Continental ContiCross Contact AT. What are they like?

Hi Guys,

Just took a deposit on my Hilux this morning so I am ready to leave a deposit on a new Defender.

One of the first mods I had in mind was the tyres, but the whole reason im buying the Defender is it requires less mods than other 4x4s. Save $$$$

I have for about 20 years run BFG's Muddies and AT's and swear by them. Though due to a shortage last year I put Coopers on the Hilux STT's. Bit noisy but do the job on the sharp rocks.

Anyways, what are your experiences with the standard Continental Crosscontact AT???? Their website gives stuff all on their construction, I like the 3 ply sidewalls on the BFG & Coopers and am curious if the Conti has the same.

I toyed with the bigger diameter but am going to leave standard size. is it worth getting the BFG or running the Conti's and saving my dosh to spend elsewhere on the Defender?.

The type of 4WDing i'll be doing is low range rocky steep hill climbs, not real big articulation stuff but bush rock, quartz, and sharpies. So I need a good performing tyre.

An AT is fine and I let my pressures down to 18-20 psi I just want to be confident the sidewalls are strong enough.

I took another Hilux recently with me and he staked his sidewall (forgot to look what brand) and in my 20 years running the BFG never had a sidewall issue.

Are these Conti's a tough enough tyre?

Offroading is at least once a month 2-3 days and the majority is on road driving and will be towing a 2.8 Tonne trailer.

i would say leave as standard, we never changed the tyres on our car and have never felt that it was lacking, we use it more for touring but it gets the occasional work out.

Had this issue myself. European tyre Mfrs don't use the "LT" designation. The local tyre retailers couldn't/wouldn't resolve the issue; ie is the Continental AT a "LT" tyre rather than a "P". All would say "oh yeah these are the same as LTs" but no one could demonstrate that this in fact was the case.

I do recall that at a later date I did find the Euro equivalent marking for a LT but it now escapes me.

Perhaps someone here has an answer.

LR offer the MT as an option. I have got these and have had no problems so far. I have done over 280000 km in my pootrol with BFG AT without a puncture and that is what I will be fitting next. I intend to get my money's worth out of the original tyres though.

good question, I just ordered my defender with the same tyres , as that's what they come with. In all honestly I've never heard of them.The 4wd drive I have now is fitted with maxis bighorns great tyre in the scrub, but bloody noisy on the road..

I've got a 2010 puma that came out with the continentals. Mine have been fine. I've done a trip around aus in them and have done all sorts of terrain. The only time they let me down was wet clay/mud where I expected that anyway.
Ours have mainly done touring but plenty of offroad and rough jagged rocks and no sidewall issues. I did punch a big hole right through the centre of the tread about the size of a twenty cent piece on the Gibb river road on one tyre but this was my own fault for getting lazy with not setting at the right pressure and wrong speed.

I've got about 65,000 on mine now and probly still about 30-40% tread left.

Thanks guys for the feedback, I am still unclear as to wether they have 3 ply sidewall, although everyone seems to get good milage out of them.

I think I will be putting BFG KM2 or AT on. I figure ill try and sell the Conti's while they are new, no point running them for a few thousand klm to find out im not happy especially if they last so long , that will be a long wait for the tyres I prefer. I'm guessing the Conti's will be easier to sell new.

Ok, I checked the tyre today.

They are a 2 ply sidewall and a 6 ply tread.

Im selling them, I pick up the new Defender Friday so they are off immediately.

Forgot to put the for sale add for them in last night will do it now.
