View Full Version : Watching for my D4 to come off the Asian Emperor in Fremantle

Ive been on the webcam this morning. There is one pointing directly at the car ramp. Nothing much has come off. No white D4s but it makes for pretty exciting television:angel:

Anyone else got one on this boat?

I'd want mine to stay on the ship in this weather - think of all that sea spray being blown onto it!

I wouldn't mind waiting for a D4 to turn up though - starting to think about off loading the D2 and looking at D3's longingly....

How often do the LR's come in? Is it for Aus wide or just Wa?

Due to take delivery of a white d4 HSE mid - late nov. That's the best timeframe they can give me......

JamesH

It takes two weeks to clear and prep. My date is 20 November so it's a pretty good chance the sole white HSE I saw on the dock is yours. [update, Ive just seen youre in Vic so no it wouldn't be yours which is still on board presumably]

I had to take a picture of three white SEs with what appeared to be black interior.

Oh and next stop for Asian Emperor is Melbourne.

I just bought a 2nd hand D3, I love it, but I still look back longingly at the D2. It was so capable, albeit not as "smooth" as the D3.
SWMBO would not go back, I would.

Interesting jspyle, my wife would prefer a more car like driving experience and I'd just like something quieter! I like the way the D2 goes but it's gearbox frustrates me somewhat....

I love the sound system, I'm an old head banger, of the D3. I cannot speak of a D4. I believe it is an improvement but I don't have the wallet.
I think the D2 was amazing off road, I could take it there and it would bring me back.
The D3 does it quietly (?) and easily, no fuss, I'm not all that adventurous, I do like to take Swmbo though and the D > 2 meets with approval.

Every 2-3 months.
There are stops in Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane.
Vehicles are then transported via truck to other places.

If you ordered a vehicle (UK build) & you live in Sydney, then it will be dropped off in Sydney.
If you order a vehicle & it is in the country, you may find the choice you pick may be in storage at Prix-Car WA & need to be trucked to Sydney.

There's been tow loads of Landies dropped off in Freo in the last two weeks and the Tolsberg is due in on the 20th and it started from Southhampton.

It has been to Auckland, Brisbane and Port Kembla and must be on its way to Melbourne. I thought it had mine on it but i was mistaken. I would not be surprised if it did have Landies aboard.

If you ask your saleman he/she will be able to tell you what ship it's on.

PMSL, it's all smoke and mirrors from my saleswomen. That or she is completely incompetent. Cannot even tell me what week in Nov let alone a date. It's like trying to get an answer out of a politician. Non direct, non specific response, and she knows I am now without a car until he new one arrives.

Seriously no wonder the good car sales people make a killing, it's not hard against some of the sales people I have come across. Just lucky they have a good brand to sell....would not last two seconds in corporate sales.........

Thanks Chuck, no from ULR, same group but very evident the difference between MLR and ULR, so far the experience has been chalk and cheese. Really wanted to buy from MLR through Andrew but even he said to grab the deal that was offered by the sales manager at ULR. Andrew and Pete at mlr for that matter have been great at any request, or question and it's the same consistent feedback on both dealerships from everyone I speak to, ULR negative, MLR positive.

I know where I will be going for my servicing though.....;)

Bought D2a at ULR , serviced at MLR with the odd stop at ULR. Bought the D4 at MLR, serviced at MLR. Totally agree, like two different companies...would not even bother walking into ULR again....could not get the time of day from them, clearly a SE 3.0 D4 is not prestige enough for them to chat with us even though we were a previous customer.....

Good luck with your new toy, we love the D4 , terrific to drive.

Same here,i have bought four new over the years off the dealer here.As for the D4,MLR had the spec i wanted, helpful all the time, and at a price the local place could not get near.Well worth the drive.:)

Oh,and they tossed in a few things i did not even ask for, genuine mats, tow pack, etc.

I had a dream that I too would find the D4 I wanted at a dealer far away in the East and do the ultimate road trip back to Perth but I found the one I wanted on sale east of Perth, but only 20 minutes east.

Mind you, after reading the running in thread I'm probably better off not having the first 5000 km done at 110kmh.

You can download an app called "marine traffic" and track the ship "live", if you know the name of the ship that is:D

JamesH
9th November 2012, 08:57 AM
Hi Keith. I'll post you a photo of what might be your car, later when I upload from my camera.

I don't know why you can't get some more information, both Perth dealers are part of the same company. On the day I signed up I was told "late November" and when the fellow AULROian, LR09WA who bought a D4 in the same sale told me his was on the wharf I rang up to find out if mine was too. I was given the bad news but the salesman kindly looked up my order and told me the VIN of the car, the name of he ship, docking date and the delivery date.

They take 14 days from landing to clear customs and do pre-delivery prep. I'm going to call them next week to see if by some lucky chance it will be ready a few days early for next weekend. They told me they would at least be able to give me all the numbers and licence plates so I can pre-arrange insurance.

So you have a white/ebony SE coming too? What features? Mine has everything I wanted except rear E-diff. It's got Hi-line sound, reversing camera, bi-xenon headlights so . It also has third row air-conditioning which I have zero use for. If you want rear air-conditioning and can offer me E-diff perhaps we can swap.

JayBee75
9th November 2012, 01:06 PM
Pushed hard and finally got some information out of my dealer.

Car is due to arrive on the 17th Nov, then a week for pre delivery so the 23rd/24th is potentially my pick up date.

Timing sort of co incides with the shipping destination out from WA, clearance the delivery to the dealer, so maybe it was on that ship in Perth?

My SE does not have a rear diff lock either:( a feature I was ideally wanting on mine also. From reading the forum, you can't retrofit them so that's a bit of a downer, but the savings on the run-out 2012 models was too good to pass on, so will have to make do...as I wanted the White with Black leather, limited choice.

Have been away for work, got back to the office today and have a message from LR:)...still to touch base, but my guess is my car has landed.

Cheers, Keith

James that would surely make sense that my car is on it then? Today is the 9th, sat/sun tomorrow then by the time it's offloaded, sits around, cleared, trucked out with other vehicles then delivered to the dealer end of next week aligns with the dates. Then 1 week delivery ( hopefully quicker) in two weeks I should have my D4. Then straight off to prestige for a sunroof...

Okay, so now I'm upset. Where's my message?

Could it be that yours came off the boat with Mick's late in October two weeks ago and is ready now? I saw three white D4s on the dock that day too. I had hoped one was mine but they said it wasn't. They were due to finish prepping those today. I'd be in there tomorrow morning at opening time with a big bag of money if I was you.

Order the GOE handbook on getting the most out of the offroad tools on modern Landies. It's a useful book. Ive read Gordon's posts on E-Diffs and he says unless youre doing serious rock crawling etc the standard setup is still really good and an E-Diff won't be missed.

Interesting. I'm wondering if the D4 that we're waiting on is also on this boat... Have been getting the runaround about delivery date too. Latest we've heard is that we should take delivery mid Nov, and then when pressed some more, the story moved to 21st Nov. This was after being originally told that the car was arriving in "about a week" at the time of purchase.... That was on the 27th of September. I get the impression that people aren't being upfront. It is possible that the dealer doesn't have any extra information, but if that's the case, it looks as thought their system needs to be fixed. OK. Enough ranting!

Whilst on the topic of new D4's, I'd be interested to hear from you all as to whether you think the deal we received is on par with what you'd expect.

We bought an D4SE 2012, Black on Black, Tech Pack and Rear Air. 85K.

Would have loved one with the edif, but none were specced that way with the other things we wanted and the prices for the 2012 seemed too good to miss.

I'd love to know your thoughts.

Cheers!

Yeah. Driveaway. Got to the point where dealers wouldn't beat it, even when looking interstate. So figured I was about on the money, but it's always hard to tell whether you can hold out for a little lower.

Spoke to my dealer....all was sounding good until we got to the part where after confirming mine was the white with black interior he said the only extra on mine was the xenon headlights:eek:And was due to land 30 november:mad:Explained i had the stereo and reverse camera and was told mid November. My issue could be i have purcased through OP but delivery is at Southern LR. Said he needed to speak to his boss and would get back to me. Concerned now that the vehicle with spec i ordered is not arriving and a wrong spec one is. Will keep you posted.

Off to a GOE seminar this Monday, so will touch base with Gordon then.

Cambo that all sounds strange to me but as this is the first and possibly last (though I hope not) new car Ive ever purchased I can't claim to be an expert on how the game is played. The options are included in the contract so I'm not expecting any grief on that point, perhaps I'm naive. I hope we haven't bought the same car! Were you signing a contract at OP while I was signing one at Southerns?

**
"This is Troy, I can't come to the phone now but please leave a message and I'll get back to you as soon as I can"
"Son, it's your father. Ive just sold that last white D4 you had on your list, ebony interior with reversing camera and hi-line sound, talk later, bye"

Camera pans to James and salesman sitting down in the corner of the room...
**

Did I ever mention that I am a paranoiac pessimist?

Where there are humans, there will be mistakes. If it all goes pear shaped, Cambo gets the car I signed up for, and I end having to accept a black Rangie Sport because that's the only new car on the lot with Hi-Line sound and reversing camera, then having a tanty about it is not going to do anyone any good.

After we had settled on the deal for mine in February this year, and paid the deposit, they rang a week or so later & said something like.

'we have a bit of a mix up,we have discovered your vehicle has rear air.Somehow it was left off the options list by LR during delivery into the country' I said nothing.'we have decided to give it to you at no charge'

I couldn't believe my ears:eek:

OK i said that is good of you.It is an option we didn't really want as the kids have left home, the back seats will be very rarely used. They also threw in the tow pack & genuine mats.:)

Good to know James. Thanks mate. Also has the rear aircon...

Unfortunately no xenons or edif though. I suppose that's them's the breaks when it comes to these things as the runout offer seemed too good to refuse.

This will be our first four wheel drive (and so therefore also our first land rover). We had looked at the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the VW Touareg as well, but the drive of the D4 seemed streets ahead to me. The Jeep was incredibly well kitted out for the money but didn't have the quality feel and smooth drive of the D4. The Touareg was excellent to drive on the road, but reviews were saying it wasn't as capable off it. The T'reg lost out on space too. Plus the third row of seats may come in handy now and then in the D4.

I just hope the thing is in and ready to go soon. The waiting is killing me!

That sounds like a great deal James. Out of interest when did you place your order? I originally wanted an SE but was told there were no more available (may have been an options thing ) so they ended up offering a great price on a couple if different HSE's but there were only a few of those left in the color option I wanted.

Ended up paying a few grand more than what you paid on a white HSE with tint, mats and corperate servicing. Against the prices I am seeing them go for a the moment I believe a got a very good deal, and am subsequently very happy.

Cheers

Have been wondering the same thing....have we bought the same car? What makes me think not is that your car has rear AC and the one I signed up for doesn't. I initially got quoted on at Southern LR (afl grand final weekend) and at that juncture they said they had only one available white with black interior SE and it had the Hi Ice Stereo and Reverse Camera...the next weekend I had the wife and kids out at OP and we did a test drive...signed up for the car there...when they came back they said there was only one car available in my specs and it had the Hi Ice Stereo and Reverse Camera ( assumed the same vehicle). Whilst this is all listed on the sales contract, it does say on mine "subject to BLR acquiring the vehicle" so they could have that as a way out if there has been a mix up. Will be on the phone to them Monday, will let you know how it goes....my guess if there has been some kind of mix up, they're going to want to do what they can to make sure they get both sales...i could be persuaded to go a different colour on the outside in return for a rear diff, no extra charge on their part of course:p

Yeah, I think the rear aircon is telling. You signed up before I did so you got the one I would have bought if it was still on the menu. I will very rarely use the third row seats and when I do I would have been perfectly happy for the occupants to do without their own aircon if it meant money in my pocket.

Hmm... I can't seem to get anywhere with the dealer.

Just to recap:
The original timeframe was loosely described by the salesman and he indicated by the end of the following week. Had purchased on the 27th of Sept.

I have been persistent (but polite) ever since, just wanting to get a confirmed date. In the mean time, the original sales person has resigned. The new sales person who has taken over our sale and delivery has not been able to help and indicated mid Nov... which is right now. When pressed, she then said by the 21st of Nov. Given that this would be in a week, you would think that the dealer should be able to get a solid indication as to when they will take delivery and then be able to let us know when we could pick it up from them.

Phoned today. Our sales person is not in today. Put through to manager. He said he would check it out and get right back to me. That was hours ago. Rang back. Firstly asked to hold as he was on a call. Then after holding, told he was with another customer and could he ring back. I asked if there was anyone else I could speak to, receptionist said he was the best person for delivery date information as they were short staffed.

Frustrated is an understatement!

I had the same question in my mind JayBee75. Then, out of the blue, the manager phones this afternoon (finally). Plenty of excuses as to why it was so late. But in good news, he says that the car I've ordered has finally arrived in their holding yard today and that it just needs to get delivered to their workshop for their once over and then to the dealership for delivery to us. When I asked for an estimated day, he said before next weekend. After getting off the phone, I realise he could either mean this coming weekend or the following one after that. So, it seems it's still ambiguous and whilst it does feel like it's closer than it was, I wish someone could just name the date and be clear. I suspect you are correct about the dealer that I am dealing with.

Hi Jaybe

If it helps you here is how the sales people explained the process (in WA) to me if it's of any help to you.

Ship docks and customs and quarantine ask for up to ten working days to process the cars. As they are cleared by the agents they are released to the agent and the dealer gets told what cars are coming on the next truck(s). The agent will deliver the cars to the dealer quite quickly when they are released but ask for up to two days to get them to the dealer. Once the dealer has them they can take two days to get them ready to hand over to the purchaser. The company policy is to prioritise sold cars they get their hands on so they can get them to the purchaser asap. So it can take 14 working days from the ship landing to handing over to client.

My dealer knew the ship and the docking date well before the ship docked and added the number of days and reckoned I'd have my car this Tuesday. I'd hoped for earlier but they did say they'd tell me when they got it and they haven't told me so I might be waiting a bit longer.

Had the GM of the OP dealership on the case this past few days. He has been absolutely brilliant. In short, I am getting a white HSE, ebony interior that landed at the dealer yesterday at a very good price. He was apologetic for what I had gone through and really came through with the goods. Absolutely stoked:). Should be picking it up next week from the dealer.

It is worth the wait. I have had my white D4 SE V6 for a few weeks now -brilliant drive with the 3ltr and much better than my 2007 RRS TDV6 which really surprised me. Enjoy the new smell while it lasts.:)
Cheers
Michael

Friday lunchtime i got the call that my car would be ready at 3pm. The trouble is I was walking out the door to the office Christmas Party.. The office team gave me permission to wag the party and pick up the car as long as I came back and gave them all a lift home! Nice try team.

Anyway I was at Southerns at 8am and was on the road out of there by 9. Spent Saturday morning showing my elderly parents and taking them for a drive to my sister's. They gave the access mode the tick of approval. My Dad is 97 and climbing into the Defender was a bit of a trial for him:)

After doing the suburban tour I took it down to a mates farm, we drove down some fire breaks and through some paddocks to play with the modes. So by sundown it was covered in black dust and some cow poo. Sunday it was washed and I headed back to Perth.

400km:D:D

I'm so pleased, I loved my Defender but this car just eats the miles in total comfort, music playing. It is silent except for a bit of wind noise. Amazing. When I got back towards Perth and the traffic on the free built up, I was fine with it. Slowed down, let people in, kicked back and relaxed.

I'm going to do a lot of miles in this car.
