View Full Version : How Come There Are No Side Rails to Go With the Winch Bumpers?

Hi All!
This got me curious, how come there are now side rails and steps available from ARB even if they do have the winch bumper? TJM had them for the older models but I noticed that they no longer have them for the newer models?
The reason I ask is that my side rails have saved me multiple times from either obstacles that won't get out of the way or morons behind the wheel. Since this will be my new daily driver, I'd like to have the peace of mind that the sides are protected as well.
Hope someone can clear things up.

What about the type that bolts on to the winch bumper and protects the front fenders that also have side steps?

My '97 130 has brush bars/side steps which are connected to the ARB winch bar with a standard Downee fixed T joiner. I've seen many done this way.

Talk to TJM, they have some available for pumas. They quoted me $893 + $176 fitting. Can't say anything more, I havent committed to them yet.

TJM definitely can supply / fit the brushbar and step combo for the PUMA. I've not long got mine fitted (approx $1150 in Mt Isa).
Something that may affect whether they can be fitted is airbags - do the 90 / 110s have these yet? As I know that the presence of airbags prevented me from fitting brushbars on my previous 4wd.

Well, since Defenders don't have air bags, I reckon they should work then.
Out of curiosity, just how strong are the factory bumpers?
In the event I do go the ARB / TJM route, what are the rear bar options?

Grover69 is a forum supporter and he makes them custom.

The problem with a lot of the scrub bars is the side steps they attach to are too low and can not hold the weight of the defender. This means that they get a beating when / if they strike the ground.
I'm sure that greg (grover69) can make some just the way you want them :)

Thanks flagg!
Something to think about and look into. :)

For those running the TJM bars, how are they durability wise? ARB has proven itself to me regarding the winch bar and side rails and steps on my HiLux but I have no working experience with TJM yet.
Do they also impede the approach angle like the ARB bars did and for the current design, still slightly do?
If TJM checks out, I'll probably go with them over ARB with the Deefer.
Thanks.

Mine came with TJM side bars/steps and a Land Rover (ARB ) bar, so they will work together too.
I've since removed the scrub bar/steps as I'm making my own sliders/steps, but they have kept a few roos out of the guards when I lived in roo central.

Thank you for the feedback rick130! Thinking about getting them.

Are there any rear bars to protect the behind?
