View Full Version : Puma transfer leak up high

My 2007 Puma has developed an oil leak which appears to be coming from fairly high up, and emerges on the forward side of the main transfer housing & runs down the transfer bottom plate. At this stage I can't see where it comes from & wondering if any others have had a similar leak & can suggest a possible source?

It could possibly be from the intermediate shaft by the sound of it.
Trouble with that is it can be damage to the casing as opposed to the seal itself causing it.
Is it coming from the face towards the back of the gearbox?

Thanks
The oil does appear on that face at least, so it may be from there. I've given it a hit with the Karcher, but it needs a bit more yet I think. It's clocked up 200,000km now, so it's probably had enough time to wear the housing (hope it's something less expensive though).

Hi mate
I recently had a similar issue with mine (only 70000km). Originally though was coming from high but discovered one of the casing bolts connecting transfer case to gear box came loose. Not sure, but this bolt apparently goes through the cavity of one or both boxes and allows the oil to leak. I suppose you've checked all the bolts and torqued?
Hope this may help

I gave it a good clean yesterday, and looked again this morning when I got to work. No sign of any oil leaking yet. It might need a longer & hotter run.
From what I can see, I don't think I have a problem with case wear around the intermediate shaft. I couldn't generate any slight movement levering it at different angles with no transmission load, so I'm relieved to (hopefully) eliminate that possibility.
I'll certainly check those bolts too, Firsttimedefender. Thanks for advising your experience. The assembly fellas seem to skimp on loctite with the Defender!

Had similar problem with D2 xfer case, was the high low selector spigot "o" ring. A case of live with it till the box comes out.
