More confusion about towing weights

After all the reseach on towing weights for my RRS td6 being able to tow 3500kg etc i now find on page 291 of the hand book that the off road tow weight is only 1000kg WTF :eek: . Am i reading this right or is their some other deal for Australia Only, like the 350kg ball weight issue when the book says 250kg ???. Or 150kg if the GVW is reached .

At 1000kg off road tow weight i may as well sell my off road camper and by a tent if the book is correct , or buy a tojo :wasntme: . :confused:

But I take it as low range offroad when the going gets tough. You won't be able to tow 3.5 tonne then anyway.

I have towed 2.5 tonne offroad in rutted tracks and moderate washouts in low range. Nothing severe enough to cause concern, and just took it easy.

Offroad is not 'off bitumen road'... It means full blown offroad terrain.

And yes, all manufacturers down rate their vehicles offroad

Manufacturer rating not legal and not a real linit. They do it to stop idiots claiming the vehicle wouldn't tow their 3.5T van up a 45 degree rutted track.

This sounds reasonable to me , i would not tow 3.5 tonne on road anyway as it too heavy for me but did not want to be hog tied to 1000kg off road , my camper weighs 995kg MT. looks like a bit common sence is the right approach . Thanks Al.

I wouldn't be to stressed about your Rangie not coping with towing anything bigger than a 1 ton off road camper. We tow our 2.5 ton off road van to some pretty rugged places considering it is a 18' dual axle van.

So far the only thing that stops me going some places is not knowing if I can turn around if we get to a spot where we can no longer move forward.

'Offroad' in that context means when you'd need low range.

It does not mean dirt roads.

All vehicles, no matter what size they are, have an offroad tow limit of 30-50% of the onroad limit.

And all vehicles have reduced TBM when at GVM. This means you can either load the vehicle to its maximum weight, or tow the maximum capacity. Choose one.

Land Rover are to be commended for being clear on this. Not all manufacutrers are, but all are the same.
