Hi Guys
Just bought a 13k old D4 sdv6 which came with an original LR snorkel. I do want a snorkel but the LR one is not water rated (described as a clean air option) so I'm thinking of changing it for a Safari snorkel.
One thing bothers me .. at the moment, the D4 is averaging 10.8l/100km on the Hume Highway. This is 1L/100km more than the supposed City consumption. Is this the snorkel?? Any other suggestions??

how hard is it to return to OEM non-snorkel set up? If not to hard or $$$ I would do that and get a base figure to go from...

As I understand it, the LR snorkel is purely bolted onto the outside of the vehicle. All the piping in the guard is "standard". Ie Its not at all hard to remove the snorkel .. just won't have the pretty little grill for a while.
Still surprised at how inefficent the engine is being.
Driving to Sydney (500k) on Wednesday so will get another reading without snorkel on.

I would be interested if a few D4 SD6 owners could post their fuel averages.

I have now removed the snorkel (5 min job) and seem to be averaging about 9 l/100km.
Ie 1.7 better than with the snorkel on. Will keep checking for a while.

Craig, if the figure of 13,000klms is correct then I would say the engine is not yet run in, I would work it hard at least up to 20k, no lazy cruising at constant revs on long trips. Fuel economy should improve when the motor is bedded in, regards Frank.

You may be right. Unfortunately, most of my driving is Hume Highway .. s'pose I could always run it in 3rd gear @ 110.
Still, I have taken the snorkel off and saw an immediate improvement. I drove to Sydney (450km) pulling an empty box trailer and got 10.3 l/100km.

I have heard that snorkels of various makes actually increase fuel consumption:confused:

S'pose there are 2 factors ... they're not exactly the most aerodynamic of things, but I suspect more importantly, that some configurations may actually limit airflow into the engine. The genuine LR snorkel has the air intake facing backwards -- doesn't seem like a good idea to me. Intend to replace it with a Safari (forward-facing) snorkel.

Now that I've done such a great review ... anybody want to buy a slightly used LR snorkel !!
