.
