After all the rumours, the iPad mini has finally been announced, and it looks like it could be the best suited iPad for gps navigation.

I have an old iPad Gen1 which I'd purchased with the intention of using for GPS but find I'm still using a 6" chinese gps because the size of the iPad in an otter box case is just too intrusive in the D2 cabin.

While at 7.9" it is still fairly large compared with a 7" table, the reduced foot print should make it more straight forward to mount. The pricing is pretty competitive too, with the base wifi+cellular model roughly the same price as the equivalent iPad2.

Should be interesting to see how it goes.

I agree, the current ones seem a little too big to be practical in the car. The new mini might be a winner for that!

I've been thinking about this since rumors started about the mini. Might be the perfect size for navigation (as Judo points out, the full size iPad is somewhat imposing on the dash), but I'll have to ponder the smaller screen size for the other tasks I use the iPad for such as emails, reading PDFs (eg Puma Manual) and Magazines. eBooks should be fine though.

Resolution is better than my current iPad2 (132 ppi), but it's a pity that the mini (163 ppi) doesn't have a retina display (264 ppi). I think the ultimate iPad for the dash would be a full size iPad but without the bezel.

BTW, I was probably on the only iPad user on the planet who didn't know this, but I recently found out that I can pair an Apple wireless keyboard with the iPad. Much better for typing emails...
