View Full Version : blinker/flasher-like noise td5 defender HELP!

In a td5 90, a directional-like noise comes on periodically. It is driving me crazy!
The noise is roughly the same speed as the directional, but there are no indicator lights coming on the dash.
It has come on when the headlights were turned on, but I believe it has also come on when going to high-beam and am fairly sure it has come on with no headlights at all.
When it goes on, it doesn't turn off when the truck is shut off. The ignition needs to be powered on again for the noise to go off.
When the directional is actually on, the noise does not go at the same pace...but the speed is pretty much the same from what I can tell.
I am not sure this is relevant, but it has an aftermarket alarm which kills the ignition until disarmed.
I would appreciate greatly any help as I don't know where to begin.

Yep, Had the same thing in my '96 TDi trayback. Was definitely the flasher unit ticking away. would do it while driving, standing, ign on, ign off, sometimes I would walk past it in the shed and it would be ticking away ;)But no lights going. Changed units, checked wiring ,nothing :-/ Then it stopped as suddenly as it appeared and has not resurfaced!
However I noticed the other day that the indicators will not turn off with the ign . and if I start the hazards for any reason they play silly buggers so have come to the conclusion it is an earthing prob or a short in the indicator switch on the column. Just havent had the time or inclination to delve deeper

I'm hoping a relay solves it!

The flasher can is right behind the dash and gauges. My ticking was coming on periodically when I use a FM transmitting ipod dock. Later it just started clicking continuously and flashing the trailer warning light on the dash. Checked all relays/fuses in front of the gear stick, checked and cleaned all relays and fuses under drivers seat. Pulled the whole dash apart and changed the flasher can but nothing got rid of it. It lasted nearly 12 mths!
I actually think it was an oil in the loom induced fault because after reading here about how TD5s are common in drawing engine oil from the injector loom then down the vehicle wiring towards the ECU under the drivers seat. So I treated the wiring (takes a day). I did notice the ticking slowly went away.

Located the sound...it is the factory alarm ecu which is mounted behind the instrument panel.
The sound was coming on mainly when I turned the lights on but I couldn't get it off until I turned the ignition on and off again.
I no longer use the alarm and have an aftermarket unit. This was the basic unit not with remote fobs. I'm wondering if I can simply unplug the 10as...anyone with experience with the clicking noise in these units? Is it a relay inside the unit?
If I find another one on ebay can I simply swap them?
Also, this may be very important, I was having a problem starting but had narrowed it down to a bad ignition switch. It has been working fine since yesterday. The fuel pump was kicking in, so I do not think it was the 10as (with the immobiliser engaged the fuel pump shouldn't kick in).
Could this all be related? Does the starter run through the 10as?

disregard above thread, apparently need a new ecu and green alarm ecu. Sorry for the lousy question!
