Hi

Firstly, I hope this post is in the right place, sorry if not.

I have just purchased a Howling Moon 1.6 Tourer RTT and looking to get some advice on the pros and cons of my options for roof racks.

I picked up 3 x Rhino Heavy Duty feet and bars to fit the tent to my Defender 110 but I'm looking at using the whole roof space to be able to carry another OzTrail Tourer Tent and a few chairs, sleeping bags etc.

As far as I can tell I have 2 options here that are both pretty much the same cost;

1. Keep the RTT on the bars at the rear of the Defender and add a Steel ARB 1.1m roof rack to the front of the roof.

2. Buy an additional set of Rhino Feet and go for a full length Pioneer platform.

Are there any pros and cons over using a RTT on bars as opposed to a platform?

I have read that an Alloy rack may be more difficult to repair in the bush and that it may be more susceptable to fatigue cracks so I'm leaning toward the Steel rack up front and the tent on Bars but as I've never used a RTT I'd be interested to know if there is any negative points to consider around this setup.

Also, has anyone had any real experience with the Rhino pioneer platform rack, I have not found too many reviews online and would be interested to hear if it is as good as the glossy brochure would have you believe :)

Appreciate your feedback.

For most people my set-up is probably way over the top but we decided to go 2-in-1 with safety and carrying capacity with a full roll cage..... :D

The advantage of the cage for carrying loads is that the weight is distributed through the cage and to the chassis - so there is no problem with possible fatigue cracks etc.

The disadvantages are that the cage weighs quite a bit and some people would think it is ugly! :eek: ;)
