View Full Version : D4 getting accessories to stay on?

Have looked through the forum & tried to find this out from the dealer, but have not succeeded.
Is there any way to get the accessories to stay on?When a door is opened they do come on,but time out & shut off again.
The manual says push the start button without foot on brake pedal. This does start the accessories, but also the ignition,so the dash lights up.
Not really what i want,i just want the accessory sockets in the centre console on & be able to charge a mobile from the port in the centre console.
Having the ignition on for a while will not do the battery any favours.

All accessory sockets except the driver's side one can be powered permanently by replacing a relay in the passenger fusebox with a link wire fitted with male spade terminals on each end.

The question then beckons, which relay, which pins?

Or by permanently wiring them to a second battery.

I don't have a D4 wiring diagram but the 2010 RRS has the "cigar" socket powered by another relay so the D4 is likely the same. I haven't bothered looking as I've removed the driver's side socket.

I have the second battery wired to two power sockets in the rear, one is a hella plug, the other a standard cigarette socket which is great. But there are times where i need to charge a phone for example, from the USB port in the centre console.

I'm interested in this thread as I want to run my versa-lite and Engel at campsites. It hadnt occured to me that there was no "accessory" mode.
It looks like I'll have to see somebody about installing a Traxide and permanent power to the back as suggested here sooner rather than later.
Scary I know it sounds obvious and you probably thought of it before but if you already have permanent power then maybe a USB/12 volt plug might do the trick?

yes 12 volt charger or USB/12v is the way,not having an accessory mode is a PITA,though,at times.
Small price to pay for a well sorted vehicle, that i love to drive:)
The traxide dual battery system is very easy to fit, just watch the battery does not rub on the plastic coolant tank.I use it for the engle as well as a hand held spot light when shooting, also camping lights etc, etc, great bit of kit.
I also use the power for a small inverter to charge up the lap top, camera battery, ipod dock, etc.
I try to keep all the load off the starter battery as low charged & low voltage on the starter battery seems to cause all sorts of issues with these vehicles, something you don't want in the bush.

Hello All,
I am also interested in how to keep the Radio Operating in Accessory Mode but for a different reason.
The kids have tickets for the Drive In Theatre and the sound is via the Radio (FM). I have found that after a period of time the Accessory Mode shuts down and turns the Radio OFF. This will not be desirable at the Drive In during the Movie.
I have a D4 MY11 SDV6 SE with the Standard Audio System.
Is there a way to keep the Radio ON?
Are you able to turn OFF the Dash Instrument Lights when the Accessory Mode is ON?

You won't be happy with the answer, NO (alway happy to stand corrected).
Apart from accessory mode turning off after a few minutes the radio will also shut off after a period of time, I think the default seting is 10 minutes. You can find it in the "Hidden Menu" but cannot be changed (maybe with Faultmate).
Next issue is the system will also turn off due to "Low Battery" message even though the battery isn't really that low, more of a starting fail safe.
Options?
Full tank of fuel and hope the vehicle is pointing into a light breeze and idle away for 2+ hours (and who's going to do that)
Remember that portable radio in the garage well dust it off and fit some fresh batteries.

The low end vehicle.
To turn the radio on. Just press the power button on the radio...
When it turns off - press again!

When you say dash instrument lights - are you talking about back lighting or all the warning lights on - if the latter then the ignition is on.

Hello All,
Well I tried your suggestion of pressing the Power Button for the Radio when everything was OFF and the Radio turned ON. The Ignition is OFF and Dash Back Light OFF.
How simple was that.
Garry, I was talking about the Dash Back Light and Symbols. These are not turning ON when only the Radio Power Button is pressed.
I shall test how long the Radio Stays ON for in this Mode so I know what to expect.
Thanks all for your help.

Well that seems to be pain in the butt! My new MY13 is a work vehicle. I use the phone a lot. Sitting having a business conversation via Bluetooth & then having it shut down after a short while is a bloody nuisance. Same with using the rear accessory power for running low voltage equipment (fire simulator) - shuts down after a short while and I have to go through the set up sequence again. I like the way it does a lot of things but not how it regards me as being a complete idiot and takes over. I have a wife for that.

Bypassing the timer for the accessory sockets is a relatively easy fix. Replace the relays R1 & R3 with some fused jumpers. There is a recent thread on this.

Mate, I appreciate the reply but my skills are severely lacking in that area and I can assure you I would end up doing the investigation into why the damn thing caught fire. I spotted the thread & photos and noted, yep, wiring, square looking thingys, spade connectors. I was a good firey, still am a reasonable fire origin & cause investigator but dealing with electrickity is not one of my skills. I suspect that I will just have to get used to short phone conversations ;)
I have only had it a week so am still figuring out the bits & pieces.

I am sure if you ask nicely, someone may help you with this problem, beer or wine or Whiskey fixes a lot of things:cool:

Baz, I am sure that would be the case and I could/will get they guy who is fitting the brake controller & Anderson plug to do it. It is more that, whilst I love all the intelligent systems in the pram, I sometimes get the feeling that it is looking down upon me as a mere mortal. It seems to be saying " I am a Black Pack on black Land Rover and I am beautiful. I have an intelligence level far above you or your capabilities, therefore I will decide what you can or cannot leave on/operate/play with. Do not mess with me!" :(:(

Lift the lid on your centre console cubby / box Baz.
There should be two USB ports there (in the underside of the lid - one for iPod and another for any USB device. I often have a passenger who plugs his phone into this one to re-charge it (my phone sits in a cradle on the dash that I've hard-wired into the vehicle).
When travelling, I've usually got an iPod sitting in the cubby box permanently plugged into the iPod USB port - gives me full control of the iPod through the LR stereo system (better than the control of my iPhone through bluetooth connection).

I have the same on the MY13. I understand on the MY14 these connectors were moved to the top glove box, which IMHO is a much better place.
A thumb drive in the usb port is fine, but am sick of the iPod cable(s) that seem to find their way in when I am relieved of driving duties by SWMBO. They get jammed in the lid.

I bought a 10cm iOS 7 compatible Lightning cable off eBay, and it has been working fine. Doesn't get caught as much shorter, but does restrict phone position.
