View Full Version : Service - disappointed....again

Aside from the outrageous cost for a standard 2 year service with less than 35K on it I was seriously disappointed with the land rover guidance on wheel rotating. I specifically asked for a wheel rotate and balance and came away learning that LR specs only recommend swapping axle to axle, NOT front to rear.

I have a new set of AT's and I want to get max life out them as I know that the front wears more. It has too, there are heaps of roundabouts here. Even the tread measurements show a 2mm difference front to rear!!! But they wouldn't do it!! so now I have to go to Beaus or another and get them swapped.

And how much did it cost....way too much

Why don't you just rotate them yourself?!

Swapping axle to axle is front to rear, I call it steers to rears,

or did you mean its just been swapped left to right?

Read the manual -

Tyre rotation - Front to Rear / Rear to Front...

Do NOT swap rotational direction (eg. Swap sides of vehicle)

I rotated mine on my D3 (120000k) and D4 (now 60000k) and never had a problem.. My dealer told me to rotate diagonally, but often they are wrong in what they say!
So if you go rear to steer where dose the spare come into it?

Those who fit single rear wheel carriers are in a spot of bother come puncture time.

Good point; I hadn't considered that. :D

Front to rear rotations are better than no rotation, but if your tyres are not directional i always do it in a way so each tyre ends up in a different place on the vehicle each time,so after 4 rotates each wheel has been on a different spot on the vehicle.

Not using the spare,i cross the rears over left to right(easy to do if you have a trolly jack) & then swap front to rear(trolly jack & vehicle jack).

If we do just front to rear, same as axle to axle,(at every10k) on our work vans we get at least 10k less out of each set of tyres than if we rotate them so each wheel ends up in a different place each time, not back in the same place every second rotate.
Done this for a long time & never had any issues.

Trying to get a dealer to do this is almost impossible, they seem to think front to rear is good enough, but for some vehicles it is not.

Two Spares are good for me.

Spares onto the Rear, Rears on the Front and Crossed and Fronts to Spare every 5000km

Hopefully yielding even wear over all six tyres over their life

So what is the best way to maximise tyre life?? How many of you actually rotate with the spare?
I have just had a wheel alignment done on my D4 due to excessive wear on the front outside edges.

I include the spare in my rotation. Spare to front left, front left to rear right, rear right to front right, front right to rear left, rear left to spare.
I like to replace all my tyres at once, that way no matter what I buy the will all be the same and no issues if I need to use the spare.

My D4 definately wears the fronts first and pretty evenly too. I was going to get another wheel but I've had trouble finding a second hand one. I was thinking about getting a spare tyre and doing a swap on one rim. That way I get to use the spare wheel and the 6th tyre.

I get on pretty well with my local tyre shop....I'm sure they won't mind. :)

X2 for us on our D4 and our previous D2, although the last couple have been at 10,000ks, as we have done a lot of Ks in the last 11mths.

Has worked well for the last 5 years.

I'm getting 60,000K out of a set of General Grabbers on my D3 and I find that as long as wheel alignment is set up correctly there is not enough difference in wear patterns between front and rear to justify rotating tyres.

I'll start by saying it should be no comparision...bad service is bad service...but.....

My wife's Merc went in for it's first service last week. The clowns didn't even inspect the wheels and tyres....checking wheel alignment, balance and condition of wheels and tyres is pretty much a fundemantal.....isn't it?

Oh, they were supposed to, they just didn't. The egg on the side-wall of one tyre and the scrubbing on the other would normally be noticed don't you think?
Yes my wife likes potholes.....:wasntme: She hit one a few days before but being a low profile tyre, if you are on top of it, you can't see the egg. I noticed it and then the penny dropped as the MB service had been in-between. Then I noticed the scrubbing on the tyre too. The car has only done 13K.

I took them to task and got a very wishy, washy defensive response.....

A good arse kicking later and things are better....but WTF?

Apart from the fact that they didn't actually look at the wheels, they recon they only check wheel alignment if there are obvious signs of wear or the customer reports otherwise......I'm sure I get a shiny photo of my D4 with an alignment and brake check recorded as standard, every time it gets serviced.

Am I missing something?
