Fixed - and am happy - thought I'd post just in case someone else hits the same issue.
TD5 Defender 2003 model - Post 02 update
Symptoms - Indicators stopped working, and Hazards stopped. Everything else works.
Checked
- Verified ALL fuses in the fise box on the bulkhead under the dash, I've heard that there are few interrelated fuses, so checked them all.
- Checked the fuses in the black fuse box under the driver's seat.
- checked for wiring shorts, under the bonnet the wiring loom near the brake master cylinder used to rub on the bonnet and cause shorts in the indicator
None of these were an issue. And since it affected both the hazards and Left and Right indicator, fault had to be in the supply run to the indicator switch, so either the hazard light switch or the flasher can.
The Flasher can is behind the instrument cluster - ridiculously easy to remove the cluster - 4 screws and it's out. Hazard light switch is in the center console, which looks like a PITA to get out, have to remove the top crash pad to get to the three remaining screws holding it in. (Although I now reckon you can just pull the switch out without removing the facia.)
So decided to start with the easy check - Pulled the Flasher can and opened it up.
It was very obvious that there was a dry solder joint where the connector for the loom solders into the circuit board. Looks like it's been there like that for the last 10 years, but only just failed. Anyway - 10 minute job to clean it up and re solder it - and as good as new.
