Hi all, I did a search but couldn't find anything relevant. I have found a nice defender for sale that I intend to purchase next weekend if its all good. Here is the link to the ad ...Land Rover Defender 110 TD5 Extreme (4x4) (2002) 4D Wagon 5 SP Manual (2.5L -... | eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=251177484999#ht_500wt_922)

What should I look for? I know the basics but I'm oblivious to computer controlled engines. Also does this have the sals diff on it? What do you think I should pay for it?

Any help and advice very much appreciated. :)

Build date of June 2002 would be on the cusp mate.

Early 2002 still had the sals.

Has a re-map, so assuming NNN prefix ECU. (flashable).

A few out there, on the change over when they still had the sals but the updated NNN ECU.

Ask for a photo.

Thanks for your reply, I know nothing of re-maps, how do I know it's actually got one? What's the cusp? Thanks in advance

Ask for a name, who/where was it done. Paperwork.

If possible, take it for a drive, or find someone that's knows TD5's to.

Get a Nanocom or similar to read what engine map it's running.

Cusp, I meant when LR went from Sals to P38/Rover diff.

Others will have more specific knowledge.

Plenty of info on TD5's and what to look for around here.
Start in the "good oil"

Best of luck.

I bought a 2002 Extreme a couple of years back these are the things I have had to fix.

They have plastic head dowels unless the head has been removed its just a matter of time before you should do it.

Replaced the oil cooler, head and radiator due to previous owner having wrong coolant in it.

Rear axles and flanges needed replacing

1 front ABS Sensor was faulty

The positives with the 2002 in my view are Salisbury rear diff, Front vents unlike later models, EU3 Engine with its NNN ECU, ABS and Traction control once its been sorted

I have that on my ebay watch list too. Looks like a good buy, but don't worry I won't be bidding... Just scoping for a future purchase. ;)

Something I learned the other day:

Steel one piece rear door

horizontal radio mounting panel with switches in dash

Around 2005, they also got one piece steel front doors, instead of the dreadful steel frame / aluminium skinned things. This is spottable from the inside of the frame in the top corners. Old ones are welded. new ones are curved.

i think the rear side doors were changed to one piece steel aswell with the 2007 model year.

What makes it an "Extreme" over a standard version or were they all extremes ?

Normally they have the stickers on the side but not this one ?

Is there anyway of telling whether it has plastic head dowels? What coolant should be in it?

Check the service history and see if it has had the head off.
From the factory it would of had plastic dowells not really an issue but eventually the head will move.
I was told when I bought mine that the head should be done 160-180000 ks.
That said Whyatt's have a TD5 that had over 320000 ks on the clock on the original head with plastic dowells so they are not always trouble.
Because I live in an isolated location I don't take chances so I had the job done
When the head was pulled we found that it had been damaged by the wrong coolant, to be honest I was hoping that it was damaged so I could put the uprated Turner head on it.
The head was starting to move so I did the right thing.

It needs OAT coolant in it, OAT is usually pink but there are green OAT coolants out there.
If the coolant is nice and clean and pink it is likely to be OK if its old dirty green coolant I would be careful.

Once sorted I think they are an excellent vehicle just beware of paying for the previous owners poor maintenance practices.

extreme has abs traction control power windows etc.

They also sold base wagons but I think that was only early in the td5 life.

Thanks for all your input. I have spoken to the owner and the head has not been done. It is a 15p engine. Was it the 10p that had the plastic dowels and the 15p was the steel dowel one?

No that would be thinking logically it doesnt work that way
This car from factory had plastic dowells Its the same build as mine.
Some 2004-5 models had plastic dowells

Did you win Jonno?

Nope. But I already said to him that if it didn't sell at auction I'd be interested in coming to have a look and offer some cash.
