Yeah

I spotted that too. I recognised her Xtech from her forum pic. Great letter.

Congratulations to her and hope she enjoys the lights.

That Overlander is not a bad read, certainly best of the 'off road' magazines. They recently did a side by side test of a Puma90 and Tojo
FJ Cruiser. I thought it fair and balanced - something you wouldn't get from one of your run-of-the-mill ' 4WD Lad's mags'. It concluded if you need to go off road get the 90, and if you're a metrosexual urbanista who wants to look 'edgy' enroute to the next latte -go Tojo.

Of course, they didn't write it quite like that.... :wasntme:

But that John Cadogan fella is the biz - the thinking man (and woman's) Roothy.

Cheers

Having met both men I can assure you "Roothy" is also a highly intelligent man.

His persona to suit the demographic of the magazine he is writing for shows a depth of understanding.

Both John & John :) are great guys...

Thank you! I've yet to see the story in the mag though as my newsagent only has last months mags in stock at the moment (I've been checking daily) but a friend sent me a pic of the story (he is a subscriber so got the mag early)..

I was stoked to win the lights as I am in the process of kitting out my car for a trip to the Canning Stock route next year.. and as we all know it is an expensive business and lights were way down the list of must haves as I couldn't see me affording them before the trip.. I can't wait to get them! :)

going on reports you might just get them before your trip next year. :D

And having met neither - I now stand corrected! :whistling:

I meant no disrepect to Roothy but simply observe -as you do- that they pitch to different sorts of audiences

I have met Roothy once in public setting, at the Perth 4wd show. Intelligent is right. The Roothy persona is only one facet of John Roth. They say still waters run deep, except Roothy is not very still.
Sue, congratulations. It’s good to see you recognized for all your work and effort. Enjoy the adulation.

So this Overlander magazine you speak of. Is it international travels or just UK based. Perhaps I have answered my question, congratulations Sue.
I did have LR international once but it's very heavy on advertising, is Overlander similar.

Not wanting to hi-jack, but...
Having done the CSR last year, so long as you have good tyres, a good compressor and the best dampers you can afford you won't need anything else.

Assuming you already have a fridge, twin battery setup and proper GPS.

It's an easy drive, just long.

it is australian based and the ones I have seen don't have any overland (as in international) trips.

oh dear, I don't get into news agencies very much as you can see.
Run by EMG hey, I guess all the stories are now going to be knock offs or cut and paste jobs from there other 4x4action variations like camper trailers, camping leisure and so on.

is EMG the Coles or Woolies of the 4x4 magazine world?

Sorry I've just seen this.. :)

Yup have most of that and are in the process of adding what I don't have.. It's not just the Canning I am doing I'm also planning on taking a detour on the way home via the Gunbarrel Hwy and the Simpson.. so I feel that I should add some accessories to the car to make it easier/safer like bull bar, winch, roof racks, fuel tank etc.. I don't have a proper GPS (unless a Navman counts lol) but do have loads of maps (although no map reading skills at all lol).. but I am following a group for a lot of the way so if I get lost then I am blaming them.. :p

He changes again when he writes for "Live to Ride" magazine. He goes into 'John West' mode; laid back, cool biker dude.

Hi Sue, Congratulations on the 90 and the write up. :D

You don't have to go too overboard with the accessories, Yorkshire Jon summed it up pretty good.

The bull bars pretty handy for peace of mind and makes a good seat to boot. :) A winch is not really neccessary for what you're doing, looks good in the bull bar but is really just more ballast than anything else. A good snatch strap is a good idea though.

Weight is a pretty important factor though, condider an aluminium bull bar for this reason. You've got 1900 Km and at least 3 weeks to carry gear for on the CSR so every little bit helps. When we set up Kayes D2a we got an alloy ECB bar which has been great, especially the weight factor in front of the front wheels when bouncing over dunes.
With the 90 you probably can't get away without a roofrack which is a shame but that's how it goes. I'd consider 10 litre plastic jerry cans, heaps cheaper than an external tank and a lot more reliable/versatile.
GPS's are a fine toy/tool but not really essential for what you're doing. On the Canning and the Simpson there's the road you've been on and the one in front of you, pretty hard to get lost. ;) A good set of Hemma Maps and the excellent strip maps from www.outbacktravellers.com.au (http://www.outbacktravellers.com.au) are all you need along with an accurate odometer and basic map reading skills.

I must be getting old, I can still remember the first edition of Overlander with the LR Game on its front cover, must have been in the early '70's. :o

is EMG the Coles or Woolies of the 4x4 magazine world?

Yep.

Haven't read Overlander since their 4wd of Year Award. From memory theDefender was unsuitable for touring on dirt roads at 100km / hr and lacked offroad ability. Payload and fuel efficiency were not considered important fortouring.

4wd Action did a recent article on the best 4wd ever. What they said aboutthe Defender was fair and correct.

Both mags are owned by EMG, but I now only buy 4wd Action.

Talk about Roothy?
I recently watched a cd from 4WD action magazine and they were heading out of Port Macquarie to some fire trails. On the way they came across some mud holes which had a diversion around it as it was in open country, however what do you think Roothy and the others did?
Yep, you guessed it, went straight on in and buried the trucks and had to be winched out. Completely destroyed the track for the sake of?
If you haven't got the point yet, it is because of these egotistical feral idiots with very small appendages that I'm kept out of my favourite spots and I'm sick of them. They are the usual suspects, however if they were young, you would hope they would grow out of it, but age is no barrier to imbecilic behaviour.
Sorry a little off subject, but relevant to the crux of the issue, which is, mine is bigger than yours!

It's nothing special (article wise).. just the readers ride section of Decembers Overlander Mag.. A friend took a pic of the page for me as he subscribes and I was having problems finding the actual mag (eventually found it though)..
