Finished what I had to do , so decided to google maxi-drive to check out their products [ MR AUTO. have taken over the license] and clicked on "Images for maxidrive". In there there is a photo of a defender 130, with both axles steerable. I've never seen anything like it. Bob

Mal Story, Key 4WD , maxi drive inventor made a 4 wheel steering Rangie /Landy hybrid in the late 70's early 80's ?? ( long time ago anyway)

Others here might know more about it. I'm pretty sure Mal had it at Cooma 40th where I met him and he must have been similarly impressed with my Hybrid as after the meeting he let me install his Maxi Drives for LROCV members.

The MD rear-steer setup uses 101FC CV joints, custom/billet swivels (4140 I think), and hydraulic steering which is locked out in high range/road use. Able to be fully approved in all states.

Cost for complete axle was $20k though last I heard!!!

That is just mind boggling, to me. Is it effective, or just a new toy?, Bob

Extremely effective offroad. Because the rear steer is hydraulic and independent of the front steering, you can either use it to turn tighter on a track, or drive the whole car sideways. I have vids of Mal's sidewinder in action, and the rear steer really helps. (on VHS - so these will have to do for now...)

actually Mal's first rear steer was done on a Series I 80 inch. Then as he changed vehicles he added it to them.

His own vehicle known as 'Rova' AKA 'sidewinder' was built by him on a one off custom chassis made from different RHS, CHS. The body is completely hand made by him. It ran ENV diffs, but now runs rover type diffs and as Ben said, 101cvs in the rear and his own made custom swivel balls to fit them. Original engine was 253 holden V8 with a c4 auto and his own made 3 speed transfer case. Now it runs a rover 3.9 on carbs, Lt85 modded by him and a R380 with his 49% low range gearset. Tyres have always been 750-16

it is 100inch wheel base. Roof is strong enough to walf all over with zero effect, same with the bonnet. The roof comes off easily and windscreen folds down. It has long doors, with wind down windows AND removeable door tops.

The 130 you are seeing pictures of are Patrice's. He is/was the owner of Outback Imports in France. Mal did that 130 here and Patrice took it back with him. Mal has also made rearsteer versions of his Portal axles....

Mal had rear steer and cutting brakes before some of us were born. He has tried, done and broken more than some of us combined, when it comes to LR's. Much more than many will know.
