Hi All,

I am currently working on tidying-up my seat-box.

The previous owner cut out a section of the underside of the passenger seat box lid (to fit the petrol cap for the second petrol tank, which I have since removed).

Here is a picture of the removed section (underside):

I know that it isn't exactly structural, but by cutting out this section of the seat box - the previous owner has also broken through and damaged the top of the seat box.

My initial though was - I will just replace the entire seat box lid. To that end I aquired a Series 3 (I think) seat box lid from another forum member. I thought that the seat-boxes from a 2/2a/3 are all the same...

Unless my seat-box is non-standard (always a possibility) there are differences: Left is my S2 lid, right is a S3 (I guess) lid:

The main differences that I can see are:
* The S3 lid is longer (and would need to be cut down to match the S2)
* The S2 lid seems to have better bracing
* The S2 latch is bigger/longer (effecting how it connects to the seat box).
* The S2 lid has 2 hinges at the rear, the S3 doesn't.

I suppose there are 3 options:
1) Cut down the S3 lid, transfer the front latch & rear hinges over from my existing lid.
2) Try and repair my existing S2 lid.
3) Try and source an original S2 lid.

Am I correct in saying that a S2 lid - is different to a S2a & S3 lid?

Another forum member took some photo's of his S2a lid - and it is the same as the S3 lid.

As always - any opinions are greatly appreciated.

Hi Grey Ghost,
Your veh being a 1960 still had alot of parts that were a hangover from the series 1 vehicles, the lids changed not long after the introduction of the 2A, Australia still hung onto some things for longer than the UK.
Also the later type im sure was more cost cutting on Land Rovers part.
Best bet I suppose is try to find another unmolested one or weld a repair section in.
I have one you could have but think postage from Nth QLD would be a killer :(

All the best with the repairs

As Northern Lander said. The change is not a Series 2/3 difference, but changed some time in 2a production. (The same applies to many supposed differences between 2, 2a and 3 - most changes did not happen at the same time as the change in Series!

My 69 2a has the same lid as your S3 design on both the passenger tool box and over the gearbox access. The one over the fuel tank is a bolted flat plate.

My 1965 IIA has a seatbox lid under the passenger seat which is the same as your Series III example. Under the driver's seat, there's a flat plate which screws down at either end.

My 63 has the series 3 style for the left seat and the hinged style for the centre seat. I can't recall if the bracing on the centre hatch is the same as in your photo though.

If you check out http://greenacre.biz/lrsale/lrsale.htm, you might find Item 14 is what you're looking for.

If you let me know the dimensions of the panel you're after, then you can have it for postage cost if no-one else has jumped in earlier.
